Rory Gallagher, one of the world's greatest blues rock musicians to ever live, was born in Ballyshannon, in County Donegal, Ireland on March 2, 1948. He and his family eventually moved to Cork, Ireland, where he was raised and lived. Today we celebrate his birthday, though we also grieve for his life being cut far too short.
The Irish songwriter, guitarist and music legend had a highly successful solo career, after also having been a member of the band Taste in the late 1960s. Gallagher was well respected by the elite musicians of his time, and remains an influence to those who knew of him when he was alive and those who have discovered his music since.
Unfortunately, we lost Rory on June 14, 1995, after complications from a liver transplant caused his death at the age of 47. So far, over 30 million copies of his albums have sold worldwide.
In remembrance of the great Rory Gallagher, since we've can only be near him through his music, I offer "A Million Miles Away" (1973) as our 'Today's Tune'.
