2013 F1 Malaysian Grand Prix Review

The 2013 Formula One racing season continued on Sunday - March 24, 2013, with the running of the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix. The somewhat weird and erratic race, held at Sepang International Circuit, was the second stop on this year's schedule.

The race in Sepang started off wet, after a Spring shower, then followed by periods of very bright sunshine. The behavior and performances of some of the top drivers and their team bosses were as spotty as the driving surface.

Former Formula One champion Fernando Alonso (Spain), of Scuderia Ferrari, began at third position. His race start wasn't as normal for him as that starting position, though. His car's front wing got clipped hard straight away, and he stupidly tried to get in a lap before heading to the pit to get it replaced. This unusually daft move would cost him dearly, as the wing suddenly folded under the front wheels, taking him off the course and out of the race.

Later on, after heading into the pit area, Lewis Hamilton (England) pulled into the wrong crew space. Hamilton began driving for team Mercedes (as in car factory manufacturer Mercedes-Benz) this year, but mistakenly parked his car in the slot of his old (2007 - 2012) team, McLaren-Mercedes.

Elsewhere, team orders were (at least temporarily) ignored. Team orders are instructions to drivers from team bosses, which manipulate which driver of the particular team gets the lead. One of the drivers is told to either let his teammate pass, or to just stay behind him. Team orders are against the rules, but still happen quite often. Both Red Bull-Renault and team Mercedes, which includes the first four drivers across the finish line, were obviously (radio transmissions heard) guilty of this "strategy" during this race.

Finishing in podium positions, were: Sebastian Vettel (Germany), taking first place for Red Bull-Renault; Mark Webber (Australia), also driving for Red Bull-Renault, came in in second; Third place went to Lewis Hamilton (England), now of team Mercedes.

Race - Vettel secures controversial victory in Malaysia
Posted at Formula1.com on March 24, 2013

Sebastian Vettel led team mate Mark Webber home to what should have been a celebratory Red Bull 1-2 in Sepang on Sunday, but the success was sullied by a post-race argument between the two drivers. All through the race the radio messages between Vettel and Red Bull’s team management told as much of the story as the on-track action...

Malaysia analysis - what price Vettel's victory?
Posted at Formula1.com on March 25, 2013

Sebastian Vettel led home a commanding Red Bull 1-2 in Sunday’s 2013 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix, but rarely have television viewers witnessed such tension between a driver, his team mate and team management en route to the podium. Vettel’s controversial pass on Mark Webber, despite having been told to hold station, netted him 25 points and the championship lead. As to its impact on relationships within the team - and on the German’s reputation - only time will tell...

2013 F1 Australian Grand Prix Review

Formula One racing is back, as the 2013 Formula One season got started this past Sunday - March 17, 2013, with the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. The Albert Park area's Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, in Melbourne, Australia, was the venue for the season opener, which brought a few surprises to F1 racing experts.

Surprising to probably everyone, was the lack of safety-car involvement in an incident free grand prix. It just doesn't happen very much. If there aren't even any minor crashes, there's usually at least one mechanical failure somewhere on the track, often in a fairly precarious location.

The biggest surprise, at least for the supposed experts, was who came out on top in the end. They couldn't seem to believe who won the race, even though he had been a GP champion, not really all that long ago. Then again, maybe it was the former champ's team organization that was the real surprise. Their name hasn't been anywhere near the top of the class for several years, though they did start to get some attention last season, with this driver's return to Formula One.

The top three finishers on the day, were: 2007 season World Champion Kimi Räikkönen (Finland), driving a Lotus-Renault, won the race; Fernando Alonso (Spain), another former champion, brought his Scuderia Ferrari in second; Third best, was the top guy of the past couple years, Red Bull-Renault driver Sebastian Vettel (Germany).

Who would have thought that a guy who had 69 previous career podium finishes, and who had already won 19 races over the course of his career, could've managed it? Who would possibly imagine former champion Kimi Räikkönen could manage to win one lousy season opening race? Well, me for one. I mean, why not? It's just one freaking race, anyway. Taking time off from Formula One to try a little WRC rally driving, didn't ruin you. Go Lotus! Go Kimi Räikkönen!

The first three drivers to completely finish this race were as follows. Number one was Sebastian Vettel (Germany) of Red Bull Renault. Second through was Jenson Button (England) of McLaren-Mercedes. Fernando Alonso (Spain) from Scuderia Ferrari finished third.

Lewis Hamilton (England), in his McLaren-Mercedes, retired early yet again (gearbox). Though he's had more than his share of bad luck this year, Hamilton still held fourth place in championship driver points after this race.

Once Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren had retired on the 23rd lap with gearbox failure, Sebastian Vettel had things all his own way in a Singapore Grand Prix which went right up to its two-hour time limit and thus ran for 59 rather than the intended 61 laps. Jenson Button gave chase but never looked like taking the fight to the Red Bull, while Fernando Alonso could count himself lucky to go home with third place on a day when his Ferrari was no match for either of them...

The 2012 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 9, 2012. The course for Formula One race number thirteen of the 2012 season was Autodromo Nazionale Monza, near Monza, Italy. McLaren-Mercedes may have had mixed results again, but they still gained ground in the constructors' championship standings.

Here's the rundown of the top three finishers. Starting from pole position, the race winner was Lewis Hamilton (England) of the McLaren-Mercedes team. Sergio Pérez (México), driving for team Sauber-Ferrari, was second. Fernando Alonso (Spain) of Scuderia Ferrari came in third place, increasing his drivers' championship points lead from 24 to 37 points.

Race winner Hamilton and third place Alonso were taken out of the race early in Belgium, the previous week. Meanwhile, the winner of that weekend, Jenson Button (England) from McLaren-Mercedes, retired early this time.

2012 F1 Belgian Grand Prix Review

Photo is from The Fast Lane Car.

The first race after the August break, the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix was held on September 2, 2012. The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Spa, Belgium was the site of the twelfth race of 2012 for Formula One racing teams.

The three drivers to finish ahead of everybody else were as follows. First was top qualifier Jenson Button (England) of McLaren-Mercedes. Then, Sebastian Vettel (Germany) of Red Bull Renault came in second. Third place was earned by Kimi_Räikkönen (Finland) from Lotus-Renault.

The race started of with a bang ... well, several bangs. There was a multi-car pile-up at the first turn, which included the retirement of Lewis Hamilton (England) from McLaren-Mercedes and points leader Fernando Alonso (Spain) of Scuderia Ferrari, among others. When the safety car left the track, Button led the rest of the way.

McLaren’s Jenson Button admits he still only has a very long shot at the 2012 drivers’ crown, but at least he has a shot after his masterful drive at Spa. Romain Grosjean’s turn-one misdemeanour, which eliminated championship leader Fernando Alonso, really mixed up the title fight. If Alonso was the biggest loser, Sebastian Vettel was arguably the biggest winner. On April 22, 2012, Formula One race drivers and their crews worked the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Bahrain, for the 2012 F1 Bahrain Grand Prix. German driver Sebastian Vettel, of Red Bull Renault, got his first victory of the year. The 2010 and 2011 champion led for most of the race, after having started from pole position. Starting from the middle of the pack (11th), Kimi Räikkönen (Finland) drove his Lotus Renault past all but the race winner, on his way to second place. Räikkönen's teammate Romain Grosjean also landed on the podium for the first time this season, placing third. It was also the first career podium for the Swiss driver, who claims French nationality.

The second race of the 2012 Formula One Season, the 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix, was run on March 25, 2012. First to lap the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor, Malaysia (near Kuala Lumpur) 56 times on this rainy (51 minute delay early on) race day were Scuderia Ferrari and Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso.

Second to finish the race was Sergio Pérez (México) of Sauber Ferrari. Pérez is the first Méxican F1 driver to manage a podium result since 1971. Lewis Hamilton (England) was third to go by the checkered flag, in his McLaren Mercedes.

Nine different teams and ten drivers gained points in this race, where all but two cars finished. Although he was one of the drivers to make it all the way through, Sebastian Vettel (Germany) failed to pick up any points, for the first time in 23 races. Near the end of the race, the reigning champion shredded a tire upon colliding with another car. By the time he got back out from pitting, he had dropped from fourth to eleventh place.

Here are a batch of links (chronological order) from Formula1.com and a couple videos for reviewing this event.

Groundhog Day
By Joe Beninati (Capitals Play-by-Play) at CSN - Washington, DC

So many of these games play out in similar fashions, it’s hard to keep them separate. Stop me when you’ve heard this before...the Caps gave up the first goal...the Caps fell behind by two...the Caps rallied like crazy to come back and tie the score...only to see it end in the worst way in overtime...

The Hardest Working Man, Not on Skates (Part 1)
Posted by Andrew Tomlinson at On Frozen Blog

[OFB note: Last week HockeyWashington endured a shock and a setback with word that Caps' Media Relations Maestro Nate Ewell was leaving early next month to return to a top communications post in college hockey -- his first love. We'd been working with Nate over some months to generate a profile of his background and remarkable achievements with the Caps, foremost among them perhaps the team's virtual lock on the Dillman Award, handed out at the end of each season to the best PR team in the NHL. Hockey is ascendant in Washington in part because of the Capitals' embrace of new media, and Nate's been a central figure in building a league-best blogosphere here. No hockey blog in D.C. has benefited more from Nate's commitment and enthusiasm for new media than OFB. He will be especially missed by us. Below is the first of a two-part profile of our favorite hockey communicator.]...

Corey Masisak Bids D.C. Farewell
Posted at Japers' Rink

[Corey Masisak is now officially a New Yorker, and our collective loss is NHL.com's gain. Below are his parting words to Caps fans.]...

...I wanted to write this letter to thank all of you for being incredible throughout each of the four years that I've covered the Caps, but especially for the past year. It would have been completely understandable for fans to see that I wasn't writing as regularly as I had in the past (and when I did it was for so many different publications that it was hard to keep track) and either stop reading or at least not as frequently. The amount of support and feedback, whether it was on twitter, email or in the comments on this site, was amazing and something I'll never forget...

Recap: Canucks 4, Caps 2
By Becca H at Japers' Rink

With both teams coming off of shutout losses and both teams possessing some serious firepower (albeit somewhat dormant on the Washington side of the ledger), the expectations for this one were that it would be a great all-around game - fast-paced, stars being stars, perhaps some great goaltending to back it up...

Recap: Lightning 3, Caps 0
By Becca H at Japers' Rink

Last night the Caps rebounded from a three-goal deficit, gaining momentum as the game went on and forcing overtime before ultimately falling to the Panthers. Falling into a similar hole against the Lightning, there was no such come-from-behind magic lurking tonight, as the Caps looked flat from the start and never generated anything that looked remotely close to sustained offensive pressure...

The 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was held at Yas Marina Circuit, on Yas Island, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on November 14, 2010. It was the 19th and final round of the 2010 Formula One Season. The Driver's Championship lead changed several times heading toward the end of the season. It was finally decided for good when 23 years and four months old German Red Bull Renault driver Sebastian Vettel won the race, and became the youngest champion in Formula One history.

England's Lewis Hamilton, driving for McLaren Mercedes, finished second. Last season's champion, Lewis' English teammate Jenson Button was the third driver across the finish line.

Links to Formula1.com posts on this race, starting the day before with final practice and qualifying, and then on through to post race reactions and analysis, are in this review list. A highlights video for this final race is also included.

Preview links for this race can be found within the last couple regular 'Reading And Viewing List' blog entries here at Junior's Eyes. For more articles, visit the Formula1.com archives.

Final practice - Red Bull show their hand
Posted at Formula1.com on November 13, 2010

As many of their rivals suspected they would, Red Bull found a little bit more pace in Saturday afternoon's final practice session in Abu Dhabi, and Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber set the fastest times of the weekend. The German lapped in 1m 40.696s, and the Australian was just 0.133s adrift with 1m 40.829s...

Qualifying analysis - Webber left wounded and wondering
Posted at Formula1.com on November 13, 2010

For the four remaining title contenders, qualifying for this weekend's title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a fraught affair. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was the quickest when it counted, taking pole position for the tenth time this season, but his team mate Mark Webber seemed to crumble under the pressure, managing just fifth on the grid. In between were the Red Bull duo's remaining championship rivals McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, as well as 2009 title holder Jenson Button in the second MP4-25. The scene is thus set for a storming race. We take a team-by-team look at qualifying...

The young gun's won! Vettel's title-winning season
Posted at Formula1.com on November 14, 2010

When McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 drivers' title, his entry into the record books was made all the more special as he became the sport's youngest-ever world champion. Just two seasons later and Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel has outshone even Hamilton, clinching his maiden championship in Abu Dhabi at 23 years and four months-old - a full five months younger than Hamilton was back in '08.

It's a remarkable achievement, made even more remarkable because up until the Yas Marina race there were still four drivers in with a shout at the drivers' crown. And not just any drivers - Hamilton, two-time champion Fernando Alonso and Vettel's own team mate Mark Webber. To take a title at such a young age is an accomplishment, but to beat drivers of such calibre is a feat indeed...

Abu Dhabi analysis - champion Vettel's perfect timing
Posted at Formula1.com on November 15, 2010

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel led the driver standings just once during the 2010 season - at the very end. And while the German timed things to perfection with his faultless drive to victory at Yas Marina, his title rivals did quite the opposite. Both Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull's Mark Webber were rendered powerless to challenge Vettel after premature tyre stops dropped them behind the perfectly driven Renault of Vitaly Petrov...
