2013 F1 Australian Grand Prix Review

Formula One racing is back, as the 2013 Formula One season got started this past Sunday - March 17, 2013, with the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. The Albert Park area's Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, in Melbourne, Australia, was the venue for the season opener, which brought a few surprises to F1 racing experts.

Surprising to probably everyone, was the lack of safety-car involvement in an incident free grand prix. It just doesn't happen very much. If there aren't even any minor crashes, there's usually at least one mechanical failure somewhere on the track, often in a fairly precarious location.

The biggest surprise, at least for the supposed experts, was who came out on top in the end. They couldn't seem to believe who won the race, even though he had been a GP champion, not really all that long ago. Then again, maybe it was the former champ's team organization that was the real surprise. Their name hasn't been anywhere near the top of the class for several years, though they did start to get some attention last season, with this driver's return to Formula One.

The top three finishers on the day, were: 2007 season World Champion Kimi Räikkönen (Finland), driving a Lotus-Renault, won the race; Fernando Alonso (Spain), another former champion, brought his Scuderia Ferrari in second; Third best, was the top guy of the past couple years, Red Bull-Renault driver Sebastian Vettel (Germany).

Who would have thought that a guy who had 69 previous career podium finishes, and who had already won 19 races over the course of his career, could've managed it? Who would possibly imagine former champion Kimi Räikkönen could manage to win one lousy season opening race? Well, me for one. I mean, why not? It's just one freaking race, anyway. Taking time off from Formula One to try a little WRC rally driving, didn't ruin you. Go Lotus! Go Kimi Räikkönen!

F1 fans look set for a thrilling 2013 season, if Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix was anything to go by. The podium featured three champions, but there were scintillating battles throughout the field, including among 2013’s five rookie drivers, all of who finished their first Grand Prix...

Posted at Formula1.com on September 25, 2010

However you look at it, with all five championship contenders qualifying in the top five, a great race is in prospect on Sunday. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso may be on pole position, but there's no doubt Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, will do all they can to stop Alonso claiming a second successive win. We take a team-by-team look at where things stand after qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix...

Race - Alonso claims superb Singapore win
Posted at Formula1.com on September 26, 2010

Fernando Alonso scored his fourth win of the season in Singapore on Sunday night after a dramatic battle with Sebastian Vettel that saw them finish only two-tenths of a second apart after a race-long fight. Points leaders Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton collided while fighting for third place on the 36th lap. Hamilton was pitched out of the race with broken suspension, and Webber brought a vibrating Red Bull home third to increase his advantage in the title fight to 202 points to Alonso's 191, Hamilton's 182, Sebastian Vettel's 181 and fourth-placed Jenson Button's 177. In the constructors' stakes, Red Bull have 383s, McLaren 359 and Ferrari 316...

Q: Fernando, another pole to flag victory but you had to work extremely hard for this one in every sense. Just 0.2 seconds the winning margin.

Singapore analysis - Alonso on the march
Posted at Formula1.com on September 27, 2010

Fernando Alonso's rise up the championship table continued apace on Sunday as he won for the second race in succession. There was little to choose between his Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull, but a stout defence of P1 at the start helped secure the Spaniard a crucial victory. With both cars on the podium, and an extended lead in both tables, Red Bull had few complaints, unlike McLaren...

Belgium analysis - McLaren strike back at Spa

Spa was never going to be Red Bull’s favourite circuit, but after clinching their 12th pole of the season on Saturday, things were looking pretty good. That was before Mark Webber's slow start, sporadic showers, a collision between Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button and two safety-car periods intervened. Amidst all the drama it was McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who kept his head to secure his first win since June - and the lead in the drivers' championship. Final practice - Red Bull remain in charge
Posted at Formula1.com on July 10, 2010

Red Bull continued their domination of practice for the British Grand Prix in Saturday morning’s final session when Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber ended up at the top of the times separated by only 0.034s. But their morning was not without drama. Vettel had lapped in 1m 30.958s and had just set the fastest time in sector one when, going into Abbey, the nose of his RB6 worked loose, allowing the front wing to scrape on the track...

Qualifying - Red Bull sweep to British pole
Posted at Formula1.com on July 10, 2010

Sebastian Vettel will start the British Grand Prix from pole position for Red Bull after narrowly beating team mate Mark Webber. The two of them were inseparable in all three sessions, but Vettel just edged out the Australian with a lap of 1m 29.615s compared to 1m 29.758s.

It then transpired that there were only two of the latest RB6 front wings available and that Vettel got the second as a replacement after his original broke in final practice this morning. A tight-lipped Webber simply said: “The team is happy with the result today”...

Mark Webber Q&A: Red Bull have a good margin
Posted at Formula1.com on July 10, 2010

Red Bull seemed to be in a league of their own on Saturday afternoon at Silverstone, with only Fernando Alonso coming close enough to look at their exhausts. Mark Webber was forced to grin and bear it as team mate Sebastian Vettel clocked pole position, but given where his other title rivals are on the grid, P2 is not a bad place to be - especially when you believe you car advantage should carry over to the race...

Race - Webber untouchable at Silverstone
Posted at Formula1.com on July 11, 2010

Mark Webber offered the greatest response to all of Red Bull’s qualifying hoopla by dominating Sunday's British Grand Prix from the start, and rebuilding his lead after a safety-car period that allowed team mate Sebastian Vettel to get back in the game after a disastrous first corner had seen the German go off track after a light brush with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. The puncture that he sustained dropped him to the tail of the field.

Hamilton challenged Webber mightily on that first lap, but it was soon clear that only a major drama could take a richly deserved success away from the Australian. He was in a class of his own, as was the indefatigable Hamilton who maintained his world championship lead with a gutsy run to second...

Lewis Hamilton Q&A: McLaren have moved forward

Slower than the competition, yet still able to maintain the championship lead - that is either good luck or an amazing ability to pull rabbits - or positions - out of the hat. McLaren’s Hamilton was the only other frontrunner to improve on his second run, but though he set the fastest times in the first and second sectors a weak middle sector restricted him to 1m 26.433s, which leaves him on the outside front-row position...

Q: Mark, I am not sure what the Australian word for deja vu is but here we go again. Third pole in a row and I suppose reward for all the reliability problems you have had this weekend.
Mark Webber: Yeah, it hasn't been the smoothest of weekends for us in terms of getting the running in. Obviously Friday was a little bit disrupted but not massively to be honest. If you could ever have a problem with the engine it is probably the right time to have it. This morning also we were not having the easiest P3 to be honest but getting ready for qualy, things started to get a bit better...

Race - McLaren one-two as Red Bulls tangle in Turkey
Posted at Formula1.com on May 30, 2010

When McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton broke his duck in 2010 he did so in dramatic style, in a Turkish Grand Prix that at one stage seemed destined to yield Red Bull yet another one-two.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber led off the line as team mate Sebastian Vettel boiled through to push slow-starting Hamilton down to third and Mercedes GP’s Michael Schumacher edged ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button for fourth. Both McLaren drivers made up a place on that opening tour...

Q&A with Red Bull’s Helmut Marko: We are not amused
Posted at Formula1.com on May 30, 2010

As Red Bull’s motorsport consultant, Dr Helmut Marko is the perfect person to ask about the incident between the team’s drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber during the Turkish Grand Prix. Watching the duo go wheel-to-wheel and then lose an almost guaranteed one-two by ending up colliding was not the ideal end to the Istanbul Park weekend. And Marko and the rest of the team are keen to have a serious word with both drivers to ensure it never happens again...

Q: Lewis, first win of the season for you. Great scrap. First with Mark, then Sebastian (Vettel) and then Jenson and finally you emerge as the winner. What a race.
Lewis Hamilton: It was quite an exciting race. We knew that we had good race pace. We knew that we would be able to stay with the Red Bulls. Unfortunately they were so fast through turn eight that it was very difficult to be able to slipstream Mark...

Q&A with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton

After Saturday’s qualifying session in Istanbul, Lewis Hamilton found himself in the promising situation of having split the Red Bulls on the grid, and contemplating whether Turkey could be a good place to start winning in 2010. Q: Mark, fastest in Q1, fastest in Q2 and this time Sebastian didn’t beat you when it counts; pole by a tenth of a second.
Mark Webber: Yeah, that’s right. Normally it’s a good battle all the way through qualifying but Seb’s had a pretty solid run in the last while in Q3 but today I had two solid laps, obviously both of them. It’s nice to go into the second lap knowing you’re already ahead. It’s a nice situation to try and build on your second lap in that way instead of being behind. But this pole is for the team...

Q&A with Red Bull’s Mark Webber

Today’s pole position was a big load off Mark Webber’s mind. The internal competition level at Red Bull is extremely high - all but inevitable with two such capable drivers - and Webber clearly demonstrated he has no intention of standing in Sebastian Vettel’s shadow. But whoever gets the break tomorrow, one thing is clear: the fans will see a mesmerizing race because the likes of Hamilton, Alonso, Button and Schumacher will be doing their utmost to spoil the Red Bull party...

Q: Mark, Fernando described you and the team on Friday as unbeatable and you proved it today. You must be very happy? Mark Webber: Yeah, absolutely rapped. After qualifying yesterday it was certainly a great position for us to start the Grand Prix in. We knew it was a long run to the first corner here and we had some pretty quick cars behind us in terms of top speed, so that was the very important part of the race to unlock that and get out of turn one still in the lead. It was quite tight into turn one. We had a good battle going into there and then I just settled into a rhythm...

It looked set to be a good day for Lewis Hamilton, with McLaren closer to Red Bull on pace, and some excellent pit work helping him leapfrog Sebastian Vettel. Then came the problem with the front-left tyre deflating and 18 points disappeared, almost within sight of the flag. Unfortunate - but having delivered a flawless race to that point, Hamilton leaves Barcelona for Monaco with a clear conscience...

Spain analysis - joy and frustration for Red Bull

Their qualifying speed, fine weather, and the difficulty of passing in Barcelona meant the odds were heavily stacked in favour of a dominant Red Bull one-two in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix. It wasn’t to be. Q: Jenson, what a race. Another great call for tyres at the start, a safety car re-start for you to control and then some heart-stopping moments in the final laps.
Jenson Button: I mean the safety car for clearing debris off the circuit was just... I had my heart in my mouth when that happened as I just did not know what was going to happen. We had built up such a good gap and then, unfortunately, everyone else caught up, so it made it very tricky. At the end of the race when we put the inters on, the new set, I felt really good. Jenson Button Q&A: China win ‘very special’

Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix saw a one-two victory, but not from the team that most had expected. Ferrari have moved to quell media reports of friction between their two drivers after Fernando Alonso’s opportunistic pass on Felipe Massa as the pair entered the pit lane during Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

The move cost Massa a place and forced him to wait while his team mate’s car was serviced, dropping the Brazilian further down the order. Massa ultimately finished ninth to Alonso’s fourth, losing his lead in the drivers’ championship in the process, but after the race both men played down the incident...
