Junior's Eyes goes back to the middle of March 2012 through a sampling of Washington Capitals game reviews, highlights videos and more.

Washington was in the middle of rebounding a bit in the Eastern Conference standings, at the start of this segment. Unfortunately, they faltered somewhat, with more of the 'Jekyll and Hyde' play effort inconsistency that they've been known for throughout this NHL hockey season.

In reverse chronological order, here is the review list.

Powerless
By Mike Vogel at Dump 'N Chase

...Heading into tonight’s NHL action, the Caps’ total of 221 power play opportunities this season ranks 27th in the NHL. Only Colorado (204), Dallas (215) and the New York Islanders (220) have had fewer power plays.

The Caps have been shorthanded 247 times themselves this season. Eleven teams have been shorthanded more than Washington has thus far...

Mathieu Perreault Shows That Crashing The Net
Isn't Just For Big Guys

By Rob Parker at Japers' Rink

...Unlike their bigger-bodied brethren who get the job done with brute force, the smaller players that go to these high-traffic areas need to use guile and timing to find loose pucks in high-percentage scoring spots. After the jump, we'll take a look at how one Washington Capital - one of the smaller players in the League - has been scoring dirty goals by crashing the net...

POSTGAME NOTEBOOK: Blackhawks 5, Capitals 2?
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Faulty First – By the time the Capitals recorded their first shot on goal in Sunday’s game against the Blackhawks in Chicago, their hosts already owned a 2-0 lead. The Hawks thoroughly outplayed the Caps in the game’s first 20 minutes, and while Washington has authored some thrilling comebacks of late, they haven’t done so against teams of Chicago’s caliber...

The plot thickens
By Joe Beninati (Capitals TV Play-By-Play) at CSN - Washington, DC

This will not come as a surprise to any of you, but this is going to be one crazy race in the Southeast Division and in the Eastern Conference. The Caps visited MTS Centre in Winnipeg Friday riding the confidence of a four-game win streak. Despite a gutsy effort, they would not leave victorious. When the final seconds ticked off the clock, the rabid fans in this long-forsaken, hockey-mad city sunk their teeth into a 3-2 win for the Jets which moved them to within two points of Washington on the Eastern Conference ladder...

Pep rally

POSTGAME NOTEBOOK: Capitals 5, Islanders 4, SO
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Two The Hard Way – The Washington Capitals came out flat for the first 20-plus minutes of the first game of an important five-game road trip on Tuesday night against the New York Islanders. The Caps took minor penalties in the first minute and the last minute of the first frame, surrendering a power play goal against on the second one. Of the first two goals scored in the game by the Isles, neither was put into the net with a hockey stick, and neither touched an Islander last before entering the net...

Super Weekend For Ovechkin And The Capitals

Alex Ovechkin celebrates 3rd period goal vs Red Wings with Jeff Schultz.
January 31, 2009 Photo by Nick Wass / Associated Press

This past weekend went very well for Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. The Caps are flying high. Maybe not not as high as Michael Phelps, but in a better way, after winning both Saturday's and Sunday's games.

On Saturday, Washington hosted the Detroit Red Wings for a 12:30 PM game and handed last year's Stanley Cup Champions their fifth straight loss. Alex Ovechkin scored two third period goals in the span of 1:16, the second while on a power play. Ovechkin now leads the NHL with 18 third period goals and is tied for second place with 7 game winners. Viktor Kozlov also scored in the first period, and defenseman Mike Green got his 14th of the season in the second, giving the Capitals a 4-2 victory. Washington showed no signs of letting up in the final two minutes of the game, even after being called for three straight penalties and facing a 6 on 3 Detroit power play for part of that time. Jose Theodore stopped 27 of the Red Wings 29 shots on goal, making his record in goal 18-9-2. Tom Poti skated for 20:38 and blocked five shots in a much welcomed return. He had missed 15 games due to a groin problem.

After Saturday's win versus the Red Wings, the Caps kept their foot on the gas and mowed down the Ottawa Senators by a score of 7-4 on Sunday in another 12:30 PM game. Brent Johnson made 34 saves in net, giving him a 12-6-2 record, with a 2.81 GAA and .908 Sv% in 21 games this season. Johnny is now 9-0-1 at home. Mike Green started the Capitals scoring in the first period, getting his 15th goal of the season while on the power play, just three seconds off the draw. He also had three assists on the day and leads the league's defenseman in scoring. Less than a minute after Green's goal, the Capitals got another quick PPG, when Ovechkin buried one just four seconds of the draw. Ovechkin would go on to score two more goals (35 and 36) in the second period for a hat trick. Ovie now has seven career hat tricks. Also scoring in the second, Eric Fehr got his 4th goal and Alexander Semin his 19th of the season. Nicklas Backstrom capped off the win with a 155+ ft shot on an empty net from the slot in front of Washington's goal, giving him his 13th.

A review of this past weekend is a pleasure for Washington Capitals fans. The Capitals (68 points) moved back ahead of the New Jersey Devils (67 points) in the standings with the four point weekend. Guess who the Caps face next? Yeah, they head to Jersey, where they'll try to hang on to second place in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday night.

Don't Cry, Hockey Doesn't End This Week

Right! The NHL's 2008 Stanley Cup Final will become final when the Detroit Red Wings are awarded the world of sports' most coveted championship trophy either tonight or after a Game 7 on Saturday. That's absolutely true. Sorry Pittsburgh Penguins fans. OK, so I'm not really sorry. My point is that there is so much more to come.

There's the NHL Awards Show in Toronto on June 12, 2008. New season ticket holders for the 2008-2009 season can enjoy the show while picking out their Verizon Center seats at the Washington Capitals Open House that same evening. Of course, Alex Ovechkin is expected to receive another award or two. After already claiming the Maurice "Rocket" Richard and Art Ross Trophies for leading the league with 65 goals and 112 points, he's up for a couple MVP awards as well. We will find out if he got the votes he deserved for the Lester B. Pearson Award and the Hart Memorial Trophy on the 12th. Keep in mind that Nicklas Backstrom may take the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year, and Bruce Boudreau should get the Jack Adams Award for coaching the team from the cellar to the playoffs.

The 2008 NHL Entry Draft will be held in Ottawa June 20 - 21. According to the NHL, 107 of the best draft eligible players arrived in Toronto last week for the Draft Combine. What do you think the Capitals will be looking for this year? General Manager George McPhee has done very well at the past few Drafts. Will he be as successful this time? It's a very exciting time for serious hockey fans.

On July 1st, hockey continues with the Unrestricted Free Agents hitting the open market. Although it's a more expensive route in acquiring veteran players, McPhee has also fared pretty well with this avenue. However, trades are where you usually get better value for your money. It'll be interesting to see who Washington is able to resign, who we might lose, and who George decides to bring to the team.

Another thing to look forward to is the Capitals Development Camp. Many of the young prospects will attend July 7th - 12th. Coaches and management get a better idea of what they have in the pipeline during this camp.

There really isn't that much down time. Sure, there will be a few weeks in the second half of the summer where things really slow down until training camp starts. But, there's plenty going on for a while yet.

Capitals Vs Red Wings 12/17/2007 Review

.
.
.
I offer the following random thoughts, as I didn't have time for a full review.
.
.
1: I felt like I was watching a Playoff game.
.
2: I wish the Washington Capitals had signed Pavel Datsyuk instead of Viktor Kozlov.
.
3: Alexander Ovechkin is on pace for 58 goals and 94 points for the season.
.
4: The Capitals out shot the Detroit Red Wings through regulation.
.
5: Nicklas Backstrom is freakin' awesome.
.
6: The roughing penalty on Donald Brashear in the second period was pretty lame.
.
7: All three stars going to Red Wings players was just as lame.
.
.
*Extra: The Red Wings won the Skills Competition, which was held immediately after the game.
