Lately, I've been getting into a lot of Soul and R & B music. More particularly, I have been checking out artists and bands within these genres of music, that are of British origin. One of my favorite British groups to listen to right now are the Soulnaturals, especially when featuring singer Lotus D at the lead. Read on to find out why they were chosen for this 'Today's Tune' post, here at Junior's Eyes.

I live in an area near Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States. Therefore, it's impossible for me to not be aware of the Baltimore Ravens, our local NFL team. I would have to describe myself as being an extremely casual fan of American football, at least until my local team gets into the playoffs. Of course, I watched the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Obviously, I was rooting for the Ravens. Defenseman Ray Lewis has been one of the team's most respected leaders, and the incredibly popular player had announced weeks ago he was to retire after this season. So for that and many other reasons, I was very hopeful that he and the Ravens could go all the way, and win Super Bowl XLVII. I was so glad that they did win, and are now the Super Bowl champions, for a second time. See Ray's tweet from the plane ride home. It was fun to see who else was joining in, and showing interest, too.

For me, the song that kept coming to mind during the playoffs and championship game, was "Rise Brother Rise". It's the latest single by the Soulnaturals, featuring Lotus D, and it's our chosen track for this 'Today's Tune'. Their London, England recording label, British Soul Standard, even chimed in on the Superbowl via Twitter.

Today's Tune: "Rescue Me" By Y & T

Happy Birthday to Denis Leary! American comedian, television and film actor, writer and director, Leary turned 54 years old today. The Massachusetts native, and son of Irish immigrants is well known for his fiery, angry style of comedic delivery. His stand-up act consists largely of anti-conformist rants.

Many have complained that Denis Leary copied his stage persona and some of his material directly from his former close friend, the now deceased (pancreatic cancer) American comedian, Bill Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994). I can't say for sure that none of the accusations are true, but don't comics steal / borrow from and emulate other performers all the time? Of course, they usually take from retired and already dead comedy legends. Leary and Hicks did spend a lot of time around each other though, climbing up the ranks together.

Moving along here, this 'Today's Tune' relates to the television drama, Rescue Me (2004 - 2011). The show was created by Denis Leary and Peter Tolan. Leary also stars in the series, which is about the personal lives of a fictional group of New York firefighters.

The selected track comes from the US rock band Y & T. The original recording first showed up on their third studio album, 'Earthshaker' (Recorded 1980 / Released 1981). The song has the same title as Leary's show. Please enjoy "Rescue Me".

Today's Tune: "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" By Mari Wilson

Mari Wilson and her giant beehive hairdo, along with her smooth, comforting voice, make it into today's 'Today's Tune' (Dig the echo!). This happens because I wanted to honor a very hot and very talented New Zealand born Engish television and film actress on her special day. Happy Birthday to the lovely Gina Bellman!

The connection here (obviously) is Bellman's time starring as the quirky Jane Christie, in the fantastically funny Steven Moffat TV comedy, Coupling (UK 2000–2004). Mari Wilson's cover version of "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" is the theme song played, in part, to open and close each episode of the show.

You may also remember Gina Bellman for her roles in Blackeyes (1989 TV Drama), Jekyll (2007 TV Horror-Drama), and currently as grifter Sophie Devereaux in Leverage (2008-Present TV Drama).

Today's Tune: "Dirty Women" By Black Sabbath

Happy Birthday to Richard Wilson! On July 9, 1936, Wilson was born (Ian Colquhoun Wilson) in Greenock, a town in the old county of Renfrewshire, in Scotland. He has spent many years as a very well respected actor, theatre director and broadcaster. Wilson is mostly remembered for playing the very unlucky and grumpy old Victor Meldrew, for more than 10 years, in the BBC sitcom One Foot In The Grave.

Currently, Richard portrays Gaius, Camelot's court physician, in BBC's television drama Merlin.

For this 'Today's Tune', we draw upon the title of the 1999 Scottish comedy film 'Women Talking Dirty', which starred Richard Wilson alongside the likes of Gina McKee ('Notting Hill', 'Greyfriars Bobby', 'Scenes Of A Sexual Nature'), Helena Bonham Carter ('Henry VIII', 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows', 'The King's Speech') and James Nesbitt (Cold Feet, 'Jekyll', 'Five Minutes Of Heaven'). It's screenplay and the novel it was based upon were both written by Isla Dewar ('Dancing In A Distant Place', 'Secrets Of A Family Album', 'Giving Up On Ordinary').

Our featured track for this installment is the somewhat similarly titled "Dirty Women", a fun Black Sabbath tune, full of great guitar licks by metal riff master Tony Iommi.

Today's Tune: Liza Minnelli Sings 'Cabaret' Song "Maybe This Time"

Happy Birthday Craig Ferguson! Born in Glasgow, Scotland on May 17, 1962, the comedian, actor and talk show host's most notable work has been in the United States. Ferguson became a US citizen in 2008.

British comedy films 'Saving Grace' (2000) and 'I'll Be There' (2003), both co-written by and starring Craig Ferguson are probably among his acting role movies that are viewed the most. His time working in television, with The Drew Carey Show (1996 - 2004) and his current talk show host job on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson (2005 - present), have most likely been his best received efforts overall.

For the source of our 'Today's Tune' inspiration however, we go back to the period of September 1995 to February 1996, when Craig Ferguson starred alongside Betty White and Marie Osmond in the American TV comedy Maybe This Time. Although I'd completely forgotten about this show, I'm pretty sure I watched some of it.

My selection of music that relates to that bit of Craigy, is also titled "Maybe This Time". The song is from the 1972 film version of 'Cabaret', and is sung by Liza Minnelli. The tune replaced one of the omitted pieces from the original 1966 Broadway musical 'Cabaret', on which it was loosely based.

Happy Birthday Paul Reiser! American comedian, actor, writer and musician, Reiser turns 54 years old today. His big acting break came way back in 1982, when he appeared in the Barry Levinson comedy-drama film, Diner.

Paul has a new half-hour sitcom called The Paul Reiser Show slated to air on NBC starting April 14, 2011, as a midseason replacement for Perfect Couples. This 'Today's Tune' double bill includes two tracks linked by two produtions that entertained us between the Levinson movie and the upcoming small screen venture.

Reiser acted alongside several popular stars in the 1995 comedy-drama 'Bye Bye, Love'. Appropriately, our first tune "Bye Bye Love" (1978) is supplied by The Cars. The second, "Final Frontier" was written by Reiser and Don Was for his TV comedy mega-hit (with Helen Hunt), Mad About You (1992 - 1999). Andrew Gold sang the original version, which was used as the show's theme song from 1992 to half way through the 1997 season, when a new version (called "Mad About You – The Final Frontier") performed by Anita Baker (Paul and Anita live clip) took it's place. The original version was used as a wake-up call for the Mars Pathfinder space probe in 1996. I'm not sure who it was suppossed to wake up, but Gold's voice is probably the first to have been emitted on the surface of Mars.

Today's Tune: John Sullivan's "Dear John"

Rest In Peace, Ralph Bates (February 12, 1940 – March 27, 1991). English film and television actor Bates, is most famous for his work in Hammer Horror films (1970s), the TV historical fiction drama Poldark (1975 - 1977) and situation comedy Dear John. He also played one of the lead roles in the far too short lived science fiction series Moonbase 3 (1973), a creation of Doctor Who producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks.

Ralph starred as the main character in the original UK version of Dear John, a hilarious show written by John Sullivan, which ran for two years. There was also a US version, starring Judd Hirsch (Delvecchio, Taxi, Numb3rs) in the role of John Lacey, that lasted for four years. I loved this show, and how the version we saw in the states was so close to the original. The opening, the individual characters and their names, were almost exactly the same in both.

Dear John series writer John Sullivan also wrote the theme song, which is our 'Today's Tune', this instalment.
