2013 F1 Australian Grand Prix Review

Formula One racing is back, as the 2013 Formula One season got started this past Sunday - March 17, 2013, with the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. The Albert Park area's Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, in Melbourne, Australia, was the venue for the season opener, which brought a few surprises to F1 racing experts.

Surprising to probably everyone, was the lack of safety-car involvement in an incident free grand prix. It just doesn't happen very much. If there aren't even any minor crashes, there's usually at least one mechanical failure somewhere on the track, often in a fairly precarious location.

The biggest surprise, at least for the supposed experts, was who came out on top in the end. They couldn't seem to believe who won the race, even though he had been a GP champion, not really all that long ago. Then again, maybe it was the former champ's team organization that was the real surprise. Their name hasn't been anywhere near the top of the class for several years, though they did start to get some attention last season, with this driver's return to Formula One.

The top three finishers on the day, were: 2007 season World Champion Kimi Räikkönen (Finland), driving a Lotus-Renault, won the race; Fernando Alonso (Spain), another former champion, brought his Scuderia Ferrari in second; Third best, was the top guy of the past couple years, Red Bull-Renault driver Sebastian Vettel (Germany).

Who would have thought that a guy who had 69 previous career podium finishes, and who had already won 19 races over the course of his career, could've managed it? Who would possibly imagine former champion Kimi Räikkönen could manage to win one lousy season opening race? Well, me for one. I mean, why not? It's just one freaking race, anyway. Taking time off from Formula One to try a little WRC rally driving, didn't ruin you. Go Lotus! Go Kimi Räikkönen!

Jenson Button Q&A: A very sweet victory
Posted at Formula1.com on March 18, 2012

Jenson Button was not favourite for the win, but he did it. He put it down to reacting better to the lights at the start - and McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton playing it fair into Turn 1. Whatever it was, it means the 2009 title holder leaves Melbourne with maximum points - and the sweet taste of having started the season by leaving five other F1 champions eating his dust...

Australia analysis - the perfect start to 2012
Posted at Formula1.com on March 19, 2012

To fans' delight, pre-season predictions of even closer racing proved correct in Melbourne, with an epic Australian Grand Prix, won in style by Jenson Button. There was little between the race pace of McLaren and Red Bull; it took all Fernando Alonso's skills to haul Ferrari into contention; and the midfield action was frenetic, with just 0.1s the difference between eighth and 11th place as the chequered flag fell...

2012 F1 Australian Grand Prix Preview

The 2012 Formula One Season gets under way this morning with the 2012 Australian Grand Prix, on the street circuit at Albert Park, in Melbourne. Six Formula One champions are committed to this year's calendar, and all six will be in today's race.

Preparations may not have gone terribly well for Ferrari, and they are not confident about their chances for a podium finish in Australia. Mercedes driver, and seven-times champion Michael Schumacher has also been called cautious, but then isn't everybody before the season starts? Of course, the local favorite driver is Red Bull's Mark Webber.

Here's a batch of links from Formula1.com for you to preview this event. One audio podcast and a couple sample videos are also cued up, below.

Today's Tune: Rod Stewart Sings "Sailing"

Endeavour replica sailing into Cooktown's harbor near the mouth of the Endeavour River. Photo by John Hill.

On August 26, 1768, Captain James Cook left a port in England on board the HMS Endeavour. The explorer and his crew sailed west, around Cape Horn (South America), on to New Zealand and Australia.

Our 'Today's Tune', Gavin Sutherland's "Sailing" (1972), gives the listener a good idea of how James Cook and his crew members must have been feeling by the time they headed toward home, after such an incredibly long time away.

The song title connects with our story for an obvious reason, but the performer does as well. Cook was the son of a Scottish farm laborer, and the featured singer covering the song is Scotland's most popular singer of all time, Rod Stewart.

The second race of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship Season took place at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia this past Sunday - March 28, 2010. The winner of the 2010 Australian Grand Prix was the reigning Formula One World Drivers' Champion, Great Britain's Jenson Button (McLaren - Mercedes).

Experts had once again predicted German Renault driver Sebastian Vettel and "Red Bull the team to beat". But once again Vettel, a dominating driver in portions of both of the first two races, was a victim of car failure.

The following articles posted this week at Formula1.com review this year's Australian Grand Prix. Click on the title links to read the full story on this race. Interviews, details and race analysis are included.

Button wins Melbourne thriller for McLaren
Posted at Formula1.com on March 28, 2010

Jenson Button moved within six points of the world championship lead on Sunday with a superbly judged victory for McLaren in a dramatic Australian Grand Prix that firmly gave the lie to suggestions that Formula One racing is boring.

A rain shower just before the start saw the field start on intermediate Bridgestone tyres, and after a brush between Button, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher, then a heavy crash involving BMW Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi, Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi and Williams’ Nico Hulkenberg in Turn Six, the safety car was deployed...

Q: Jenson, an incredible race. 50 laps plus on a set of soft tyres. You made the early gamble for the slick tyres and that was the game changer. Was that your call?
Jenson Button: It was. I think it is a lot easier for the drivers to feel the conditions. The team can see it on TV with the clouds coming in, but we can feel out on the circuit what is happening. I didn’t have a balance on the inters, I was really struggling and I lost a couple of places, so I thought ‘let’s get in, stick the slicks on.’ There was a dry line...

Sebastian Vettel Q&A: Car failure ‘massively infuriating’
Posted at Formula1.com on March 28, 2010

It would seem Sebastian Vettel is jinxed. As in Bahrain, Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix saw him dominate the race only to be eliminated by a mechanical problem. He may head to Malaysia safe in the knowledge that he has the fastest car on the grid, but he also knows that missing out on valuable points at this stage of the season could ultimately cost him the title...

Jenson Button Q&A: Melbourne’s a good place for me
Posted at Formula1.com on March 29, 2010

In 2009 Jenson Button took his first win of the season in Australia en route to the title. On Sunday he took the first win of his title defence in the same place - surely a good omen. After qualifying fourth, Button had predicted the real strength of the McLaren would be race pace - and he was right. After victory in only his second outing for his new team, can it get any better for the Briton? Button certainly thinks so...

Australia race analysis - McLaren win the bull fight
Posted at Formula1.com on March 29, 2010

As in Bahrain, Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull were the fastest combination in Melbourne. But as in Bahrain, mechanical failure meant the win escaped them. Instead it was Jenson Button and McLaren who did the best job of capitalising on their rivals’ misfortune in some very difficult conditions. A stunning drive from Robert Kubica brought Renault an unexpected podium, and Felipe Massa struck back in his battle with Ferrari team mate Fernando Alonso, beating the Spaniard to third place. We take a team-by-team look at how everyone fared at Albert Park on Sunday...

Robert Kubica Q&A: Australian race ‘pretty much perfect’
Posted at Formula1.com on March 29, 2010

Renault’s second-place finish was arguably the biggest shock of the Australian Grand Prix weekend and much of it was down to the skills of the man behind the wheel, Robert Kubica, who kept his cool as supposedly faster rivals tripped up in the tricky conditions. The Pole reviews his Melbourne race and looks ahead to Malaysia...

Q: Sebastian, what a lap. The final sector of it you were hanging it off the edge of the kerbs, you were all over the place. You certainly spoiled the day for the Webber fans here in Melbourne. Sebastian Vettel: Yeah, I think obviously first of all it is a great result for both of us and for the team. Mark’s home race, so it is a little bit funny remembering last year from Germany, so kind of revenge but it is a long race tomorrow. But coming back to qualifying, I think we did a good step into qualifying with the car, improving it, and the final session was all about ‘does it start to rain or not.’...
