2012 WRC Wales Rally GB Review

Jari-Matti Latvala driving in 2012 Wales Rally GB. Photo via WalesRallyGB.com.

The tenth rally of the 2012 season of WRC was run from September 13 through September 16, 2012. For the most part, it was done on a gravel surface, but some of the sections were also on asphalt. Base camp for Wales Rally GB was Cardiff, Wales.

In the end, these were the drivers finishing in the top three: Jari-Matti Latvala (Finland) from factory Ford World Rally Team was the overall victor, Sébastien Loeb (France) of Citroën Total World Rally Team ended up second, and Petter Solberg (Norway) from factory Ford World Rally Team took third place points.

WRC.com rally recaps, and four extensive and informative review videos are included below.

Sunday wrap: Latvala returns to winning ways in Wales
Posted at WRC.com on September 16, 2012

Jari-Matti Latvala has done something he hadn't managed for 217 days when he claimed victory on Wales Rally GB this afternoon, his first in the FIA World Rally Championship since Rally Sweden seven months and four days ago...

The wrc.com review: Wales Rally GB
Posted at WRC.com on September 17, 2012

The agonising thing for Ford on Wales Rally GB was not just that it was the first factory win for 217 days, but also that it came frustratingly close to being a perfect one-two: a result that has eluded the works squad since Rally Australia one year ago...

2012 F1 British Grand Prix Review

It was on July 8, 2012, when Formula One race drivers lapped around the Silverstone Circuit of Northamptonshire, England, for the 2012 British Grand Prix. The ninth race of the season, which involved more movement in the drivers and the constructors points order positions, showed that 2012 has become one of the more exciting seasons in a long time.

Mark Webber (Australia), of Red Bull Renault, won the race. He was followed by Scuderia Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso (Spain) in second, and third place finisher Sebastian Vettel (Germany), of Red Bull Renault.

Below are related links from Formula1.com and some video, so we can review this race.

Race - Webber beats Alonso to Silverstone win
Posted at Formula1.com on July 8, 2012

For so many laps on Sunday at Silverstone it seemed that Fernando Alonso was set to repeat his historic 2011 British victory for Ferrari, until Red Bull’s Mark Webber was able to turn the tables dramatically with just five laps remaining...

Great Britain analysis - Webber plays it to perfection
Posted at Formula1.com on July 8, 2012

The sun finally shone on Silverstone on Sunday, as it served up a highly entertaining Grand Prix. Pre-race predictions of a Ferrari-Red Bull showdown proved correct, but it was the latter’s Mark Webber who made all the right moves. The Australian hunted down and passed polesitter Fernando Alonso in the closing laps, narrowing the gap between them at the top of the driver standings to just 13 points, as the season nears its halfway point. We look back, team-by-team, on an enthralling 52 laps...

CR AWARDS: Queen
By gbarton at Classic Rock

Queen won the Best Reissue Of The Year Award – come inside for exclusive chinwags with none other than guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor...

...Do you have any theories about why those old Queen albums are still so popular?

Taylor: That’s such a difficult question to answer, there were so many great bands that didn’t last the way we have. We definitely put our hearts into what we did back then. It was beautifully crafted; Freddie and Brian were always utter perfectionists.

May: We were also very competitive at the beginning, and that contributed to our high standards. Being so critical of each other definitely helped to raise the bar. We could all be self-indulgent, but between the four of us we managed to stop that.

Are the newspaper rumours true, is Lady Gaga going to join Queen?

Taylor: No. Even though she nicked the name [from Radio GaGa].

May: It’ll never happen.

Last year the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix saw Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel snatch the world championship crown from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and his own team mate Mark Webber, but the dearth of overtaking played a key role in the final outcome. Racing against the clock - 2011 pit stops analysed
Posted at Formula1.com

The combination of DRS and Pirelli tyres has made 2011 a bumper year for the sport, but not just in terms of on-track passing manoeuvres. The characteristics of the Pirelli tyres, designed to improve the racing, have also seen the total number of pit stops rise steeply - so far, there have been an average of 58 stops per race. Slick pit work has always been important in Formula One racing, but the frequency with which the pit crews have been in action this year has brought both speed and consistency to the fore. POSTGAME NOTEBOOK: Islanders 5, Capitals 3
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Caps Can’t KO DiPietro – Through the game’s first 20 minutes, Washington had the homestanding New York Islanders right where they wanted them. The Caps owned a 2-0 lead, Isles goaltender Rick DiPietro looked shaky to the point that the fans were chanting for back-up Al Montoya as the clock wound down in the first frame, and the offensively challenged Islanders were up to more than 100 minutes since they scored their last goal...

Review: All-star cast shines in 'Masterpiece' film 'Page Eight'
By Alan Sepinwall at What's Alan Watching? via HitFix.com

..."Page Eight" was written and directed by David Hare, who wrote the scripts for "The Reader" and "The Hours" but is a playwright by trade. And there's a very stage-like quality to the film, much of it consisting of Johnny sitting in conference rooms and drawing rooms discussing his life, his legacy and the current state of British intelligence with friends and colleagues, most of them played by a murderer's row of British (and/or Australian) character actors. In addition to Bill Nighy as Johnny, we have Michael Gambon as Benedict, Judy Davis as their colleague Jill, Rachel Weisz as Johnny's inquisitive neighbor Nancy, Ralph Fiennes as the British prime minister, Alice Krige as one of Johnny's many ex-wives and Felicity Jones as their estranged daughter...

2010 WRC Wales Rally GB Review

Sébastien Loeb at 2010 Wales Rally GB. Photo Copyright © Motorsport.com .

2010 Wales Rally Great Britain, the final round of the 2010 World Rally Championship Season (38th), was based in Cardiff, the capital city of host country Wales. Including pre-rally activities for Great Britain, it was held from November 11 (Thursday) through November 14 (Sunday), 2010. French Citroën World Rally Team driver Sébastien Loeb, already champion of the season, won the last WRC rally of the year.

Norwegian Citroën privateer Petter Solberg, the driver with the best chance of beating Loeb here, finished 20 seconds slower for second place. Third overall went to Finnish driver Jari-Matti Latvala. Round thirteen put a wrap on the season.

Here is a collection links (main WRC category only), starting off with one scene setting preview, followed by rally review posts that include daily podcasts, and ending with a highlights video. Preview posts can be found within Junior's last couple regular 'Reading And Viewing List' blog posts.

Countdown to Wales Rally GB
Posted at WRC.com on November 5, 2010

...Another constant are the classic gravel roads found north of Roald Dahl Plass. People talk about Finland and New Zealand being great, fast rallies - well Wales Rally GB is right up there with them. And this year’s event is going to be an even bigger challenge with some of the trickiest asphalt around being slotted into Saturday’s stages on the Epynt military ranges.

But, for the mainstay, this event is about the woods; it has been for the last half-century. It was 1960 when then clerk of the course Jack Kemsley decided to give the RAC Rally some teeth...

Ogier fastest at Wales Rally GB shakedown
Posted at WRC.com on November 11, 2010

...The three hour test - a prelude to this weekend’s rally - took place a day earlier and at a different location than originally scheduled after a tree disease in Margam Forest forced organisers to abandon Thursday’s planned stage at Margam Park.

Instead the test took place on the 1.7km asphalt Superspecial constructed on the Barrage in Cardiff Bay, a stone’s throw from the Service Park. Weather conditions were dry and chilly as the night time session got underway at 1900hrs in a temperature of just three degrees Celsius...

Saturday morning the key, say WRC drivers
Posted at WRC.com on November 11, 2010

...“Where it goes to asphalt, it’s going to be very, very slippery,” said Ford’s Jari-Matti Latvala. “It’s going to be a question of trying to stay on the road. If it’s foggy it’s going to be really difficult, also because the organisers have placed some blocks near the corners to stop people from cutting the corners. I can see a few people running into those...

Friday wrap: Loeb heads close fight for Rally GB win
Posted at WRC.com on November 12, 2010

...Citroen C4 driver Loeb started Friday’s opening stage, the 32.14-kilometre charge through Hafren Forest, with a lead of 0.7s over Jari-Matti Latvala following his fastest time through Thursday night’s Cardiff Bay stage.

Despite a wild moment when he ran wide on a corner, Latvala went quickest in his factory Ford Focus to take a slender one-second lead. Although he slipped back when his car’s engine ingested water going through the second splash in Sweet Lamb and stuttered momentarily (click here to see the incident), a determined run through Myherin meant he stopped the clocks 3.2s faster than Loeb to go back in front of the Frenchman in the overall standings at the midway point...

WRC wrap: Loeb leads - just - after epic battle in Wales
Posted at WRC.com on November 13, 2010

...Solberg had no answer to Loeb - who was running first on the road - on the 11.15 kilometres of asphalt on the Four Ways Crychan stage and claimed that his rival had taken excessive ‘cuts’ through corners to drag mud and other debris onto the sealed stage surface to impede him.

Loeb, who won the stage by 6.4s to go 5.3s ahead of Solberg, brushed off the suggestion when quizzed at the remote service halt at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, where he reported overshooting a junction and stalling his engine on stage nine, before spinning on stage 11, which Solberg won to narrow Loeb’s advantage to 2.5s...

...Even seven-time World Champion Sebastien Loeb, a man who has more or less seen it all, said that it was the longest and the tightest battle that he had experienced all year. A Defenseman Grows Up
By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

Mike Green is an “offensive” defenseman. These days, that is a term that seems to question one’s manhood as much as it identifies a defenseman’s style of play. As in, “Green doesn’t play defense.”

It is the narrative theme that probably cost Green a Norris Trophy in each of the last two seasons, his brand of play being less rugged and less “two-way” than the voting media seemed to want in their defensemen nowadays...
