Atreyu-ocious
By Jeff Hickmott at The World Of Jeff

As you all know by now, I am the sort of person that likes most types of music. I listen to a lot of music of different styles and genres, and it pains me immensely to complain about music, because the last thing I want to happen is to be labelled an old fart. But now I throw in the towel. Go ahead. Call me a geezer. The Sultan of Geez. The Geezmeister.

Why is this, Jeff? I hear you cry in dismay. Because I am officially confused. I can't deal with all the different subgenres and subgenres of subgenres of metal. Can't deal with it...

Postgame Notebook: Capitals 7, Devils 2
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Where The Devil Don't Stay – After admitting they had been outworked by an upstart Thrashers team in a 4-2 loss in Atlanta on Friday, the Capitals found themselves on the short end of a 2-1 count after the first 20 minutes of play in Saturday’s home opener against the Devils. As was often the case with the four goals against in Friday’s game, defensive-zone sloppiness was responsible for the first two New Jersey tallies on Saturday...

Postgame Notebook: Thrashers 4, Capitals 2
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

Déjà Vu All Over Again – Two years ago, a strong Washington team rolled into Atlanta for its season opener and was humbled in a decisive 7-4 loss to the Thrashers, playing in their first game under a new coach. Tonight, the Caps got their 2010-11 season off to an inauspicious start with a 4-2 setback at the hands of the Thrashers in Atlanta. It was the first game for Craig Ramsay as Atlanta’s bench boss...

Friday analysis - the calm before the storm?
Posted at Formula1.com

A track that was still relatively green, and a drop in its temperature in the second session, gave teams plenty to think about on the first day of practice for the Japanese Grand Prix. Red Bull team mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber came out on top, but Renault's Robert Kubica displayed some impressive speed behind the RB6s. However, with the weather forecast suggesting that heavy rain might enliven proceedings on Saturday, there's still everything to play for. We take a team-by-team look at the early progress at Suzuka...

Mark Webber Q&A: I am the title leader, but I'm not the favourite

In comparison to his title rivals, at 34 years-old Red Bull's Mark Webber is the 'old man' of this year's championship fight. But with age comes experience, and the relaxed way in which Webber is wandering around the Suzuka paddock ahead of Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix suggests his maturity could make the difference...

2010-2011 Previews: Forwards -- David Steckel
By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

On a team that has offense in spades, the Caps are a club that is perceived as being somewhat lacking in the defensive arts. That notion seems to apply to forwards as well as defensemen. And that brings us to David Steckel...

Chris Clark: 'It's been a different year'
By Tarik El-Bashir at Capitals Insider

Since being traded to the Blue Jackets on Dec. 28, Chris Clark has been looking forward to Saturday's game. Unfortunately for him, the only contact he'll make with Alex Ovechkin and Co. is when they shake hands outside the dressing rooms at Nationwide Arena.

That's because Clark suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee earlier this week and he'll be sidelined for the remainder of the season. The injury was the latest blow in a difficult year for the former Caps captain, who told me moments ago that he was stunned by the trade but has moved on....

The new season of "Doctor Who" kicks off this weekend across the pond, but if you're anything like me, you'll find a way to be watching when the series' new duo debuts on both BBC One this Saturday and BBC America two weeks later.

While "Doctor Who" has a long history in comics, it also occupies the top spot in my personal hierarchy of geekery (yes, even above comics) — which is why I jumped at the chance to interview the series' award-winning lead writer and new showrunner, Steven Moffat, ahead of this weekend's UK premiere. About Last Night: A Young Gun Takes Head-Hunting Punishment, Refs Hardly Care
By The OFB Team at On Frozen Blog

Aesthetically, it wasn’t pretty last night, and Atlanta played a playoff-style road game — meaning, they were more than content to keep it choppy and ugly — but the Capitals remained patient, received solid if unspectacular netminding from Semyon Varlamov, and eventually wore the Thrashers down enough to get them to succumb. It seemed perfectly scripted that Matt Bradley would provide the game-winner in such a slogging. But for us, there was one standout moment from last night, and it was uglier than the hockey itself:

If that isn’t targeting the head, what is?...

A Rough March for the Capitals' Defense
By J.P. at Japers' Rink

As you may have noticed, the Capitals haven't been quite the same juggernaut since the Olympics that the were prior to the mid-February break. They've won eight of 14 games, have allowed 2.85 goals against per game and have successfully killed off just 73.5% of their shorthanded opportunities.

To be certain, there's plenty of blame to go around, from the coaching staff on down. But when things go bad for this Caps team, eyes tend to turn to one of two places: the defense or the goaltending...

The Hershey Bears are tearing up the American Hockey League this season, leaving a trail of obliterated franchise records in their path. It seems that the boys in the Chocolate and White have no trouble vanquishing any opponent they face, but beneath the rousing success of the club lies one potential asterisk to its dominance of the AHL: Ten of the league’s 28 other teams are absent from the Bears’ schedule this season, with an entire division entirely unrepresented...

Thrashers Vs Capitals 04/05/2009 Review

Thrashers 4 - Capitals 6

In their final home game of the 2008-2009 NHL season, the Washington Capitals win combined both secondary and even strength scoring. With those features, so rare during the second half of the season, they defeated the Atlanta Thrashers and stay two points ahead (with 104 points) of the third place New Jersey Devils (102 points) in the Eastern Conference.

Tomas Fleischmann scored the first goal of the game early in the first period. Fleischman swatted down a bad clearing attempt by Atlanta's Nathan Oystrick, and sent the puck past netminder Johan Hedberg for his first ever goal against the Thrashers and his 18th of the season. Colby Armstrong answered back at 7:48 with his 20th goal of the season, getting one by goalie Jose Theodore, after Eric Fehr turned over the puck in the neutral zone.

Jim Slater put the Thrashers ahead at the beginning of the second period, while the Caps continued to play sluggishly, as they did for almost the entire first period. Just before the midpoint of the game though, they got a little boost when Keith Aucoin tipped in a cross ice pass from Alex Ovechkin, that went right through the crease to Aucoin for the back door goal. About six minutes later, Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk sent the puck over Theodore's glove side and into the net for his 42nd of the season, making the score 3-2.

By the start of the third period, Washington had gotten back into gear. They started heating it up, the red light, that is. Four of their six goals came in the final frame. The only wrinkle in the third was a clearing attempt blunder by Theo, less than a minute before the end of the game. The mistake resulted in Slava Kozlov netting the Thrashers' fourth and final goal.

The rest of the scoresheet for the third period was all Caps. Michael Nylander started the relentless assault, when he fired one in from the top of the left faceoff circle for his ninth goal of the season, and only his second at home. It was an astonishing sight, somewhat because he shot the puck toward the goal on purpose instead of passing. But the most shocking and wonderful thing to see was the rather enthusiastic celebration he exhibited right afterward. Eric Fehr battled hard to get the next one for Washington, thwarting a tripping attempt while making his way toward the net, and then getting knocked down immediately afterward. Alexander Semin put in his 31st of the season at 8:20. I can't help but wonder how many he could've had, if he were able to avoid injury this season. Brooks Laich scored the final goal of the game, with an empty netter 12.8 seconds before the final horn sounded.

The Thrashers looked like they had a good chance at taking one from the Capitals in the first half of the game, but by the third period, Washington had switched into domination mode. They really should try to play more like that for the whole 60 minutes. They can do it. I've seen it before. Focusing on what they're supposed to do, forechecking, backchecking, driving to the net, clearing the crease in front of their own goalie. They will face the Thrashers one more time, when they hit Atlanta on Tuesday.

Thrashers Vs Capitals 11/26/2008 Review

Superman Alex Ovechkin flies over Thrasher goal crease.

Thrashers 3 - Capitals 5

The Washington Capitals improved their home ice record to 8-0-1 with a win over the Atlanta Thrashers Wednesday evening, on the NHL's 91st Birthday. As of November 27, 2008, the only other team in the league to have no loses within regulation at this point in the season being the San Jose Sharks.

The Capitals managed this convincing win even though they now have eight players, seven regulars and Brian Pothier (out since last season), on the injured list. Four of those players lost after their last game, which prompted a four man call up from their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. Washington also just returned from a long, rough Western road trip. Netminder Jose Theodore and the Caps played like they were well rested while the Thrashers, who just played a game Tuesday night, looked a little sluggish at first.

Alex Ovechkin got the party started with a long range blast from the top of an umbrella formation at 3:29 into the first period, while on the first power play of the game. About four minutes later, winger Eric Fehr scored Washington's second goal at even strength, while on a 3 on 1 breakaway with Tomas Fleischmann and Michael Nylander. Atlanta's Bryan Little answered back with a PP goal at 12:08, off an Ilya Kovalchuk rebound. Down by two goals, the Thrash wouldn't get any closer than that the rest of the evening. At 14:01, Ovechkin scored another Capitals' PPG. As with his first, one of the assists came from Viktor Kozlov.

Just 54 seconds into the second period, Ovechkin snapped in his twelfth goal of the season for his sixth NHL career hat trick. That's three goals in three shots on goal, all within a 17:25 game time span. Atlanta's second PP goal of the game came on Slava Kozlov's 12th goal of the season, which he scored off one of a couple rebounds. The period ended with the Caps ahead by two.

Karl Alzner skates with Milan Jurcina in his first NHL game.

The third period started like the first two, with an early period goal by the Capitals. This time it was Kozlov, assisted by Ovechkin. Ovie served up an outlet pass to Kozzy, who skated smoothly up the middle of the ice and easily deposited the biscuit past Ondrej Pavelec, just under the crossbar of the goal. Atlanta's Nathan Oystrick scored the final goal of the game at 12:28 into the third, when his slapshot deflected off of defenseman Tyler Sloan.

All the Caps played well in this game, including the four call ups from Hershey. It was Karl Alzner's very first career NHL game, and he did very well. Alex Ovechkin now has 12 goals and 17 assists this season, putting him (29 points) ahead of former scoring leader for the team, Alexander Semin (27 points). Ovechkin achieved his hat trick in a total on ice time of 8:20, and he almost had a fourth goal a few times. Obviously, it was good to see Washington score on a couple of power plays. The PP is starting to work well for the Caps. The win is sure to have lifted the spirits of future AHL Hall Of Famer and current Capitals' Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, the players and the fans, after having lost three straight on the road.

Capitals Vs Thrashers 10/10/2008 Review

Capitals 4 - Thrashers 7

The 2008-2009 NHL Hockey season got off to a rough start last night for the Washington Capitals. Looking at the score, it seems fairly obvious that while their offense did well against the Atlanta Thrashers, their defense and goaltending were abysmal. That's not the most accurate statement, but that about covers the overall picture.

The 18 year old Atlanta rookie defenseman Zach Bogosian started his first NHL game off with a two minute holding penalty at 1:52 in the first period. Just under two minutes later, Washington thought they had the first goal of the game. However, the strike by Brooks Laich was disallowed because his stick was above the goal crossbar when he knocked the puck in. Soon after, things went south for the Capitals. Though the Thrashers hadn't gotten more than one shot off in the first eight minutes, they made the second one count. Former Columbus Blue Jacket Ron Hainsey tipped in the first of three straight Atlanta goals at 8:20. After his Power Play goal, his teammates Marty Reasoner and Bryan Little quickly added two even strength goals. Just 23 seconds after Little put the puck past new Washington netminder Jose Theodore, the Caps got on the score board. High in the slot and surrounded by defenders, Alexander Semin banked one in off the post to Kari Lehtonen's right. A couple four on four situations later, the period mercifully ended.

In the first period, the referees were calling the game tighter than a frog's butt. The same could also be said about the second period. The Capitals' goalie Theodore continued looking very shaky, misplaying the puck by the restricted area twice within the first few minutes of the middle frame. At 9:10, Washington's David Steckel tipped the puck in behind Lehtonen, who had been drawn out from the goal on a slapshot by defenseman Tom Poti. Semin also earned an assist on the play. The Caps' comeback hopes seemed dashed, when Slava Kozlov potted a PP goal, putting the Thrash back up by two a mere 20 seconds later. Jose Theodore was then replaced in net for Washington by Brent Johnson. Johnny looked very strong, making some nice saves right away. Soon after, Green tied the game at 4-4 with two consecutive PP goals less than a minute apart. The Caps were hot now, and it looked like they might pull this one off after all.

Washington continued to play well into the third period. Johnson kept stopping the puck, and Tomas Fleischmann kept putting on some dazzling moves, driving the puck toward the net. But then, Alex Ovechkin failed to make good on a rare penalty shot. Almost two thirds of the way through the final period, the game started going back the other way again. Bryan Little got his second goal of the game, quickly followed up with a strike from Colby Armstrong. With 3:53 left on the clock, Todd White snapped home Atlanta's seventh and final goal. Toward the end of the game, we were treated to three rather quick fights. After a couple misses by Thrasher's Eric Boulton, John Erskine landed Boulton on his ass with one punch. Then, Zach Bogosian had the misfortune of going up against Caps' Donald Brashear. Yeah, that didn't take too long either. The Matt Bradley versus Atlanta's Chris Thorburn tussle in the finals seconds was a bit closer. Since winning fights doesn't add to the score, the game ended Washington 4 - Atlanta 7.

So, coach Bruce Boudreau and his Capitals lost to Bruce's best friend John Anderson and his Thrashers, in John's very first NHL game as head coach. They will face each other five more times during the regular season. I'm sure the Caps' back end will be in better form on those occasions. As far as the outlook for Washington at this point, not to worry. One down, 81 more to go. As Caps fans, what about this game should we concern ourselves with? The successful return of a healthy Michael Nylander and Captain Chris Clark.
