2012 F1 Italian Grand Prix Review

Lewis Hamilton wins Formula 1 Gran Premio d'Italia 2012 on September 9, 2012.
Photo by Getty Images via The Telegraph.

The 2012 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 9, 2012. The course for Formula One race number thirteen of the 2012 season was Autodromo Nazionale Monza, near Monza, Italy. McLaren-Mercedes may have had mixed results again, but they still gained ground in the constructors' championship standings.

Here's the rundown of the top three finishers. Starting from pole position, the race winner was Lewis Hamilton (England) of the McLaren-Mercedes team. Sergio Pérez (México), driving for team Sauber-Ferrari, was second. Fernando Alonso (Spain) of Scuderia Ferrari came in third place, increasing his drivers' championship points lead from 24 to 37 points.

Race winner Hamilton and third place Alonso were taken out of the race early in Belgium, the previous week. Meanwhile, the winner of that weekend, Jenson Button (England) from McLaren-Mercedes, retired early this time.

There are review and analysis links from Formula1.com below. One highlights video, and a results video from the guys at SpeedTV.com are also included.

Italy analysis - the magicians of Monza
Posted at Formula1.com on September 10, 2012

Barely a week ago at Spa, Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso were taken out at Turn One. On Sunday at Monza, all three were on the podium after a thrilling Formula 1 Gran Premio Santander d'Italia 2012. Hamilton’s flawless drive reignited his title charge; Perez showed yet again why he’s hotly tipped as a future champion; and the ever-canny Alonso somehow extended his standings lead from tenth on the grid...

2012 F1 Belgian Grand Prix Review

Jenson Button pulls away from first turn carnage at 2012 F1 Belgian GP on Sept. 2, 2012.
Photo is from The Fast Lane Car.

The first race after the August break, the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix was held on September 2, 2012. The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Spa, Belgium was the site of the twelfth race of 2012 for Formula One racing teams.

The three drivers to finish ahead of everybody else were as follows. First was top qualifier Jenson Button (England) of McLaren-Mercedes. Then, Sebastian Vettel (Germany) of Red Bull Renault came in second. Third place was earned by Kimi_Räikkönen (Finland) from Lotus-Renault.

The race started of with a bang ... well, several bangs. There was a multi-car pile-up at the first turn, which included the retirement of Lewis Hamilton (England) from McLaren-Mercedes and points leader Fernando Alonso (Spain) of Scuderia Ferrari, among others. When the safety car left the track, Button led the rest of the way.

Formula1.com review and analysis links are below. I've also included a highlights video, and a results video from the guys at SpeedTV.com.

Belgium analysis - Spa drama helps tighten title race
Posted at Formula1.com on September 3, 2012

McLaren’s Jenson Button admits he still only has a very long shot at the 2012 drivers’ crown, but at least he has a shot after his masterful drive at Spa. Romain Grosjean’s turn-one misdemeanour, which eliminated championship leader Fernando Alonso, really mixed up the title fight. If Alonso was the biggest loser, Sebastian Vettel was arguably the biggest winner. The lap-one accident helped lift him to second in the race and second in the standings, just 24 points behind his Ferrari rival. We take a team-by-team look back at the 2012 Formula 1 Shell Belgian Grand Prix...

2012 F1 German Grand Prix Review

Formula One drivers battled it out at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg (in Baden-Württemberg), near Hockenheim, Germany, in the 2012 German Grand Prix on July 22, 2012.

The tenth race of the 2012 season featured a few gearbox and impediment penalties, as well as pre-race driver changes.

Having started the race at pole posistion, Fernando Alonso (Spain) of Scuderia Ferrari went on to win this race. In second place, was McLaren-Mercedes driver Jenson Button (England). Kimi Räikkönen (Finland), of Lotus-Renault, was on the podium again, with third place.

Button, coming in second, obviously did very well for McLaren. His teammate however, Lewis Hamilton (England), was the only driver to retire early. It seems a tire puncture led to suspension damage sufficient to eventually take him out of his 100th grand prix.

Post-race links from Formula1.com, and related videos, wrap up this review.

Race - masterful Alonso triumphs at Hockenheim
Posted at Formula1.com on July 22, 2012

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso drove an absolutely faultless race in Germany on Sunday afternoon to become the first three-time winner of 2012. Alonso was under consistent pressure, first from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and later from McLaren’s Jenson Button, both of whom got within less than a second of the Ferrari at times. But the Spaniard never put a wheel wrong nor lost his nerve and pulled away in the closing stages as Button faded and was repassed by Vettel...

Germany analysis - Alonso hits his stride
Posted at Formula1.com on July 23, 2012

No one is any longer kidding themselves that Ferrari don’t have a good car, but it’s still far from being the best car. What Ferrari do have is a double world champion seemingly at the very peak of his driving powers. Fernando Alonso displayed that to full effect at Hockenheim on Sunday as he kept the hard-charging Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button at bay to clinch his third win of 2012 and go 34 points clear at the top of the standings. We look back, team by team, on a fascinating German Grand Prix...

Race seven of the 2012 Formula One Season, the 2012 Canadian Grand Prix, happened on June 10, 2012 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

At this point on the race calendar, we were still taking turns getting to the finish line first. It was Lewis Hamilton's (England) turn to win a 2012 Formula One Grand Prix race, in his McLaren - Mercedes. Romain Grosjean (Switzerland born / France nationality) of Lotus - Renault was second, while Sauber - Ferrari driver Sergio Pérez (México) was the third place finisher.

The 2012 F1 Spanish Grand Prix was run on May 13, 2012 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló, near Barcelona, Spain. It was the fifth race of the 2012 season of Formula One racing.

The fifth different driver was victorious, making this a very interesting season, so far. It was Pastor Maldonado, the first Venezuelan ever to win a Formula One Grand Prix race, in his Williams - Renault car claiming first place. In second was Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Scuderia Ferrari, followed by Finnish Lotus - Renault driver Kimi Räikkönen in third.

The main Formula1.com post-race recap is linked below, and some video is also provided for you in this abbreviated review.

2012 F1 Chinese Grand Prix Review

The 2012 Chinese Grand Prix, round three of the 2012 Formula One Season, took place at the Shanghai International Circuit in Shanghai, China on April 15, 2012.

German driver Nico Rosberg (Mercedes-Benz) dominated in this race, gaining his first win in Formula One racing. He did it after having also earned his very first pole position, a fairly rare combination.

Engine manufacturer Mercedes-Benz must have been very pleased on this day as McLaren Mercedes, the other F1 Merc team, took the other two podium spots. Jenson Button came in second, and Lewis Hamilton was third, both being from England.

Here are some related links from Formula1.com and a couple videos for you as a review of this event.

Qualifying - rampaging Rosberg takes maiden F1 pole
Posted at Formula1.com on April 14, 2012

Mercedes' innovative front wing helped Nico Rosberg to the first pole position of his Formula One career on Saturday afternoon in Shanghai, when a mighty lap of 1m 35.121s left him well clear of Lewis Hamilton's McLaren and Michael Schumacher's sister car, with respective laps of 1m 35.626s and 1m 35.691s. But Hamilton's five-place grid penalty makes it the first all-Mercedes front row since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix at Monza...

China analysis - Mercedes make the breakthrough
Posted at Formula1.com on April 16, 2012

When Mercedes took over Brawn - then reigning champions - ahead of the 2010 season, they probably didn't expect to have to wait quite so long for a win. The waiting at last paid off on Sunday, as Nico Rosberg finally scored the victory everyone knew he was capable of. More encouraging still for Ross Brawn's squad, the nature of his triumph suggested that in their innovative W03 car, they may now have a genuine title contender...

Ask a Formula One driver to name his favourite tracks and chances are Suzuka will get more mentions than almost any other circuit. And with Japan still recovering from a devastating earthquake and tsunami earlier this year, the teams are especially eager to return and show their support...

Review: 'Doctor Who' - 'Closing Time': Partners in parenting
By Alan Sepinwall at What's Alan Watching? via HitFix.com

At first, I took "Closing Time" to be a light-hearted one-off before the fireworks and tears that will presumably be coming with next week's season finale. After all, it reunited the Doctor with Craig, his goofy flamate from last season's "The Lodger", had a lot of jokes about the Doctor speaking baby, the Doctor getting a job in a department store, and his new co-workers assuming that the Doctor and Craig were a gay couple...

Blackhawks 3, Capitals 2
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Aiming for their first pre-season victory in three bids, the Washington Capitals nursed a 1-0 lead into the third period of Friday’s game against the Blackhawks in Chicago. The Caps were somewhat fortunate to have that lead; they followed up a strong first frame in which they forged that 1-0 lead with a sluggish second. Washington went without a shot on goal for the first 10 minutes of the second and it took Tomas Vokoun’s strong netminding to hold the Caps’ slim lead heading into the final 20 minutes...

Review: NBC's 'Prime Suspect'
By Alan Sepinwall at What's Alan Watching? via HitFix.com

...by far the biggest problem in this pilot was the almost cartoonish degree of sexism that Timoney faces. "Prime Suspect" is based on the groundbreaking '90s British drama of the same name, which starred the great Helen Mirren. And as Cunningham says, sexism at the workplace has evolved significantly (if not disappeared) in the 20 or so years since Mirren first put on the badge, and the disgust that the American "Prime Suspect" men show for their Jane could just as easily come from her abrasive personality as from their lack of desire to let an icky girl into their private club. There's an obvious flaw in the pilot, and it's one that Cunningham, director Peter Berg ("Friday Night Lights") and company have recognized and promised to fix moving forward...

*Dan, Jr. / Junior's Eyes Note: The first episode is absolute garbage. The biggest problem is actually that the people running the American remake think that New York is the center of the universe, and that overusing New York stereotypes makes the show more edgy and cool. Helen Mirren played Jane Tennison as a strong women. In this version, they try to make the lead female character (Jane Timoney) a "street tough" man.

Brazil analysis - Vettel in control of title destiny?
Posted at Formula1.com on November 8, 2010

The Brazilian Grand Prix set up the first four-way championship fight climax in the sport's history, as the Formula One paddock heads to Abu Dhabi this week. Sebastian Vettel took the Interlagos win he needed, but an equally dominant performance from the German at Yas Marina could in theory prevent Red Bull adding the drivers' championship to their 2010 constructors' crown...

Posted at Formula1.com on October 23, 2010

All five title challengers have enjoyed strong performances on the demanding Korean circuit, but during qualifying it was Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel who emerged on pole position. With Mark Webber alongside him on the front row, Red Bull seem to hold the advantage, but Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button aren't ready to throw in the towel just yet. We take a team-by-team look...

Race - Alonso wins in Korea, double DNF for Red Bull
Posted at Formula1.com on October 24, 2010

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso scored one of the biggest wins of his career in a rain-affected Korean Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon, and a day of total disaster saw neither Red Bull driver finish. Mark Webber crashed out early while running second, and Sebastian Vettel's engine blew up as he was leading on the 46th lap...

Korea analysis - Alonso back in the driving seat
Posted at Formula1.com on October 25, 2010

A couple of months back many had ruled him out of the title fight. Fernando Alonso maintained he could still do it and after his faultless drive to the top of the table in Korea - his third win in four races - his doubters are now eating their words. The Spaniard's brilliance in Yeongam's testing conditions, combined with a disastrous day for Red Bull, means that with just two rounds to go he heads the standings by 11 points...

After Saturday's qualifying session for the Japanese Grand Prix was postponed thanks to heavy rain at Suzuka, the drivers finally had a chance to stake their claim on the grid on Sunday morning, ahead of the afternoon race. With Ferrari's Felipe Massa failing to make it through to Q3 and the Red Bull duo of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber looking ominously dominant, there was plenty to talk about. The drivers, and senior team personnel, review Sunday's qualifying action...

Qualifying analysis - Red Bull to rule at Suzuka?
Posted at Formula1.com on October 10, 2010

It may have been unusually timed - Sunday morning, instead of rain-hit Saturday - but qualifying in Japan was business as usual for Red Bull, with polesitter Sebastian Vettel and team mate Mark Webber locking out the front row of the grid. Renault's Robert Kubica could be a fly in the ointment in third, whilst Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, and McLaren's Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will be gunning for the podium. We take a team-by-team look at qualifying at Suzuka...

As expected, nobody could hold a candle to the Red Bulls in Suzuka on Sunday afternoon as Sebastian Vettel led home team mate Mark Webber by nine-tenths of a second in a gripping race in which the five title contenders finished in the top five places. Vettel's third triumph of the season, and Fernando Alonso's third place for Ferrari, 1.8s behind Webber, moves the German into joint second place with the Spaniard, each on 206 points, as Webber moved out to 220 to extend his lead to 14...

Japan analysis - victorious Vettel back in title race

Sebastian Vettel has come in for his fair share of criticism this season, but in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix the Red Bull driver was untouchable as he delivered the win he needed to stay in title contention. With neither McLaren making the Suzuka podium - and with just three rounds remaining - it's looking increasingly like a three-way showdown for the drivers' championship...

Q: Lewis, brilliant win but not without its nervy moments.
Lewis Hamilton: No. It was a great weekend. Very, very tough race for me. I think same for everyone but praying just for a race that went smoothly. But with the tricky conditions when it started to rain, losing temperature in the tyres and not really knowing how much you can push in each corner...

Belgium analysis - McLaren strike back at Spa
Posted at Formula1.com on August 30, 2010

Spa was never going to be Red Bull’s favourite circuit, but after clinching their 12th pole of the season on Saturday, things were looking pretty good. That was before Mark Webber's slow start, sporadic showers, a collision between Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button and two safety-car periods intervened. Amidst all the drama it was McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who kept his head to secure his first win since June - and the lead in the drivers' championship. And with McLaren just one point adrift of Red Bull in the constructors' table, the stage is set for a battle royal at the remaining six rounds. We take a team-by-team look at how a memorable Belgian race played out...

Qualifying analysis - relentless Red Bull unbeatable in Budapest?
Posted at Formula1.com on July 31, 2010

Nobody could hold a candle to Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel on Saturday in Hungary - not even team mate Mark Webber, who took a distant second to the German’s dominant pole time. Together the duo look pretty invincible for Sunday’s race, but there’s no doubt Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa in third and fourth, and fifth-placed McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton will do all they can to stop Red Bull having it all their own way in Budapest. We take a team-by-team look at the pre-race form...

Sebastian Vettel Q&A: A perfect lap - now I need a perfect start!
Posted at Formula1.com on August 1, 2010

Having just taken his fourth pole position in a row, there is no doubting Sebastian Vettel’s one-lap performance. While it’s true that he’s found it more difficult to convert those front-row starts into race wins, Vettel is confident that should all change in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Considering the lead he had on Saturday over his team mate Mark Webber and the two Ferraris, few would disagree...

Mark Webber turned the Hungarian Grand Prix into a nail-biting gripper when a safety-car intervention on the 15th lap upset the form that Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel had established from the start.

The German sprinted into the lead from pole position, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso bulling up to snatch second from Webber as Felipe Massa in the second scarlet car just held off Renault’s Vitaly Petrov and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton...

Q: Mark, a commanding win by the end of 70 laps. But it was probably the 43 you managed in your first stint that really set it up.
Mark Webber: Yeah, that’s right. The start we always knew was going to be a little bit tricky on that side. Fernando got a good start. Seb’s was pretty good as well. But we all jumped into the slipstream in the run to the first corner...

Mark Webber Q&A: A nice way to celebrate my 150th!

Red Bull’s Mark Webber is looking forward to some relaxation in Formula One’s traditional summer break, spending some time with his dogs and avoiding planes and hotel rooms. Hungary race analysis - everything to play for
Posted at Formula1.com on August 2, 2010

The Hungarian Grand Prix not only put a victorious Mark Webber firmly back in the championship race, it left fans with the tantalising prospect of a genuine five-way fight for the title over the season’s final seven rounds, with just 20 points covering the leading contenders. Red Bull’s prodigious pace in Budapest might lead you to believe they are now favourites, but the RB6 is unlikely to be so perfectly suited to the remaining circuits as it was to the Hungaroring. We take a team-by-team look at Sunday’s form...

Disappointment was written all over Sebastian Vettel’s face as he received his third place trophy on the Budapest podium. It should have been his race, but the Red Bull driver could not reap the rewards from his prior dominance of the weekend. He may have been angry at the time, but Vettel is not one to dwell on what might have been, and after a few days relaxing at home he’ll be concentrating on Spa...
