Flyers Vs Capitals February 1, 2013
Game Review

Philadelphia Flyers 2 Vs Washington Capitals 3 = Home Game Win!

The Washington Capitals played in their fifth straight 3 - 2 game on February 1, 2013, when they faced the Philadelphia Flyers at home. For only the second time out of those five games, and in fact all eight games of the season, the Capitals won. Both of their wins were games played at home.

Braden Holtby finally got another turn at goaltending for the Caps, after not having brought his best efforts in the first two games of the season. This time he played himself into better fortune. His mates also brought improved fore and backcheckjng, along with good hustle. Meanwhile, the Flyers were all quite sluggish, with their defense being particularly sloppy.

The first period was typically filled with penalties, not a good start for either team. And neither team was able to take advantage of their powerplays. Both went a man down for the game, when Philadelphia's center Zac Rinaldo picked a fight with Washington's forward Matt Hendricks before the puck was dropped on a faceoff. That's an automatic game misconduct and ejection from the game. The altercation came as a result of defenseman John Erskine getting an elbow up into Philly's forward Wayne Simmonds (RW). The on-ice officials didn't deem that intentional, but he may face some extra off-ice time, after the league reviews what took place.

There were plenty more PPs in the second period, but nobody was able to take advantage. Even-strength scoring chances weren't successful either, until after the mid-game point. Bruno Gervais (D) put the Flyers on the scoreboard first, at 11:43. The Capitals would answer back six minutes later on one of Philadelphia's many mistakes. On an offensive zone dump-in, the puck landed on the stick of Caps defenseman John Carlson, who flipped it to center Nicklas Backstrom (C). Backstrom was able to skate in and score on a top-shelf backhand shot unopposed, because half the Flyers were busy screwing up a line change.

Seconds after being crunched along the boards, Troy Brouwer (RW) put Washington ahead, four minutes into the third period. Backstrom started the play from the left wing faceoff circle, then defenseman Mike Green passed the puck back to Brouwer at the same spot. Troy zipped the puck over the shoulder of Ilya Bryzgalov, short side and just under the crossbar. Less than three minutes later, Wojtek Wolski (LW) put Washington ahead by two, on a breakaway created after defenseman Luke Schenn bobbled the puck from a neutral zone faceoff. The Caps held onto a one goal lead after center Brayden Schenn scored halfway through the third period.

Even though Washington lost an important part of their attack in Hendricks late in the first period, they played very well. Philadelphia wasn't at their best, which helped the the Caps a little, but it was still an enjoyable game to watch. It's always good when your team wins, anyway. The Capitals will need a few more, really quickly, if they are to contend for the playoffs this -2012--2013 NHL Hockey season.

Washington Capitals Summer Review:
June Through August Of 2012

Photo via ULoop blog.

Summer, both the temperate season (Northern Hemisphere) and the NHL hockey offseason, are coming to a close (hopefully) in a couple weeks. There may not have been as much activity during the last three months as many fans would have liked, but a few events and newsworthy stories did take place.

In June, after the playoffs, we had the 2012 Entry Draft. July 1, free agency started. Intermittently, there have been trades and various transactions throughout the summer.

Washington Capitals fans said goodbye to a few newly minted free agents, including veteran crease invader Mike Knuble, and enigmatic winger Alexander Semin. We also said hello to new acquisitions, like the consistent forward Mike Ribeiro.

For those Caps fans who work and live locally, I'm sure watching the prospects play at development camp was exciting. Currently, we're all tracking the new CBA negotiations.

More detailed information, and related feature stories, are available via the archives of the following popular sites.

Today's Tune: "Dirty Love" By Frank Zappa

May 3, 2011 photo by Chris O'Meara / AP Photo

Washington Capitals' veteran hockey forward Mike Knuble deserves his own theme music. He's one of the few guys on the team that is consistently willing to crash the net and try to jam in any loose pucks. Scoring with this style of play is known as a "dirty goal". Tonight, he got another one of these, when he shoved one through versus the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Capitals still lost the game, their third straight loss in the second round of the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Having gone 0 and 3 so far in the Semi-Final best of seven series, maybe the Caps need more players to consistently go to the net.

Since Knuble does it on such a regular basis that he is known for it, I think his theme song should be the Frank Zappa classic, "Dirty Love" (1973). So, that's also my pick for this 'Today's Tune'.

Halak steals Game 6 from Caps
By Tarik El-Bashir at Capitals Insider

...*Jaroslak Halak was great tonight. No way around that. The guy made 54 saves. But Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green are four of the best sharpshooters in the world, and it's not like Halak didn't leave a rebound loitering about on a few occasions.

Halak did make a number of scintillating saves. But the one he was credited with on Tomas Fleischmann midway through the third period was not one of them...

Postgame Notebook: Canadiens 4, Capitals 1
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Case of the Mondays – For the second time in as many games, the Montreal Canadiens scored two goals in the game’s first 10 minutes. And for the second time in as many games, the goaltending of Jaroslav Halak was enough to make those two tallies stand up for a Montreal win.

Halak stopped 53 of the 54 shots poured in his direction in Monday’s Game 6, enabling the Canadiens to forge a 4-1 win and to force a deciding seventh game in the District on Wednesday...

Remarkable Halak
By Joe Beninati - Washington Capitals Play-by-Play
at Comcast SportsNet - Washington, DC

Sometimes all you can do is shake your head and wonder how in the world one player performs at such a remarkable level. Jaroslav Halak was the overwhelming reason why Montreal earned 4-1 decision over Washington tonight.

He made a ridiculously good stop on Alex Semin in the first minute of the game and never looked back. As soon as he made two more stellar stops, shortly there after I was worried that he may be unbeatable tonight. But his effort managed to exceed my wildest imagination. That was one of the best goaltending performances I have seen in many moons...

Unsung Heroes
By Becca H at Japers' Rink

There's been plenty of talk in this series about the usual suspects that have stepped up their game and the usual suspects who haven't (paging Messrs Green, Semin and Fleischmann). It dominates pre- and post-game chatter, with analysts and various media types choosing to focus on the "big" names over the course of a series unless prompted to do otherwise.

Lost in all of that talk sometimes, however, are the role-players - guys who almost always become increasingly important in the playoffs. While blogs and more specialist sites can and do devote time to these workhorses, their efforts can often go unheralded. And yet when everyone else's superstars are finding that next level to the game, often it's these lesser-known players who become the difference-makers over the course of a series...

Caps practice power play
By Tarik El-Bashir at Capitals Insider

The Caps spent most of this morning's practice working on -- what else? -- the power play, which is a dismal 1 for 24 through five games in this series. The almost all-out 30-minute session appeared to be a little more intensive than usual, with Coach Bruce Boudreau often interrupting the unit to instruct.

"The other day he was more irritated, and today he was a little more calm," Mike Knuble said of Boudreau, the power play's architect. Capitals Vs Flyers 04/17/2008 EC Quarterfinal Game 4 Review

Photo - Mike Stobe / Getty Images

Capitals 3 - Flyers 4 2OT

Unlike the previous two playoff games, the Washington Capitals definitely played well enough to win this double overtime thriller versus the Philadelphia Flyers. They showed no fear as they heavily forechecked, backchecked and aggressively drove to the net.

It only took 42 seconds for Philadelphia to get on the scoreboard. Jeff Carter backhanded a shot past Cristobal Huet. Huet was cleaned out by Scottie Upshaw after the puck got by him, no penalty called as usual. At the other end a few seconds later, Alexander Semin took exception to being high sticked by Scott Hartnell. Everybody gathered in the corner and exchanged pleasantries. As is his typical wussey way, Danny Briere quickly got himself out of harms way and circled around looking for a defenseless victim. Briere figured the least scary opponent would be Washington's rookie center Nicklas Backstrom, so he sucker punched him in the back of the head before putting him in a headlock. Both Semin and Briere got two minutes in the penalty box for roughing. Briere also got called for holding. As Briere was escorted to the box, he was allowed to go over to bark at Backstrom some more. After another incident, where Alex Ovechkin's visor was mysteriously broken off his helmet, the Capitals answered back with the power play goal. Backstom got a perfect pass from Ovechkin and snapped the puck past Martin Biron for his first NHL playoff goal.

Photo - Tom Mihalek / AP

The next tally was also a Capitals' PP goal. This time Backstrom sent the beautiful cross ice pass through the crease to Semin, who banged in his first NHL playoff goal at 12:59. It was the first time since the end of the third period in Game 1 that Washington had been in the lead. After a lot more rough stuff, bitchin', whinnin', complainin' and missed penalty calls, Carter snapped in his second goal of the game.

Just under six minutes into the second period, a loose puck ended up in front of Steve Eminger. Emmy sent in the short side wrister for his first NHL playoff goal. The helpers on this one went to Semin and Brooks Laich. Laich was also instrumental in the other two Capitals' goals, as he was the one clearing the crease to the open shooting lanes. After a lot of exciting play by Washington and both goaltenders, as well as plenty of dirty misbehaving by the Flyers (See Semin's lacerated nose...At least Jim Dowd didn't completely remove his head), the period came to an end.

Photo - Mike Stobe / Getty Images

The Cap's started the third period ahead 3-2, with 1:24 of PP time on the clock. Unfortunately, after a few good scoring chances by Alex Ovechkin and the boys along with a couple amazing saves by Huet, the little pest Briere evened the score 3-3 at 10:01. With Matt Cooke taking a couple punches to the face, and John Erskine clearing the creases like the Flyers were mere bowling pins, Washington held the game to a tie through the end of regulation.

Washington had a few more scoring chances during the two overtime periods that were so close it had to have anyone watching on the edge of their seats yelling "Oooohh!" Just over six minutes into the second OT, Philadelphia's Mike Knuble parked himself by the Washington net. After a couple whacks, he pried Huet's skate from the post and banged in the heart breaking game winner on the next try.

Washington played so well and so hard, they really did deserve a win. However, the Flyers took their third straight. There are a lot of reasons to remain hopeful. Don't forget, they did win eight straight games before losing the second playoff game. Now, they need to take three straight. The percentages may be against them, but the determination that had disappeared for the last couple games has returned with a "vengeance", to use Philadelphia's favorite new big word.

Capitals Vs Flyers 04/15/2008 EC Quarterfinal Game 3 Review

Capitals 3 - Flyers 6

The Washington Capitals didn't play much better in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Playoffs than in Game 2. They continued to be overpowered by the Philadelphia Flyers. Turnovers, bad penalties and a lack of leadership were to blame once again.

It only took 20 seconds for the Flyers to get a scoring chance, but it wasn't until late in the first period before they were able to get the first goal. The Capitals were intermittently more aggressive than in the last game, defensively and offensively. Around the middle of the first, Alexander Semin sent a snapshot in from the left faceoff circle that hit Flyers' goalie Martin Biron in the face mask so hard it took him down. After a couple minutes, he was alright and play resumed. With a 3 on 2 drive, it was Danny Briere that got Philadelphia on the scoreboard at 16:10. The Capitals answered back just over a minute later. Donald Brashear sent a perfect pass from behind the Flyers' net to Eric Fehr. Fehr made a beautiful shot that gave him his first NHL career playoff goal. It didn't take long to wipe the smiles from Caps' fans faces. Briere pushed Washington defenseman Tom Poti away from the front of the Capitals' net, while Scott Hartnell sent a long range slapper into the goal. Washington never suspected the role reversal played out by Hartnell and Briere. Just 17 seconds later, Sami Kapanen took advantage of a bad pass by Milan Jurcina and put the Flyers up by two.

In the penalty laden second period, Washington temporarily got back within one. Mike Green got his third goal of the playoffs on a well screened shot at 7:28, while on the power play. But, the Flyers weren't through roughing feathers. At 14:27, Briere went to the penalty box for roughing, after he tackled Caps' netminder Cristobal Huet. A man advantage at this point would've given Washington a scoring opportunity. But, Huet very stupidly pushed down Briere in retaliation while the referee with his arm up for Briere's infraction was standing right there watching. To me, that's your idiotic pivotal play of the game. If you're going to get revenge, your timing has to be a lot better than that. Of course, no call on Briere for giving Huet a whack on the back of the head as he skated to the box. With Poti in the box for hooking late in the period, Briere scored again with 9.8 seconds left on the clock. Danny now has four points in the playoffs.

The third period went much like the second. Plenty of penalties for both sides. Green got into a little altercation with Philadelphia's Scottie Upshaw 17 seconds in. I guess that was supposed to fire up the troops. It failed to deliver much motivation for the Cap's. However, when Brooks Laich was credited with tipping in a shot from Shaone Morrisonn at 15:26, the guys seemed to get a little more lively. Well, just in time huh? Not really. Just over three minutes left in the game, Morrisonn sends an outlet pass to Green. Mike Richards picked off the puck and drove to the Cap's net. Green tripped him before he got a shot off to prevent a goal being scored. The ref decided that this warranted a penalty shot, which richards promptly sent in via the five hole. With 1:45 left in the game, coach Bruce Boudreau called for a time out. Why? It was far too late to decide that he could inspire them into turning this game around. Afterwards, Washington did cycle the puck in the offensive zone for a bit before the puck bounced over Sergei Fedorov's stick and of the zone. Mike Knuble sent the puck into the empty net, and all that was left to do was wait for the final horn.

It was another embarrassing game in which the Capitals did few things right. They had not learned any lessons yet. They have to play their game. They can't let the Flyers intimidate them. If they focus on what they should be doing and close some of those passing and shooting lanes once and a while, they might accomplish something before it's too late.

Capitals Vs Flyers 02/06/2008 Review

.
.
The Washington Capitals are now in first place in the Southeast Division of the NHL! They got there by beating the Philadelphia Flyers. Thanks Philly. It wasn't easy though. Some of the stats make it look like the Capitals dominated the game. But, the final score tells the scary truth. This was also the game that Philadelphia chose to officially induct former goalie Ron Hextall into the Flyers Hall Of Fame. I'm not sure why they waited so long.
.
For a few seconds within the first minute of the game, Washington's Tom Poti didn't look like the dominating defensive force he had been the night before. He got a bit of a surprise when he skated over to check Flyers' Jeff Carter as he was collecting the puck at the end wall behind the net. Carter saw him coming and nocked him on his ass. Poti would not be so casual in the remainder of the game. Once again, we had a game where it became obvious early on that it would be played in rough and tumble mode. Donald Brashear spent a fair amount of his playing time gently (?) reminding the Fly Boys that he would be around if any punishment was to be handed out. The Cap's killed a bogus Brashear high sticking penalty, while Philadelphia only managed one shot. This happened a couple times in the first period, and the fans booed in disapproval, as the Flys are usually one of the best power play teams in the league this season.
.
Early in the second period, we had a little 4 on 4 play. Philadelphia's Jim Vandermeer gave Alexander Ovechkin a shove after the Cap's were whistled offside. Alex took exception to this, and shoved back. Both players got two minutes to cool down. Then, Mike Green passed the puck to Brooks Laich from the blue line as he headed up the ice. Laich went straight to the net and backhanded the puck past Flyers' goalie Martin Biron. The Capitals lead the league in 4 on 4 goals with 10. Somehow, Biron's stick was broken, and he spent a few minutes playing with just the bottom half. He didn't have any problem stopping shots while waiting for a stop in play. Meanwhile, Washington's netminder Olie Kolzig was only facing half as many shots. But, he had to make some difficult saves from time to time. One such save involved him diving back toward the net to cover up the puck, after a shot went wide of the right side of the net, bounced off the end wall, and ended up on the doorstep at the other side. Then, the Caps' Quintin Laing was called for interference when he was shoved into Biron. Shortly after, Mike Knuble got the PP goal. The period ended tied at 1-1.
.
Things got a little crazy in the third. Let's just say it's a good thing some Cap's players, in addition to Ovechkin, started to remember how to score during the previous game. About two minutes in, Matt Bradley deflected a Mike Green shot into the net, putting Washington back in the lead. About a minute later, Poti was able to keep the puck from leaving the offensive zone. The Flyers' defenders were caught out of position, while Poti got the puck to Tomas Fleischmann, who passed it to Viktor Kozlov. Kozzy easily scored his 11th goal of the season. It seemed like a good sign, because the Cap's always win when Viktor scores a goal. The booing returned at this point. At 7:45, Ovechkin scored his 46th goal of the season. This put Washington ahead 4-1. The Fly's fans were now too stunned to even boo anymore. It looked like it was time for Philadelphia to raise the white flag and surrender, right? But,.............Yeah, you know you don't want a "but" at this point. Here it comes anyway. But then, the Flyers got motivated. The next Flyers' "goal" was waived off during play, and officially denied after video review. It was rightfully decided that Scott Hartnell pushed Olie into the net after he had the puck stopped, therefore before the puck went in. The Flyers then got goals from Sami Kapanen and later Randy Jones, with Biron off the ice for the extra skater. But,.........And this is a good "but". But, the Capitals were able to keep Philadelphia from evening it up.
.
The first team the Cap's faced with Bruce Boudreau as head coach was the Philadelphia Flyers. Washington was at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, even with an OT win that day - November 23, 2007. After beating that same team last night, the Capitals are now in sole possession of first place in the Southeast Division. What a wild ride. No time to relax, though. There's more work to do, yet.

Flyers Vs Capitals 01/13/2008 Review

Flyers 6 - Capitals 4
.
The Washington Capitals faced the Philadelphia Flyers in a 1:00 PM game this afternoon with a healthier roster. Their Captain, Chris Clark returned after missing 18 games with a groin injury. Tom Poti and Brent Johnson also were among the players returning from injury. But, even with healthy players coming back, the Capitals still couldn't manage to come out ahead of the Flyers in this game.
.
Washington's Alexander Semin scored just 1:22 into the game. Captain Clark knocked the puck loose from a Philadelphia defender, and Michael Nylander passed it over to Semin, who sent it in with a five hole wrister past Flyers' netminder Martin Biron. The Caps led by one, but it would be the only time they would have a lead in this game. Less than a minute later Washington's Nicklas Backstrom was called for tripping, only his sixth minor penalty of the season. At 3:08 Philadelphia's Scottie Upshall got nicked for a two handed slash over the back of Semin. Neither team was able to score during this part of the first period. But, at 8:45 Mike Knuble evened things up when he tipped in a rebound that got behind Capitals starting goaltender Olie Kolzig. Later on, with 4:31 left in the first period, Knuble got his second goal on a sharp angle shot during a Power Play compliments of a Michael Nylander holding penalty. The Flyers led 2-1, and would hold the lead for the rest of the game.
.
During the first intermission, Comcast SportsNet showed some highlight clips of the first period as usual. Then, they showed an early first period clip of Caps' Chris Clark as he apparently reaggravated the groin injury he had just returned from. He did play a few more minutes in the second, but he left the game early in the third period. No sense in pushing it. Hopefully, he can fully recover before the next game.
.
Just over three minutes into the second period, Washington's Matt Bradley and Philadelphia's Jason Smith got into a fight over Bradley's hit on Sami Kapanen. They both got 5 minute fighting majors. Smith also got 2:00 for instigating and then 10:00 for game misconduct, as he somehow felt the need to argue his losing case with the referee. A couple minutes later, the Flyer's Jim Dowd tipped in his team's third goal, putting the Flyers ahead by two. Just 59 seconds later, Philadelphia's R. J. Umberger scored with a slapshot that deflected in off of the Capitals' Milan Jurcina. At this point, Washington's Brent Johnson replaced a very upset Olie Kolzig in net.
.
The change seemed to motivate the Capitals. Less than 30 seconds later, Mike Green's slapshot went past Biron to bring the Caps back within two. The credit for scoring the goal may eventually be changed, as the puck seemed to deflect off of at least one other Cap. At 11:50, Washington's "124 Million Dollar Man", Alexander Ovechkin scored his 33rd goal of the season via slapshot. There was a good bit of rough stuff going on with about seven minutes left in the period. Washington's John Erskine and Donald Brashear were in the Capitals' penalty box, while Philadelphia's Riley Cote and Jim Dowd kept each other company in the other box. The period ended Flyers 4 - Caps 3.
.
Both goalies got a bit of a workout in the third, as play continued to be very brisk. The refs seemed to be tired of blowing their whistles. Quite a few things went uncalled. But then, that's pretty typical of this season, so far. At 8:23, Mike Richards' backhander got past Johnson for his 20th of the season. Ultimately, that would be enough for the Flyers to win. On the bright side, Michael Nylander got his 200th career goal later in the period. But, with Johnson off the ice for the extra Washington skater and just 37 seconds left, Kimmo Timonen got an unassisted empty netter.
.
Before they left the ice, Ovechkin and Richards had what looked like a few heated words. But, as Craig Laughlin suggested, those words were probably something like..."I'll see you at the All Star game. Yeah, ...right. I'm sure that was it. Not the way we Caps' fans wanted this game to end. But, without some brilliant saves by Brent Johnson in relief, it could have been even worse.
