Today's Tune: "Back In Business" By AC/DC

There are a couple reasons for the 'Today's Tune' song selection posted on Junior's Eyes today. They both have to do with my favorite NHL hockey team, the Washington Capitals.

After falling behind the Boston Bruins 2 - 1 in the first round of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Capitals evened up the series (2-2) by winning Game 4 on Thursday. They did this without their number one center Nicklas Backstrom, due to his one-game suspension for a crosscheck.

Everything is new, evened up, reset. The Washington Capitals play Game 5 this afternoon (3:00 PM EDT), and Backstrom is back in too.

This 1985 track, by AC/DC, really fits the situation these guys are in tonight. Nicklas Backstrom and the Capitals are definitely "Back In Business" again.

Feel the need, for one more round..."

Postgame Notebook: Bruins 4, Capitals 3, SO
By Mike Vogel - Senior Writer at WashingtonCaps.com

On A Roll – The Caps came up on the short end of a 4-3 shootout decision in the 2009-10 season finale against Boston this afternoon. But by any measure, Washington is heading into the postseason on quite a roll.

The Caps are 5-0-2 in their last seven games. They are 13-2-5 in 20 games since the conclusion of the NHL’s Olympic break. And they fashioned a 30-4-7 record (67 points) in the season’s second half. If maintained over the course of a full regular season slate of 82 games, Washington’s second-half pace would result in a league record for points in a season...

Ready For The Playoffs
By Joe Beninati - Washington Capitals Play-by-Play
at Comcast SportsNet - Washington, DC

I was at Verizon Center today for a game that had no bearing in the Eastern Conference standings, and still I witnessed two teams push themselves to the very end. It's just not in a hockey player's mentality to go through the motions. From what I could tell, the only thing this game lacked was the usual physical intensity that accompanies NHL play.

For example, Mike Green diving to block a shot late in the game in a game that had no consequence, to me is a perfect example of players playing to the very bitter end. These two teams were not interested in bashing bodies today, not with so much on the line beginning next week. Boston rested its most intimidating player, Zdeno Chara, and two other key forwards, 42-year-old Mark Recchi and slick center Patrice Bergeron. Bruce Boudreau elected to give Eric Fehr and Tomas Fleischmann and Quintin Laing the day off up front...

US Troops Use Rock Music Against Taliban
By mdome at Classic Rock

US forces are using music from Thin Lizzy, Metallica and The Offspring to try and force Taliban insurgents in the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand out into the open.Said one officer from these American forces: “Taliban hate that music. Some locals complain but it’s a way to push them to choose. It’s motivating Marines as well. There are no obscenities but we tell them they’re gonna die”.

It’s not the first time American troops have used rock and metal bands as a weapon. In fact, it’s becoming almost the norm!

Script Frenzy 2010: Day Ten
By Kameron at I May Have Been Born Yesterday
But I Stayed Up All Night

Back in the day, science fiction/fantasy writer Harlan Ellison used to do a promotional stunt for bookstores he enjoyed. Harlan would sit in the front window of the store and write a short story from scratch – sometimes starting from a sentence submitted by a stranger. One of Harlan's goals with these promotions was to de-mystify the creative process. He was upset that lots of people seemed to regard artistic creativity as a form of magic, and wanted to demonstrate that writing was work. So to prove his point, Harlan...

It’s an Honor Roll Weekend, and We’ve Extraordinary Honorees Wearing Our Crest
By pucksandbooks at On Frozen Blog

Hockey, the ultimate team sport, has become conspicuously individualized this weekend in Washington. And that’s fine. We’re still in the silly season that’s prelude to the postseason, when games have meager meaning for your 120-point Washington Capitals, and it’s a big deal for Alexander Ovechkin to score 50 goals, again, for Nicklas Backstrom to earn 100 points for the first time, and for Alexander Semin to score 40 goals for the first time in his NHL career.

Seconds after Alexander Ovechkin met Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly at center ice in Friday night’s pregame, to accept the league’s President’s trophy, all of Verizon Center’s interest focused on Ovi and his pursuit of 50. He entered play Friday night trailing you know who by a single goal in the race for the Richard trophy, and Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin by two points in the race for the Art Ross. Capitals’ fans are very possessive, very parochial, when it comes to Ovi and the league’s individual honor hardware. They don’t want him to part with a single piece of glory...

Want to learn how to play AC/DC’s classic song Shoot To Thrill, and win a guitar as well? Well, now’s your chance. Sony have teamed up with online guitar teacher Justin Sandercoe to create a video which could have you playing the song like Angus Young (although you’d have to provide your own school uniform).

Not only that, but if you film yourself playing the song and then upload it, you stand a chance of winning a one off, customised Gibson SG. Find out more at www.justinguitar.com/acdc . All this is to promote the release of the AC/DC: Iron Man 2 album on April 19. The full details on that are here.

Sex Pistols’ Jones Remembers Malcolm McLaren
By mdome at Classic Rock

Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones has paid tribute to former manager Malcolm McLaren, who died a couple of days ago at the age of 64. Said Jones: “I was upset when I heard the news, as I’ve always had a soft spot for Malcolm. I knew him since I was 17 before the Pistols formed — I used to drive him around in Vivienne Westwood’s car to the tailors in London in the days of the Let It Rock clothing store.

“Malcolm was definitely the Brian Epstein of punk — without him it wouldn’t have happened the way it did. I stayed friends with him throughout the years despite some of our differences. He came on (my radio show) Jonesy’s Jukebox a couple of years ago, and that’s a good memory. But my fondest memory of Malcolm, and I loved the guy, was his birthday gift to me when I turned 21 — he got me a hooker and some heroin.”

Today's Tune: "Let's Get It Up" By AC/DC

On March 27, 1998, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra for use as a treatment for male impotence. It was the first boner pill to be approved for this condition within the United States.

To celebrate what must have been a really happy event for a lot of very frustrated people, I've chosen an appropriate song for the anniversary of this occasion. Our 'Today's Tune' is "Lets Get It Up" by AC/DC. The track first appeared on their 1981 album, 'For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)'. It was later released as a single.

This particular video shows the band performing at the Capital Centre (No longer exists) in Mitchellville (Usually refferred to as Largo or Landover), Maryland during the album tour. Those of you that know me can try to spot me in the crowd. I had a floor seat to the right of the center isle, close to the front (13th to 15th row?).

Today's Tune: "Ride On" And "Whole Lotta Rosie" By AC/DC

Bon Scott sang "One of these days, I'm gonna change my evil ways ...", but he didn't quite live long enough to do that. The Scottish born Australian lead singer for the hard rhythmic rocking band AC/DC, died on February 19, 1980. Thirty years later, I can still remember how I was left with a broken heart and total disbelief, when I heard the news.

In honor of the truly unique individual that was Bon Scott, with his equally unique voice, the first 'Today's Tune' song for this February 19th is "Ride On" (1976), by AC/DC. The slide-show tribute style video I've chosen includes pieces of different interviews in the last few minutes. Bon discusses the inspiration for the song "Whole Lotta Rosie" (1977), the riggers of long tours, and you can hear and feel his loneliness and depression while he's speaking. The person that put this thing together did a good job.

Since I mentioned "Whole Lotta Rosie", I've decided to include it bonus track. The performance you hear in the video is from the October 16, 1979 Towson Center concert at Towson University, in Towson, MD. I bought a good copy of this bootlegged show on cassette right after it happened. Later, I found out my cousin Keith was sitting on the stage during the concert.

Today's Tune: "Cold Hearted Man" By AC/DC

On December 2, 1982, doctors at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah performed the first implant of a permanent artificial heart in a human. Sixty-one year old retired dentist, Dr. Barney Clark was the recipient of the man-made heart. He lived 112 days with the device, dying on March 23, 1983.

For our 'Today's Tune', we look at the life of a man with a much different kind of heart problem. The lyrics of AC/DC's "Cold Hearted Man" describe a real bastard, who ends up regretting having lived the lonely life of a bully. Making sure everyone feared him, he was never able to enjoy a lasting relationship.

"Cold Hearted Man" was originally released only on the European versions of the album 'Powerage' (May 25, 1978). I still have one of the superior French vinyl copies. The tune is finally included worldwide in a recently released box set called 'Backtracks' (November 10, 2009). The edgy sound that was pressed into the original vinyl has been softened up a bit for all CD releases.

Today's Tune: "Problem Child" By AC/DC

'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' album released in Australia on September 20, 1976.

John Ritter, born on September 17, 1948, was (Died September 11, 2003) a very talented American actor and comedian. Ritter is mostly remembered for playing Jack Tripper in the long running ABC sitcom Three's Company. He also appeared in episodes of many popular television shows, and was working in another comedy series of his own called 8 Simple Rules, when he passed away because of a leaking aorta that was caused by a congenital heart defect. John had mostly modest success in films, with 'Problem Child' (1990) doing well enough to earn a sequel called 'Problem Child 2' (1991). The 'Today's Tune' track for today is a live version of "Problem Child" (1976) by hard rockers AC/DC.
