Toaday's Tune: "Sunday Bloody Sunday" By U2

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is our 'Today's Tune', in rememberance of the events that occurred in Derry (a.k.a. Londonderry), Northern Ireland on January 30, 1972, during what is refferred to as 'The Troubles'. That January 30th is known as 'Bloody Sunday', for unforgettable and tragic reasons.

Intoduction on Wikipedia's 'Bloody Sunday' (1972) page:

Bloody Sunday (Irish: Domhnach na Fola)[1]—sometimes called the Bogside Massacre[2]—was an incident on 30 January 1972 in the Bogside area of Derry,[3] Northern Ireland. Twenty-seven civil rights protesters were shot by the British Army Parachute Regiment during a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march.[4] Thirteen people, seven of whom were teenagers, died immediately, while the death of another person 4½ months later has been attributed to the injuries he received on the day. Two protesters were injured when they were run down by army vehicles.[5] Many witnesses, including bystanders and journalists, testify that all those shot were unarmed. Five of those wounded were shot in the back.[6]

Two investigations have been held by the British Government. The Widgery Tribunal, held in the immediate aftermath of the event, largely cleared the soldiers and British authorities of blame — Widgery described the soldiers' shooting as "bordering on the reckless" — but was criticised by many as a "whitewash"[7][8][9] including by former chief of staff to Tony Blair, Jonathan Powell.[10] The Saville Inquiry, established in 1998 to look at the events again (chaired by Lord Saville of Newdigate), was expected to report in late 2009 but has now been delayed until March 2010[11].

The Provisional Irish Republican Army's (IRA) campaign against the partition of Ireland had begun in the two years prior to Bloody Sunday, but perceptions of the day boosted the status of and recruitment into the organisation enormously.[12] Bloody Sunday remains among the most significant events in the Troubles of Northern Ireland, chiefly due to the fact that it was carried out by the army and not paramilitaries, and in full public and press view.[2]...

This is a part of Irish history that has been chronicled and and rightfully made unforgettable through varius mediums, including song and film. The most memorable film made about it is the 2002 television film, 'Bloody Sunday'.

Content, Casting and Production from Wikipedia's 'Bloody Sunday' (TV Film) page:

Content

The drama shows the events of the day through the eyes of Ivan Cooper, the Protestant Stormont Member of Parliament (for the Social Democratic and Labour Party) who was a central organiser of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march in Derry on 30 January 1972. The march ended when British paratroopers fired on the demonstrators, killing thirteen instantly and wounding another thirteen, one of whom died 4½ months later from injuries he received on that day.

The soundtrack contains only one piece of music, a live version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2 which plays over the closing credits.

Casting & Production

Cooper is played by James Nesbitt, himself a Protestant from Northern Ireland, and a number of the military characters were played by ex-members of the British army. Gerry Donaghy was played by Declan Duddy, nephew of Jackie Duddy, one of those killed on Bloody Sunday. Big Brother 2007 (UK) housemate Seány O'Kane was in the film as well.[1]...

Beninati: Win Streak Continues
By Joe Beninati - Capitals Play-By-Play at CSN - Washington, DC

For the first 45 minutes on the air tonight, I was getting the feeling that the Caps long win streak was going to be in jeopardy. The Panthers executed their game plan very well, and the home team was not as crisp as we’ve seen them recently. Even with a one-goal lead early, the Caps were giving up quality chances by the bushel, and thankfully, Michal Neuvirth bailed them out...

"The Raven" - Read By Vincent Price
And Christopher Walken

The first publication of "The Raven", including credit given to it's American author Edgar Allan Poe, was in the January 29, 1845 edition of The Evening Mirror (New York, NY - USA). "The Raven" is a narrative poem, which involves a lover lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore.

Below, you'll find two videos with readings of the famous and mysterious poem. Though these talented American actors have somewhat differing styles in their performances, both Vincent Price and Christopher Walken kept the creepy atmos percolating throughout.

Today's Tune: "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas

On January 29, 1861, Kansas was admiitted into the Union, becoming the 34th state in the USA. Therfore, I've chosen a song from the classic rock style band Kansas for this 'Today's Tune'.

"Carry On Wayward Son" was originally released on the 1976 album, 'Leftoverture'. It was also sold as a single in '76, and became one of the band's biggest selling singles ever.

Today's Tune: "45" By Elvis Costello

The musical genius known as Elvis Costello.

Happy Birthday Alan Cumming! Scottish stage, television and film actor Cumming was born in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland on January 27, 1965. The activist and humanitarian is in very high demand these days. You see him regularly in films and a fair amount on television (PBS / Masterpiece presenter).

When I think of Alan Cumming, I remember his work in movies such as 'Bernard And The Genie' (Won British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Newcomer), 'Spy Kids' ('Spy Kids' trilogy), and 'X2: X-Men United' ('X-Men' film series). And who could forget him as Wyatt Frame, also known as "White Ass Wally", in 'Josie And The Pussycats'.

Cumming was born in 1965, which makes him 45 years old today. So, for our 'Today's Tune', the obvious choice is "45" (2002). It's a great piece of work, about all things 45, by a musical genius born in England of Irish heritage, Elvis Costello. Costello was 45 years old when he wrote the song.

Scorpions To Retire After New Album
And Long World Tour

World Tour 2009 - Gdansk, Poland fan photo from Scorpions photo gallery.

Yes, it is rather sad news. Scorpions, one of the best and most memorable rock bands, will soon be no more. The German bad boys, a fantastic group of lovely and lively guys, are to retire.

They will do so after a huge world tour in support of their new album, 'Sting In The Tail' (Due out March 19, 2010). It's being called the 'Get Your Sting And Blackout World Tour 2010 / 2011', but it will probably go on into at least 2012. The tour starts in March, and then leads them across the globe over the next few years. Visit the band's Tour Page for updates. These lads put on amazing live shows, so go see them in concert, when they come around your area for the last time. See the note posted to their web site below.

Important Message to our Fans

posted on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 3:13:36 AM

It was always our pleasure, our purpose in life, our passion and we were fortunate enough to make music for you - whether it was live on stage or in the studio, creating new songs.

While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was – and how much fun we were still having, in the process. But there was also something else: We want to end the Scorpion’s extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we’ve always had since the beginning. This is why, especially now, we agree we have reached the end of the road. We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years.

We want you, our fans, to be the first to know about this. Thank you for your never-ending support throughout the years!

We uploaded the very first snippets from our new album for you.

And now... let’s get the party started and get ready for a “Sting in the Tail”!

See you on the world tour,

Yours Scorpions

Today's Tune: "Eruption" By Van Halen

Happy Birthday Eddie Van Halen! Eddie was born in The Netherlands on January 26, 1955. He and his family eventually moved to Pasadena, California in the USA, after he had reached the age of 7 years old. He is one of the greatest rock guitarists to have ever lived. Most of his rocking has been as a founding member (along with brother Alex) of the highly successful band, Van Halen.

Not to mess around, we'll get right to the 'Today's Tune'. To feature Eddie in the best way on his birthday, we have the original studio track, and also an extended live version of the famous solo guitar creation, "Eruption". The studio version was recorded in the Fall of 1977, and it was released on the band's first album on February 10, 1978.

Joan Jett Told Kristen Stewart To
"F@#k Your Guitar!"

According to a report at The Vancouver Sun, rock goddess Joan Jett had some interesting instructions for actress Kristen Stewart, who plays Jett in 'The Runaways', a movie about the band due to show in theatres on March 19, 2010. The article by Katherine Monk was posted January 25th, after the film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2010.

Monk wrote that Stewart said Joan Jett had instructed her to .... "Put your pussy to the wood! Fuck your guitar!".

The movie also stars Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford and Stella Maeve as Sandy West, the other actual band members represented in this production. Alia Shawkat plays the band's bassist Robin, a fictional character created due to legal issues preventing the portrayal of real bassist Jackie Fox.

Pittsburgh fans and Ovechkin

I think it's pretty well-documented that Caps fans have a certain fascination with Sidney Crosby, from the Pacifier handouts to the signs and jerseys to the photoshopped posters to the urinal-cake art to even more t-shirts, etc...

By The OFB Team at On Frozen Blog

In somewhat unexpected fashion, hockey sure seemed to blow up around town yesterday. Late Thursday morning Dan Steinberg began generating a great volume of great dispatches from Pittsburgh. You should read every single one of them. His Post colleague Tarik via Twitter reported never before encountering so massive a media following for a regular season hockey game. Corey Masisak was on site in the Igloo helping out Comcast...

Postgame Notebook: Capitals 6, Penguins 3
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Seventy in Fifty – It was just another regular season game in mid-January. But it was also against the defending Stanley Cup champions. And it was against the team that ousted Washington from the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring.

The Caps came to play tonight, and it showed. They came out hard and strong, and worked their way past a few speed bumps on their way to an impressive 6-3 win over the Penguins...

By Stephen Pepper at Japers' Rink

Selected by the Washington Capitals at the tail end of the 2008 draft in Ottawa (204th overall to be exact), and developing into a real agitator with leadership qualities, and a bit of a scoring touch, winger Stefan Della Rovere may have been the last of the unplucked gems that summer,...

The Bluechip Options in Net Are Numerous
By pucksandbooks at On Frozen Blog

Though unable to track down John Carlson in Hershey last weekend I managed to see Braden Holtby start both weekend home games in the Bears’ net. I’d never seen Holtby perform in person, and I was well aware of the mega-buzz he’d been generating the last two hockey seasons, and so I was thrilled at the chance to get to see him...

Theo Saves the Day as Caps Squeak Past Red Wings
By Hockey Mom at Musings Of A Hockey Mom

For the better part of last night's hockey game, the Washington Capitals got schooled by the former Stanley Cup champion Red Wings. They were outshot and outhustled, missing too many opportunities to crash the net and to clear the puck out of Jose Theodore's grill. But luckily for the home team, Theo...

A TWO-point night: Caps 3 - Red Wings 2
By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

Can you give all three stars to one guy?

Well, even if you can’t, no star in this game shined more brightly than Jose Theodore, who almost single-handedly pilfered a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings tonight that the Caps, frankly, had no business winning...

Today's Tune: "Junior's Eyes" By Black Sabbath

The 'Today's Tune' for this day is "Junior's Eyes" (1978), by the English heavy metal band Black Sabbath. There are some very big reasons for picking this song today.

I'm not going to link this song to anything of great historical importance. Posting it on this date has nothing to do with anybody's birth date. It's not because someone I admired or was interested in died on this date.

So, just what are my reasons for picking "Junior's Eyes"? Well, it's nothing Earth shattering, really.

The song title matches my blog title, and there's a good reason why. I named my blog after it. After considering many original name ideas, conjured up from words involved in my many different interests, I picked a song title that wouldn't tie me down into any one particular area of subject matter.

Also, after hunting for a good video (live action, audio only, etc.) of the track off and on since I began this blog on December 1, 2007, somebody finally posted one on YouTube recently. Yeah, I know, I should've uploaded the music myself. But, I didn't.

I've got another very good reason for picking today to feature this brilliant Sabbath tune. There wasn't enough time in my day for finding another song, with a quality linking reason for posting it.

Finally, I Love It! It's very different from earlier Black Sabbath records. It actually goes back toward their blues and jazz like roots, from before they started recording albums to be released to the masses.

Today's Tune: "Zoom Club" By Budgie

On January 21, 1976, the supersonic Concorde jet was put into service by both Great Britain and France. London, England to Bahrain and Paris, France to Rio De Jineiro, Brazil were the first routes for the speedy metal bird.

This bit of flight history makes for an easy connection to our 'Today's Tune' on this day. Welsh rock band Budgie makes an appearance with the well wishing motivator track, "Zoom Club", off the 'In For The Kill' (1974) album.
