So What Does The Fact The Hershey Bears Repeated
As Calder Cup Champs Mean For the Caps and Other Musings....

By Usually Frustrated Caps Fan at Mark's Musings

Last night, the Hershey Bears repeated as AHL Calder Cup Champions. The Bears claimed the 2010 Calder Cup at home with a fairly impressive, and fairly dominating 4-0 victory over the Texas Stars. I watched the majority of the game on NHL Network and had several musings at the time that I've thought some more about this morning and might be worth sharing.

During the game it occurred to me that it's clear there is likely little to be gained through another season in the AHL for the development of the following players: John Carlson, Karl Alzner, Mathieu Perrault, and Michael Neuvirth. All four of these guys should be on the Capitals rooster for the entirety of next season...

2009-10 Rink Wrap: George McPhee
Posted by David M. Getz at Japers' Rink

J.P.: Alright, let's wrap our raps with the master architect of this year's team, General Manager of the Year finalist George McPhee. Simple question with probably a not-so-simple answer: from a personnel perspective, were the pieces there for the Capitals to achieve their ultimate goal this past season?

David M. Getz: I certainly think so. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Capitals were the archetypal Stanley Cup team, that they didn't have holes, or that they should be happy enough with their personnel that they don't make changes this offseason, but I do think they had the talent to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender...

Bears Win 11th Calder Cup
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Lather, Rinse, Repeat – Drama played a part in each of the first five games of the Calder Cup final series between the Hershey Bears and the Texas Stars, but there was no drama in the house for Monday’s Game 6. Hershey imposed its will upon Texas from the get-go, rolling to a 4-0 win and the 11th Calder Cup championship of the franchise’s storied history.

Hershey becomes the first team to repeat as Calder Cup champions since the Springfield Indians in 1990 and 1991. It also becomes the first team in AHL history to win the Calder Cup after dropping the first two games of the final series on home ice...

2009-10 Rink Wrap: Bruce Boudreau
Posted by J.P. at Japers' Rink

JP: Let's start with the regular season. The Caps ran away with the Eastern Conference and won the Presidents' Trophy handily. How much of that do you attribute to the guy behind the bench?

Stephen Pepper: I think Coach Boudreau deverses most all of the credit typically given the bench boss of a Presidents' Trophy winning team, by getting his players to perform to their regular season abilities, and consistently...

...Saxon, albeit in their umpteenth incarnation, are still sounding huge after three decades on the touring hamster wheel.

But it’s Slash who provides the first genuine ‘moment’ of the day though. Proving a deep understanding of festival crowds, his set is stuffed with Guns N’ Roses hits such as Rocket Queen, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Paradise City which are howled along to by the happy drunks in the pit. Hershey Hopes to Hoist Cup at Home
By Mike Vogel at Dump 'N Chase

...Can the Stars come back to Hershey and win the series by winning the last two games on the road? They did exactly that to take Calder Cup playoff series wins from both Chicago and Hamilton earlier in the postseason. Texas has proven itself a formidable foe, but it’s hard to see the Bears losing four home games in a playoff series.

Hershey can claim its 11th Calder Cup title simply by winning one of its next two games. Bears fans scarfed up more than 10,000 tickets to Monday’s Game 6 when they went on sale last week; the game sold out in a matter of hours...

Friday analysis - Red Bull keep their cool in Montreal

Lower than expected ambient and track temperatures caused a lot of head-scratching on Friday afternoon in Canada as teams found Bridgestone’s super-soft option tyre sliding around and therefore graining badly because they could not generate their operating temperature, whereas the medium-compound primes had been fine in the morning. We take a team-by-team look at progress in Montreal ahead of this weekend’s Canadian event...

Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in Friday afternoon’s second practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver lapped in 1m 16.877s, and only Fernando Alonso with 1m 16.963s for Ferrari got anywhere close to him.

The indications were, however, that most were centred on race running, as the majority of the remaining fast times were set early in the 90-minute period...

There was plenty of action as Formula One cars once again hammered round the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday morning, as Jenson Button set the pace for McLaren in opening practice for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The reigning champion was on strong form with a lap of 1m 18.127s in overcast but dry conditions, but it was tight at the top as Mercedes were also in the fight. Button’s lap was 0.158s quicker than Michael Schumacher’s best of 1m 18.285s, and right behind the legendary German came Lewis Hamilton...

So You May Have Noticed and A Few Musings ...

...Of note to me as a Capitals fan is the fact that Patrick Sharp, in addition to UFA John Madden might be available. While neither Sharp nor Madden are likely available for a price that the Capitals can afford under the Salary Cap without other moves, but who knows. Either would be a great addition and a super fill for the second line center here in DC. Sharp would be, IMO awesome. Of course, bringing in Sharp would likely mean that after next season that Young Gun Alexander Semin won't be affordable so in the planning perspective that might not make sense to GMGM. 2009-10 Rink Wrap: Semyon Varlamov
Posted by J.P. at Japers' Rink

Key Stat: Varlamov's playoff numbers (2.49 goals against average and .915 save percentage) are better than his regular season stats (2.52/.911) two seasons into his career... with one exception (and, unfortunately, it's the one that matters most) - he's won 59.4% of his regular season decisions and 52.6% of them in the postseason.

Interesting Stat: Varlamov is fourth in franchise history in playoff wins (and third in GAA and SV%).

The Good: Varlamov's second season in North America got off to a shaky start (more on that below), but overall he continued his winning ways, running his career record to 16-1-3/2.25/.923 (and season mark to 12-1-2/2.20/.924) before suffering a lower-body injury in December...

Interesting Stat: Both of Theodore's assists came on the power play, a secondary assist on an Alexander Semin goal against Detroit and a primary assist on a Nicklas Backstrom goal vs. Ottawa.

The Good: Theodore picked up his fourth career 30+ win season, passing the 30-win plateau for the second straight year and picking up just two fewer wins than last year in ten fewer games played...

Key Stat: Sloan's ice time varied across the board, with half of his forty games clocking in at over fifteen minutes and ten games under ten minutes. He crossed the twenty minute plateau only three times during the season.

Interesting Stat: Half of Sloan's points came in the first eight games he played; two of the last three came in his last six games of the season.

If you listen to "Put Out The Fire", a QUEEN song which I wrote God knows how many years ago, you can tell where my feelings have always been. ...In the USA, the National Riflemen's Association grinds away, with huge money and power behind it, defending the 'Right to Bear Arms' - a justifying phrase glibly quoted from the US constitution which was actually almost certainly put there to make it possible to defend the USA against invaders from outside, not inside. I was finally given permission to use this video today. I wanted to make sure that Ralph Baker, Gloria Butler, & Wendy Dio were all on board with me using it. Interesting Stat: Semin has the best regular season plus-minus (+61) among NHL forwards over the past two seasons.

The Good: Semin put up some awfully pretty impressive numbers in the regular season, including top-ten finishes in goals, goals created, plus-minus, even-strength goals, points per game, goals created per game, multi-goal- and multi-point games...

Bears Drop Game 1, 2-1
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Unfamiliar Territory – The Hershey Bears dropped Game 1 of their 2010 Calder Cup final series with the Texas Stars by a 2-1 score at Giant Center on Thursday night. The loss puts the Bears behind in a series for the first time in the 2010 playoffs. Texas leads 1-0 with Game 2 on tap for Saturday at Giant Center.

“There is still a lot of confidence in the room but obviously we’ve got to rebound and play a better 60-minute game and probably a smarter, more intelligent game in Game 2,” says Bears coach Mark French...

2009-10 Rink Wrap: Jeff Schultz
Posted by J.P. at Japers' Rink

Key Stats: Schultz tied with teammate Mike Green for the best plus-minus in hockey over the past two seasons, and trailed only Nicklas Lidstrom and Duncan Keith among blueliners over the past three campaigns.

Interesting Stat: Schultz is the first defenseman to finish a season with a plus-50 rating or better since Chris Pronger in 1999-2000.

The Good: Sarge, a healthy scratch on Opening Night, responded to an increased role (that of first-pairing rearguard, partnered with the game's most dynamic offensive defenseman) by shattering personal bests...

Key Stat: Poti's +9 is still tied for second-highest in the playoffs among defensemen, one behind League-leader Brent Seabrook.

Interesting Stat: Poti played a total of 253 minutes shorthanded during the regular season, the highest on the team - and over a full game more than the next defenseman, Jeff Schultz (192:55).

The Good: Poti took more shifts per game than any other player on the team - and often against some pretty tough competition - and still managed to achieve a career best +26 on the season. Two of his four goals...

2009-10 Rink Wrap: Shaone Morrisonn
Posted by Stephen Pepper at Japers' Rink

Key Stat: Increased his Hits/G from 1.54 in 2008-09 to 2.4 last season.

Interesting Stat: Morrisonn's goal totals for each regular season since the lockout, in order: one; three; one; three; and one. Looks like ShaMo's good for three goals next season.

The Good: While Morrisonn used to be seen as the perfect foil for the more freewheeling Mike Green, he spent time paired with a number of other D during last season, including Brian Pothier, Tom Poti, and John Carlson. Finally, he settled in with Joe Corvo after the trade deadline...

The 2009-2010 season, by the "tens"
-- Goaltenders: Jose Theodore

By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

...Jose Theodore had a year that by any standard was as heart-wrenching as one could ever imagine. Having to embark on a year engaged in his profession – a very public one at that – after having endured a private tragedy that would have many retreating away from a public life had to be in a realm of difficulty that most could only dimly imagine.

That Theodore could perform at such a high level for long stretches this season speaks highly of his fortitude and resolve – 30-7-7, 2.81, .911, one shutout, a club record season winning percentage (.761), a club record for longest winning streak by a goaltender (ten games), club record for career winning percentage (.694)...

Hershey Bears defenseman Patrick McNeill was second among the team’s rearguards in regular season scoring. Interesting Stat: Morrison had a plus-23 rating on the road and an even rating at home in 2009-10.

The Good: Morrison's season started out well (as noted above), and helped propel him towards his highest point total since 2006-07 (when he had 20 goals and 51 points for the Canucks). His plus-23 rating was a career best...

2009-10 Rink Wrap: Quintin Laing
Posted by J.P. at Japers' Rink

Key Stat: At 30-years-old, Laing spent the entirety of the 2009-10 campaign in the NHL (with the exception of a brief conditioning stint), the first time he has done so in his career.
Interesting Stat: Both of Laing's goals came in the third period of tied games.

The Good: Laing doubled his single-season career high in goals in 2009-10 and he was well-disciplined (taking only one minor penalty in 36 games other than the instigator and unsportsmanlike conduct he received in St. Louis - more on that in a bit), but the real "good" for Quintin Laing starts and ends with his willingness to sacrifice his body for the team...

The 2009-2010 season, by the "tens"
-- Defensemen: John Erskine

By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

...Head over to the “real time stats,” and you’ll see where the value of a player such as Erskine lies. He finished fifth on the team in hits (third in hits per game), fifth in blocked shots. And on a team that lacked a true bruiser to keep the peace, Erskine was part of enforcement-by-committee, finishing second on the club in fighting major penalties. And he hardly took on any shrinking violets in his four bouts. The opponents he faced – Chris Thorburn, David Koci, Georges Laraque, and Shawn Thornton – combined for 45 fights among them.

Erskine’s was a tough role to play, one that does not necessarily show up in his 10-game segments...

The 2009-2010 season, by the "tens"
-- Defensemen: Tyler Sloan

By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

...Sloan is probably not a 70-game, 15 minute a night defenseman. He is, however, useful as a player who can plug a hole for a week or so at a time in the event of injury. Although he skated only two games in Hershey this season, the role he plays is somewhat typical of how the Caps have used the Bears. There are a lot of guys up the road who have come down the road to fill a role in a pinch. For example, last night’s Hershey lineup in their AHL Eastern Conference-clinching win over Manchester featured 12 players (of 20 who dressed) who played in DC over the past two seasons...

A New Era in DC Sports Deserves a Proper Name
By pucksandbooks at On Frozen Blog

...Friday afternoon Leonsis answered a thorny question with deft heft, managing to acknowledge the sizable and long-standing discomfort many natives have had with the queer name of our basketball team while simultaneously reminding that the renaming involved no small amount of personal discomfort for the Pollin family. He staked out, and achieved, a higher ground for the populist discussion.

And yet, reading between the lines in a manner frankly Leonsis invited us to, the name ‘Wizards’ and its colors don’t seem long much more for Washington. Were he merely indifferent to the name he could have replied to my question with, ‘We have a perfectly fine name for our basketball team, so why change it?’...

The Good: Laich continued his steady development into a consistent point producer, posting his third straight 20+ goal season and the fifth highest point total on the team...
