Today's Tune: "Murders In The Rue Morgue"
By Iron Maiden

American writer Edgar Allan Poe (Born January 19, 1809 – Died October 7, 1849) died on this day in 1849, at the age of 40 years old. His styles and genres of writing included poetry, mysteries, horror and detective stories (Invented ?). Poe is best known for his dark scary tales and poems, many of which have been adapted into horror films, such as "The Masque Of The Red Death" , "The Pit And The Pendulum" and "The Raven" . All types of his works have been an influence on some of the great writers since his time, but he lived in modest means during his short lifetime.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but lived in many different places. Most of those areas have some sort of museum or landmark in his honor, and several held special events on this, the 40th anniversary of his death.

In Baltimore, MD, where he died after a long period of very poor health and is buried, they finally gave him a "proper funeral". For a fiver, you got to visit his very small former home (museum now) and pay your respects while viewing his "body" (manikin). I imagine it would be about as disappointing an experience for me as when I visited the Sherlock Holmes house in London, England many years ago. I didn't go thousands of miles just for that, but there are people who spanned the globe just to visit Poe House today. Most will probably enjoy it. To see a local news report, click here.

In remembrance of Mr. Poe, I picked a song for the 'Today's Tune' that carries a title similar to his famous story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" . Released in 1981, here's Iron Maiden with "Murders In The Rue Morgue".

Today's Tune: "Another World" By Brian May

October 1st is an anniversary date for a couple major events in the history of Disney World, in Orlando, Florida, USA. The most popular amusement/theme park (Actually 4 theme parks and two water parks) and resort on the planet, Walt Disney's Disney World first opened to the public on October 1, 1971. The 1st of October became an important date again, when the Epcot theme park (Originally called EPCOT Center) area opened up on this day in 1982.

At the age of nine, I was lucky enough to visit the "Magic Kingdom" with my parents and two sisters a couple months after it opened up, during the Christmas holiday in December of 1971. I didn't make it back until I was grown up (At least physically) and had a daughter of my own. We were there to welcome the new Millennium. Now that was a special time. We of course spent time at Epcot during our stay, and it became my favorite place in Disney. It does give you enough atmosphere to almost make you feel like you are in the other countries that are represented there, even if you've actually been to those places before.

For this 'Today's Tune', we aren't going to match exactly the happy and playful feelings that would directly relate to memories of the subject matter above. We will have a song title that somewhat links to it though. I offer to you today, a song from within the solo works of Queen guitarist and songwriter Brian May. The tune is called "Another World".

I Like A Laugh - Travel Log Part 2

My travel agent sent me another video to help me decide where to go on holiday. It's another slide show type video. This one is supposed to include pictures of her last couple trips. She said she threw this together in a hurry, and that maybe I shouldn't show this to everybody. Well, I don't think everybody reads this blog. Almost nobody, in fact. So, here it is.

I'm wondering if she sent the right one. Some of these pictures are a little disturbing. I'm not quite sure what she has on her mind. I'm not quite sure that I even want to find out.

I Like A Laugh - Travel Log Part 1

I've been thinking about where I'd like to go on my next vacation. It's been very hard to make up my mind. For one thing, I'm just incredibly indecisive. Also, I don't get a chance to go away very often. So, I'd like this trip to be really special. I asked my travel agent to send me a couple videos, to help me decide. Here's one she thought would be helpful.

.

The first video she sent, shows the unique things about some of the places I said I was considering.

Yeah, well......I'm not sure yet.
