Kimi Räikkönen spits out some of Rally Mexico's slippery gravel.
Rally Mexico, the second of the 2010 WRC rallies, got into the actual racing stages in León, México last Friday March 12th, after Thursday's Shakedown.
Mikko Hirvonen, driving his Ford Focus RS, was reved up after his win in Sweden and trying to make it two in a row to start the 2010 season. It was Petter Solberg, who had the fastest time in the pre-rally shakedown with his Citroën C4, that started Day 1 off looking like the man to beat. Hirvonen lost his car's rear bumper during stage one, not a good way to start the day, huh?
Citroën Junior Team driver Kimi Räikkönen continued to have all sorts of problems, much like in his WRC debut in Sweden last month. Solberg stayed out in front through SS7, but after rolling his C4, Räikkönen was out of the day's action just before the end of the stage.
At the end of Day 1, it was 2003 World Rally Champion and 2005 Rally Mexico winner Petter Solberg still in the lead. Kimi's teammate Sébastien Ogier had an excellent day, and came in second place. Sébastien Loeb, defending WRC Champion and winner of the last three rallies in Mexico, came in third and must have been at least slightly worried about his chances to be the overall winner.
