'Doctor Who' Stars Explain Why Romance Isn't 'Necessary'
In The New Series

By Rick Marshall at MTV's Splash Page

So, in case you aren't aware of it by now, I'm a big (okay, huge) fan of "Doctor Who," the BBC series that's one of the longest-running science-fiction programs in television history. As I've been doing every Friday during the new season, I'm rolling out another segment today from my recent interview with the program's stars, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan.

This time around, the new "Doctor Who" duo discusses the hot-button issue of romance between The Doctor and his companion. As I mention in the interview, "Doctor Who" lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has indicated that such romance isn't a recent development in the series, but for the series' stars, it's not a "necessary" development, either...

Tom Poti expected to make full recovery
Posted by By Tarik El-Bashir at Capitals Insider

Tom Poti didn't want to do his final interview of the season on camera.

Given the swath of stitches on the right side of his face, his blood-filled eye, and the black-and-blue bruise surrounding it, his request was totally understandable.

Poti, the Caps' best defensive defenseman, suffered the gruesome injury in the second period of Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens...

Now What?
By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

That’s going to be the question that haunts Caps Nation until this time next year. When a season of such hope and expectation ends so suddenly and emphatically with a loss in the first round of the playoffs to a team that finished 33 points behind you in the standings, that’s a question that betrays a lack of certainty as to just the “what” is supposed to be.

But out of the wreckage of the bomb that was set off in Verizon Center on Wednesday night, there are still sturdy shoots of hope popping out of the rubble. First, let’s get something out of the way at the start. In our last entry we said...

Another Final Four Appearance for Hershey
By The OFB Team at On Frozen Blog

Where would we in Hockey D.C. be without the springtime performance of the Hershey Bears as agony-salve? They did it again last night. Mathieu Perreault scored the equalizer with 1:13 to play in game 4 in Albany, then added the series-winner for good measure at the 2:23 mark of OT. Bears 5, River Rats 4, series over in the minimum four games. The Bears move on to the American League Eastern Conference finals — their fourth appearance in the conference finals in the past five seasons...

Brooks Laich changes a tire after Game 7

Trying to Take a Step Forward... Without Taking Two Steps Back
By David M. Getz at Japers' Rink

The Washington Capitals did some amazing things this season. Fifty-four wins. More than 120 points. Seven twenty goal scorers. The top five players in League plus-minus. Far and away the best offense in the league, one of the NHL's better defensive squads, and a scoring differential of more than a goal a game. And yet the season, by the team's own standard, was a failure.

The obvious question is: Where does the team go from here?...

It is an old cliché in sports – in life, actually – that you never know if the opportunity presented to you now – today – is the only chance you will get to catch the dream you chase.

Tonight, the Capitals' chance for a Stanley Cup passed them by in the form of the Montreal Canadiens, who brought their lunch pails and their hard hats to Verizon Center, while the Caps seemed content with dressing up like a collection of swells. The result was a 2-1 loss that eliminated the Capitals from this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs and set off what promises to be a summer of serious reflection on the matter of whether this team – as currently configured – has the guts, the grit, and the heart of a champion...

Only the Nashville Predators (1,985 career regular season games) and the Boston Bruins (2,012) had fewer games worth of NHL experience than did Washington (2,277).

Iron Man 2: Is The Movie Any Good?

If you’re an avid AC/DC fan expecting to be blown away by hearing the 15 tracks from AC/DC’s fine new chart-topping Iron Man 2 soundtrack album, as former soaks Robert Downey Jr and Mickey Rourke knock six (hells) bells out of each other, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Shoot To Thrill opens the film and Highway To Hell comes in almost apologetically just before then end credits. The other 13 songs are sorely missing, and yet there is plenty of scope for their inclusion. Such as during the unimpressive recreation of the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. And this is something to cherish and celebrate about our sport. Game 7s in hockey are extraordinary events. We don’t particularly like them when they occur as they have with circumstances such as those in this Caps-Habs series, but once the decisive game arrives, it affords an aura unlike anything else in our sport...

Shame On You!

There was a lot of stupid unnecessary drama and shameful actions (and sometimes lack of action) by the opponent, referees and league officials going on during the first round of the 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, while the Washington Capitals were playing against the New York Rangers. Now that the Capitals are up against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, they are facing the same old tricks, complaining and injustices again.

Shame on Sidney Crosby for whining so much. Legitimate complaints would be fine, but crying about everything that doesn't go the way he wants is pathetic.

Shame on Kris Kunitz for the intentional two handed cross check to the throat of Simeon Varlamov in Semifinal Game 2.

Shame on Colin Campbell and the NHL for not suspending Kunitz. Fining him a lousy $2,500.00 isn't going to bother him one bit, and it's out of proportion to the suspensions they gave to Donald Brashear for his actions versus the Rangers.

Shame on the Penguins for their playoff game ticket giveaway screw up. Once tell someone they've won a prize, it's wrong to take it back.

Shame on the Penguins for complaining about something they themselves are guilty of.

Shame on the Penguins for making false accusations about faceoff cheating, illeagle pics and sticks just to wrongfully sway the thoughts of on ice officials.

Shame on the refs for being swayed by all the Penguins B.S.

Shame on the Penguins for complaining about officiating, when it's the Capitals who are the ones that have a right to complain.

Shame on CBC for broadcasting the Capitals coaching staff's game plan board with their keys to victory for Wednesday's Game 3 against the Penguins.

Rangers Vs Capitals 04/24/2009 EC Quarterfinal Game 5 Review

Rangers 0 - Capitals 4

The Washington Capitals extended their first round playoff series to at least a Game 6 by shutting out the New York Rangers 4-0 for the second time in the post season. The Rangers played hard, but the Capitals were at least a little better in every category.

Forward Matt Bradley scored the first goal of the game with the very first shot on goal, while the Caps were killing off their first penalty. It was only the second shorthanded goal in all of the 2009 Quarterfinals so far, and Bradley's first ever NHL level playoff goal. The primary assist came from Boyd Gordon, who cleared the puck from behind the Caps' net, sending it along the boards. Bradley collected the puck just inside the offensive zone, drove straight through the slot and slid it past goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Just 7:09 later and still in the first period, Bradley got his second goal of the game with a severe angle shot from the sidewall, near the goal line.

The other two goals came from Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin during the second period. Ovechkin's goal was another highlight reel spectacle, scored 29 seconds before the end of the period. He grabbed the puck at the Caps' blueline and skated it all the way up ice. After entering the Rangers' end, he plowed through New York forward Chris Drury as he went across the ice, slid the puck between the legs of defenseman Derek Morris and then headed right down the middle. He sent a backhander to the net as he fell to the ice, and Aaron Voros rode piggy back as Ovie slid to the end wall.

There were a lot of penalties called in this very physical game, with 11 of the 19 committed by the Rangers. That's not the best game plan fellas. There were a few more that could have been called, but this game probably was officiated a little bit better than in the previous contests. I would like to know why it always seems like the referees end up holding on to Washingtons' players at the end of fights, while the other guys get a few more punches in. Thankfully, we've got seriously tough guys like John Erskine and Donald Brashear, who can take some sucker punches. Our enforcers can also play hockey pretty well too, unlike New York's thug only Colton Orr.

If you're a Capitals fan, it's a time to be proud of your team. They did just about everything right, including chasing Henrik Lundqvist from between the pipes, by scoring four goals within their first 14 shots on net in the first two periods. He was replaced by Steven Valiquette at the start of the third. Valiqutte didn't give up any goals on the measly seven shots that made it to the net, but New York never got anything past Simeon Varlamov through all 60 minutes, earning him his second shutout of the series. Former Washington goalie Olie Kolzig is the only other Capital to have earned more than one shutout (4 in 1998) during a playoff series. The Caps also blocked 21 shots in this game, while the Rangers only blocked 11.

The Capitals will now head back to New York for Game 6 on Sunday afternoon. They must win that game to get a Game 7 back in Washington, DC. They must win both games to advance to the next round and avoid elimination.

Islanders Vs Capitals 12/04/2008 Review

Donald Brashear celebrates winning goal with David Steckel nearby.

Islanders 2 - Capitals 5

Last night's win versus the New York Islanders was a first for both Washington Capitals' goaltender Brent Johnson and head coach Bruce Boudreau. This game also marked the debut of the AHL's current leading scorer Keith Aucoin as a Capital. Right winger Graham Mink was sent back down to the Hershey Bears, making room for center Aucoin to be called up to the NHL.

There have been players coming and going between the Caps and the Bears while several regular players remain on the injured list. Meanwhile, the Islanders have been facing similar health issues. With Rick DePietro injured after only three games this season, Joey MacDonald (39th NHL game) was between the pipes for New York, with Yann Danis as the backup. With the loss in his first game facing Washington, MacDonald's record fell to 10-10-2. He was named the NHL's Third Star for November 2008 though, going 8-5-1 with a 2.64 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. MacDonald looked sharp for most of this game, even though four shots (fifth was empty net) got by him.

Brent Johnson blocks Andy Hilbert's shot attempt.

Although he would later on miss some of the first period after a collision, it was Alex Ovechkin (NHL's First Star for November) who scored the first goal of the game at 11:31, during a power play. The Isles left him all alone, and he snapped one in from the left face off dot. Less than two minutes later, Viktor Kozlov deflected in a Bryan Helmer slapshot for another PPG. Sami Lepisto set up Helmer for his shot, earning Lepisto his fourth assist in five games played. At 19:24, New York cut the lead back to one with a power play goal of their own, when Mark Streit scored with Brent Johnson heavily screened.

About a third of the way through the second period, a couple weird events occured. First a Chris Campoli slapshot from the neutral zone deflected into the Caps' net off of a linesman, so it didn't count as a goal. Shortly after, the puck deflected off of Kozlov's skate in Washington's end, sending it all the way to the far end of the ice. The puck barely missed the empty net, while the Isles had an extra attacker on the ice. At 13:38, a very open Trent Hunter scored the first non PP goal of the game for New York, knotting the game at 2-2.

Eric Fehr and Brooks Laich celebrate Fehr's goal.

Rookie defenseman Karl Alzner recorded his first NHL point in the third period, with a very intelligent play that earned him an assist. Milan Jurcina sent the puck across the offensive zone ice to Alzner. With no passing or shooting lanes open, he elected to intentionally bank the puck off the end boards. Donald Brashear gained control of the puck and sent a soft backhand shot in for what later turned out to be the game winning goal. It was Brashear's first regular season goal since March 3, 2008. The Caps weren't done scoring yet. Eric Fehr backhanded the puck past MacDonald from a sharp angle during a power play at 16:14, while following up on Brooks Laich's attempt to bang in a rebound from Ovechkin's long range blast. As with Jurcina, Laich's third period assist was his second of the game. Laich and Jurcina had also assisted on Ovie's first period goal. Alex gained his second assist of the evening on the games' fifth and final goal. He grabbed the rebound from a shot on Washington's goal and skated the puck all the way into the offensive zone. Ovechkin passed the puck to Nicklas Backstrom, who had joined him in a two on one drive. Backstrom recorded his seventh goal of the season, when he sent the puck into the empty net with 49.8 seconds left on the clock.

Unlike a lot of games so far this season, the Caps power play worked well in this one, as they potted three. Like in a lot of games though, Ovechkin had another multi-point effort, with one goal and two assists. Viktor Kozlov was hard worker, creating scoring chances throughout the game. Washington shouldn't be proud of their nine penalties. But their penalty killing, secondary scoring and Brent Johnson's massive 47 saves, helped them overcome their mistakes to defeat the New York Islanders for the first time in a long while. The Caps needed a win, and they got it with an aggressive and relentless team effort.

Hurricanes Vs Capitals 11/06/2008 Review

Hurricanes 2 - Capitals 3

It was the Carolina Hurricanes's turn to be disappointed last night. Until the final few minutes of the game, it looked like they might eek out a victory over the Washington Capitals. Thankfully for Caps fans, Alexander Semin and his mates had a couple surprises in store for the Canes.

Things were looking good for Carolina after Scott Walker tipped in the first goal, on the very first shot of the game. First shot goals have now happened to the Capitals in four of their first 12 starts. After that though, Washington relied on another solid performance by goalie Brent Johnson, and their recently recovered forechecking skills to get them safely through the first period.

The goaltending of Cam Ward had been giving the Caps fits through the first, but at 3:05 in the second period, Sergei Fedorov's wrist shot found the back of the net. Even though Washington seemed to have lost their edge somewhat, it took until 12:13 for Tuomo Ruutu to score and put Carolina back ahead. Some respect was definitely earned by forward Brooks Laich in the second. He blocked a hard shot with a leg at one point, which took him down to the ice for a minute. After a couple attempts, he was able to get up and slowly make his way to the bench. Along the way, he blocked a Carolina defender's pass. Brooks spent a few minutes in the dressing room, before returning to play.

The Capitals' regained their edge, and came out full of energy in the third period. At 17:17, Alexander Semin tied the game. Alex Ovechkin passed the puck to Semin, who brought it around to the front of the net and sent it in through a good bit of traffic. It started looking like we were headed to overtime. Then Ovechkin skated the puck up the ice. He probably should have shot the puck, but he elected to pass it to Semin instead. Semin barely got a hold of it, and with about 11 seconds left on the clock, snapped in the game winner. Caps fans, including yours truly, shot up from their seats and cheered their fannies off. No matter what you might have thought about the rest of the game, that was a great way to end it.

No power play goals yet again. However, the penalty killing keeps on rolling. Brent Johnson was great in net. Alexander Semin had another multiple goal game, and Alex Ovechkin had the primary assist on all three Washington goals scored.

I experienced this game from high up in section 406, along with my hockey buddy and daughter, Chelsea. We also brought a friend of hers, who didn't know anything about hockey. She thought the pounding that Donald Brashear handed out to Wade Brookbank was "hilarious". Even though you can see everything from up in the 400 level, as you would expect, it's just not quite as good an experience as our normal 100 level seats. I usually opt for the good seats because we don't make it down from Harford County, MD very often. One of the worst things about the evening was the sound system. We couldn't make out what was being announced most of the time. But, we still enjoyed the game. Since I got the tickets for free, I guess I shouldn't complain very much. We hope to make it back again, real soon.

Capitals On Comcast SportsNet Sept. 2008 Part 1

It's becoming obvious that the 2008-2009 NHL Hockey season is getting close to starting, as Comcast SportsNet began to increase coverage of the Washington Capitals this past week.

The folowing videos include some interesting early September activity. The first shows the local media at a one day fantasy camp type event, getting instruction from goalie Brent Johnson and tough guy forward Donald Brashear. The second is Cap's head coach Bruce Boudreau being his usual entertaining self on Washington Post Live.

Flyers Vs Capitals 04/11/2008 EC Quarterfinal Game 1 Review

Flyers 4 - Capitals 5

While the Philadelphia Flyers' top two forwards scored all their goals, the Washington Capitals' got some help from the fourth line in another typically dramatic come from behind Capitals win. Three of the Capitals ended up with a multi point effort in Washington's first playoff game since 2003.

The Capitals started off pretty well in the first period, with fourth line forward Donald Brashear putting the Cap's on the scoreboard at 3:16. Defenseman Tom Poti took a long range shot that was deflected toward Brashear by linemate Matt Bradley. Donald took the loose puck and made a fine move to the right side of the net before putting it past Philadelphia's netminder Martin Biron. I bet it felt good getting a playoff goal against his former team. Unfortunately, Flyers' RW forward Vinny Prospal evened the score about five minutes later, right off a draw. Washington's goalie Cristobal Huet never saw it coming. He had three guys screening the shot, including Caps' defensemen Milan Jurcina and Mike Green. Philadelphia's Scott Hartnell was the Flyer camping out at the crease, as usual.

The second period started off much like the first, with fourth line center scoring a goal at 4:08. Matt Bradley was in on this one too. He dumped the puck deep into the Flyers end, drawing two defenders along with him as he retrieved the puck. Then, while facing the end wall, Brads sent the puck between his legs and back toward Dave Steckel. Steckel roofed his first NHL level playoff goal, glove side. After that, the Flyers started to get a little nasty. Like when Scottie Upshall took a shot around the middle of the period. While Huet was trying to make the save, Jeff Carter followed up the shot by jamming his stick into Huet's crotch. That went unnoticed by the referees. The slash by Danny Briere behind the net was called at 9:38. But, Washington failed to score with the man advantage. Worse yet, Mike Knuble fed an outlet pass to Briere, as he was released from the penalty box two minutes later. Briere snapped it past Huet to tie the score 2-2. Cristobal seemed a little shaky for the most of the second period. With the Capitals' defense not being quite as aggressive as they should've been at the same time, Washington wasn't looking very good. When Prospal made it 3-2 after a turnover at the end of a Cap's line change, the stunned fans were quiet for the first time in weeks. A flicker of doubt went through my mind, when Briere got his second on a lucky back door chance about three minutes later.

As soon as the third period started, you could tell that the Capitals were back on line. The coaches and the veteren players with Stanley Cup Playoff experience must have straightened out the younger guys during the second intermission. In his first playoff game at the NHL level, Mike Green scored at 1:50 into the third. LW forward Alexander Semin passed the puck from the left sidewall to Sergei Fedorov at the far edge of the faceoff circle. Fedorov dished the puck to Green as he drove in on the other side. Green put it in past Biron, who tripped Mike as he crossed the top of the crease. With the Cap's resurging, Philadelphia took a few more cheap shots. Semin was hooked and Huet was downed in his crease. The ref's finally called a penalty, when Briere high sticked Matt Bradley. It sure looked intentional to me, as there was no reason for him to lift his stick up so high and horizontally. The Capitals made good use of this power play. Nicklas Backstrom passed the puck to Mike Green, who fired a hard slapshot that hit Flyer Patrick Thoresen. Alex Ovechkin grabbed the puck and sent it back to Green. Green's second slapper went in at 6:26 to tie the game at 4-4. The boys did another one of those pile up celebrations, and the crowd's volume went up another notch or two.

During the third period, Washington's defense was doing a much better job of keeping Philadelphia away from the front of the net. The whole team was energized and made more good clean hits. With about 4 1/2 minutes left, Alex Ovechkin got his first playoff goal. Alex poke checked a lazy pass by Lasse Kukkonen. He beat Kukkonen to the puck and snapped it past Biron for the game winner. The crowd leapt to their feet and screamed M-V-P!...M-V-P!...M-V-P!

The middle period was a little rough, but the Capitals got their first playoff win since April 12, 2003. In typical Capitals' fashion, they came from behind scoring three of their five goals in the third period alone. Also typical, it was Alex Ovechkin with the goal that put it away for good. Like you, I can't wait for game two.

Capitals Vs Devils 02/29/2008 Review

.
.
The Washington Capitals, along with new goaltender Cristobal Huet and new center Sergei Fedorov, shut out Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. The Capitals seemed to be in control for the entire game. Huet only faced 18 shots, but was solid in net, getting the shutout in his first game with Washington. Fedorov finished his first game as a Cap, with 1 assist and 3 shots. He also won 10 out of 13 faceoffs. The win in this final game of the regular season series vs the Devils brings the record to 2-2.
.
This was a quick moving game, especially in the first period. Fedorov did spend 2:00 in the penalty box for a roughing call toward the end of the period. But otherwise, he was amazing. He skates as well and as fast as anybody. Obviously, he doesn't shy away from hitting. Meanwhile, Huet had no trouble stopping all six shots fired his way by New Jersey. Washington only managed four shots on Brodeur, and the period ended 0-0.
.

The second period was a little more interesting. Cap's forward David Steckel had a couple good chances early on, but was unable to get the puck into the net. Toward the middle of the period, Huet made a couple excellent saves, including a big one on a Zach Parise breakaway. Washington went on the power play at 10:36, when Andy Greene was called for tripping. Brodeur was able to stop shots by Sergei Fedorov, Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green during the 2:00 man advantage. But, the Cap's got the PP goal at 11:27 on a snapshot from Green. The play started with a perfect no look backward pass from Fedorov to Alexander Semin, who sent the puck over to Green. That would be the only goal of the period. During the last few minutes of the second, both goalies were able to stop all shots. Washington forward Viktor Kozlov took one in the body for a stop as well. The stats were pretty even through two periods, except the Capitals were well ahead in faceoffs.

Just 43 seconds into the third period, Kozlov scored his 13th goal of the season. This time, Nicklas Backstrom left a drop pass for Ovechkin, who sent a cross ice pass to Viktor. Kozlov then roofed a short side wrister, making the score 2-0. At 5:47, the Devil's Patrik Elias high sticked Mike Green. He was awarded a 4:00 double minor for bloodying Mike's nose in the process. The Cap's moved the puck very well during the power play, as they had for the whole game. A frustrated Ovechkin, wasn't able to hit the mark. As they had been doing throughout the game, the Cap's were cycling the puck, forcing Brodeur back and forth in front of his net. Then, defenseman Tom Poti sent a cross ice pass to Semin. Alex's wrist shot went in for his 20th goal on the season. Toward the end of the period, Poti got another assist. He got the puck to Matt Bradley, who passed it to Donald Brashear in the slot. Brashear's top shelf slapper put the Capitals ahead 4-0.

It was Huet's third shutout of the season, and the 16th of his career. Washington made it look easy. It was their second straight win, and their second consecutive four goal game. There wasn't much, if anything you could complain about. Plenty of scoring, fine goaltending, and the defense pretty much kept the Devils toward the outer limits of the Cap's zone. Plenty to smile about. After the game, head coach Bruce Boudreau complimented his players for their efforts. When asked, he said netminder Olie Kolzig would get the start in tomorrow's home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Devils Vs Capitals 02/24/2008 Review

.
.
The Washington Capitals played much better against the New Jersey Devils yesterday than they had against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Good enough to win, in fact. The defense remembered how to keep the front of their own net clear. But, the Devils defense did a fair job guarding their net, and their goaltender did an excellent job on anything that got past them. The Cap's had to settle for the single point that came with the sudden death overtime that ended...well....suddenly.
.
The game started off with some rather quick moving, back and forth play. That's not terribly common during a game involving the Devils, but the Cap's kept the puck moving. They got many more shots and scoring chances than New Jersey was able to come up with in the first period. Brent Johnson must have felt a little lonely in front of Washington's net. Meanwhile, at the other end, the Capitals were taking their shots and ringing the post. Netminder Martin Brodeur was stopping everything with his "snow angels". Personally, I refer to his style as "floppin' like a fish". But, whatever works for yuh Marty. Problem is....it does work for him. The best thing that happened in the first was probably the Donald Brashear vs Sheldon Brookbank fight. Sheldon put a late hit on Brash well after he cleared the puck. Apparently, Shelly didn't talk to his brother Wade, who got pummeled by Donald just yesterday. I'm sure he regrets the decision now. The last 1:18 of the period was spent in the Cap's end due to a hooking penalty called on Sami Lepisto. Washington's defenseman, including the incredible Quintin Laing helped Johnson keep the Devils off the scoreboard.
.

About five minutes into the second period, we almost got another fight. After Johnson gloved his shot, New Jersey's Travis Zajac continued in toward the goal and poked Brent with the business end of his stick. What would make this guy who had just been released from serving time for a hooking penalty, do such a thing? The Cap's continued to play well, and clueless Devils kept trying to pick fights with Brashear. Dirtball Johnny Oduya tried to take out Alex Ovechkin with a terribly obvious intentional knee on knee collision at the side wall. Ovie was down for a minute, but luckily seemed fine later. There will be no suspension for Oduya, but it sure should be at least reviewed. Both, Brooks Laich and Ovechkin had really good chances on some nice efforts. But, the period would end still scoreless. However, Eric Fehr and Tom Poti were each called for high sticking. So, the end of the period was all played in the Cap's end, with Laing clearing the puck just before time ran out. .

The remaining 40 seconds of a Devils' 5 on 3 power play to start the third period, was enough to get New Jersey on the board first. Just enough, as Jamie Langenbrunner got his first goal in six games with one second of the two man advantage left. Just over two minutes later, Washington's Alex Semin answered back with a backhand goal, assisted by Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Semin now has a five game goal scoring streak. Backstrom's assist gave him his 50th point of this, his rookie season. Ovechkin's assist put him in a tie for the most points so far this season with 82. Ovechkin had a couple drives to the net during the balance of the second, that brought the crowd to it's feet. But, neither team managed to hit the back of the net before the period ended. One of the Devils did manage to hit one of the robotic cameras, which kept the puck from exiting the rink. This should've been a delay of game penalty for New Jersey, but somehow the referees didn't even notice, and play was allowed to continue.

With a 1-1 tie, the game went into overtime. The Capitals continued making good offensive and defensive plays. But, during a split second of casualness by Brent Johnson, New Jersey's John Madden slipped a Patrik Elias rebound between the pads. So, the game ended suddenly, after just 49.6 seconds of OT. The overtime point moves the Cap's up to 5 points behind Southeast Conference leading Carolina, with two more games in hand.
