Today's Tune: "Candle In The Wind 1997" By Elton John

It was on August 31, 1997 that England's Princess of Wales Diana was killed in a car crash. The deadly crash happened in an underpass tunnel in Paris, France, and it also took the lives of her lover Dodi Al-Fayed and the driver of the car they were riding in. The loss of Diana moved singer Elton John to create another version of his older hit song "Candle In The Wind" . John wrote the music, while the lyrics to the original version had been written by Bernie Taupin. Though many people remember it as "Goodbye England's Rose", the actual title is "Candle In The Wind 1997".

Today's Tune: "Back In Black" By AC/DC

Lewis Black getting angry on The Daily Show set.

Happy birthday to American comedian and actor Lewis Black. Black was born in Washington, DC on August 30, 1948, and then raised in Silver Spring, MD. No special treatment for people who are from my own state. I love his angry, build up to a climax style of humor. It's a technique I use myself, when trying to get through being pissed off about something. Finding humor in the wake of something really aggravating and incredibly stupid can be very helpful.

There's no great mystery to where we're going today for the 'Today's Tune'. It doesn't take long to think of the 'Back in Black with Lewis Black' segment from The Daily Show. "Back In Black" by hard rockers AC/DC is cued up and ready to play. Hit it!

Today's Tune: "Motorcycle Man" By Saxon

Softeis on March 10, 2004.

On August 29 in 1885, a motorised petroleum powered bicycle was patented. It was designed and built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, who called their invention a riding car. However, many call the motorised two-wheeler the world's first motorcycle. For today, the band I chose is among the most obvious, when thinking about motorcycles. England's New Wave Of British Heavy Metal band Saxon have created a few outstanding songs about motorbikes. This time 'round, we're going with the most obvious title wise for the historical link. It's "Motorcycle Man"!

Today's Tune: "One Vision" By Queen

Martin Luther King, Jr. addresses crowd at the Lincoln Memorial
in Washington, DC, where he gave his "I Have A Dream" speech.

On August 28, 1963, a very large group of people, including many political activists, participated in the 'March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom'. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. marched that day, and gave his "I Have A Dream" speech in Washington, DC. His speech was about his dream of all people working and living together in harmony. With that in mind, today I've chosen the Queen song - "One Vision". The song was written about King and his speech on that day, with the idea for it originally coming from drummer Roger Taylor. Obviously, Taylor and the band also dreamed of "hope and unity".

Today's Tune: "Cosmos Rockin" By Queen + Paul Rodgers

Mars viewed from the Hubble Space Telescope on June 26, 2001.

The distance between planets varies due to their inexact orbits around the Sun, which also moves. On August 27, 2003, the planet Mars came as close to Earth as it had done in almost 60,000 years. The two planets are believed to have gotten as close as 55,758,005 kilometres apart. Scientists expect the distance between Earth and Mars to decrease slightly during these close passes throughout the passing years. In order to relate to this bit of history, 'Today's Tune' is "Cosmos Rockin" by the short lived supergroup Queen + Paul Rodgers.

Today's Tune: "Crazy Train" By Ozzy Osbourne - Featuring Yuto Miyazawa

Crazy Train amusement park ride. Photo by cherri at AllThingsBerry.com .

I have to be honest. For the first time since starting the 'Today's Tune' feature, I was having a lot of trouble coming up with the right song and reasoning for choosing it. Usually sorting through birthdays, deaths and historical events leads to picking out a track that can somehow be linked together with something. That wasn't working very well this time, and it was driving me crazy.

Eventually, I decided that if I'm going to be losing my mind anyway, I might as well climb aboard the "Crazy Train", and have some fun while taking a ride with Ozzy Osbourne. This particular video of that metal hit features a 9 year old Japanese guitarist - Yuto Miyazawa. Apparently Ozzy's going with a youth movement, while searching for a permanent replacement for Zakk Wylde. By the way, it would have been nice if Ozzy could have refrained from using the F word while the kid was on stage with him, but that didn't happen. At least I've warned you that it's coming. Like you really needed a warning about that, huh?

Today's Tune: "Metal Gods" By Judas Priest

English heavy metal singer Rob Halford (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Halford) was born on August 25, 1951. One of the best and most recognizable singers of the metal genre, Halford is mostly known for his time with Judas Priest, who have always been one of the top live show bands. Therefore, today's offering is one of their older tunes, "Metal Gods". Happy Birthday Rob!

Other August 25th births: 1909 - English actor Michael Rennie ('The Day The Earth Stood Still', 'Phone Call From A Stranger', 'Cyborg 2087'), 1930 - Scottish actor Sean Connery ('James Bond', 'Highlander', 'The Hunt For Red October'), 1949 - American bass player and singer Gene Simmons (Kiss), 1954 - English singer and song writing genius Elvis Costello ("Alison", "Veronica", "She"), and 1968 - American TV cook and talk show host Rachael Ray (30 Minute Meals, $40 A Day, Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels).

Today's Tune: "Oo-De-Lally" By Roger Miller

King John of England (Reigned April 6, 1199 to October 19, 1216) was married for the second time (First was annulled) on August 24, 1200. He earned himself the reputation of being a greedy and power hungry man through some very ruthless actions, including while he was still a prince and his brother King Richard I was away at "that crazy Crusade". He eventually signed the power limiting Magna Carta, though it took serious pressure to bring that about. With King John in mind, I've selected Roger Miller's "Oo-De-Lally" from Walt Disney's 'Robin Hood' for 'Today's Tune'.

August 12 birthdays: 1957 - English actor, comedian and author Stephen Fry (Blackadder, A Bit Of Fry And Laurie, Jeeves And Wooster), 1958 - American actor and comedian Steve Guttenberg ('Police Academy', 'Cocoon', 'Three Men And A Baby'), 1960 - American baseball player Cal Ripken, Jr. (Baltimore Orioles), 1988 - English actor Rupert Grint ('Harry Potter', 'Driving Lessons', 'Wild Target').

"Ordinary World" (Duran Duran), sung by English singer and songwriter Simon LeBon (Duran Duran, Arcadia) and Italian opera singer and humanitarian Luciano Pavarotti ('Tosca', 'Turandot', The Three Tenors), was chosen for today because the world we live on was first remotely photographed from the distance of our Moon on this day in 1966. These first photographs of Earth were taken by equipment aboard the Lunar Orbiter 1 unmanned robotic spacecraft. NASA had sent the spacecraft in search of safe landing areas for future lunar missions.

English actress Honor Blackman ('Goldfinger', 'To The Devil A Daughter', Doctor Who) was born on August 22, 1925. Happy birthday Honor. While she is always remembered for playing the character Cathy Gale in the TV show The Avengers and being a "Bond girl" (Pussy Galore), she has also done some singing. The tune for today is "Kinky Boots" , which she recorded in 1964 with Patrick Macnee, who played John Steed in The Avengers.

Today's Tune: "I Fought The Law" By The Clash

Although considered English, Joe Strummer (Real Name: John Graham Mellor) was born in Turkey on August 21, 1952 to a family of mixed heritage. He spent most of his growing years in England, but lived in several other widely varied countries as well. Strummer (Died December 22, 2002) is mostly known as songwriter, guitarist and singer for The Clash. He also spent time with The 101ers (before The Clash), Big Audio Dynamite, The Pouges and The Mescaleros (3 albums). Today we offer "I Fought The Law" by The Clash.

Other August 21 births: 1938 - American singer, songwriter and actor Kenny Rogers ("The Gambler", "She Believes In Me", "Through The Years"), 1952 - English bass player and singer Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath) and in 1989 - American actress Hayden Panettiere ('A Bug's Life', Malcolm In The Middle, Heroes).

Today's Tune: "Space Truckin" By Deep Purple

I've got a few reasons for picking "Space Truckin" by Deep Purple for today. On August 20, 1975, NASA launched the Viking 1 probe onto it's way toward the planet Mars. Then, on August 20, 1977, Voyager 2 was sent out to go beyond Mars to investigate planets further out. Both were highly successful in their missions. Also, quite a few actors that appeared in the classic Doctor Who television series were born on an August 20.

Birthdays on August 20: 1932 - English actor Anthony Ainley (Upstairs, Downstairs, 'The Land That Time Forgot', Doctor Who), 1941 - English musician and singer Dave Brock (Hawkwind), 1942 - American singer, musician and actor Isaac Hayes (The Rockford Files, Stargate SG-1), 1943 - Scottish actor of all mediums Sylvester McCoy (The Last Place On Earth, Doctor Who, King Lear), 1948 - English vocalist Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), 1949 - Irish singer, songwriter and musician Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) born in England, 1962 - English actress and television presenter Sophie Aldred (Doctor Who, Corners, Dimensions In Time), and in 1971 - English comedian, writer and actor David Walliams (Little Britain, Marple, 'A Cock And Bull Story').

Today's Tune: "Disturbing The Priest" By Black Sabbath And "Thunderbird" By Quiet Riot

Once again, I'm going to serve up two tracks for the 'Today's Tune' feature. One reason is that both videos are of the still picture variety. Secondly, I just plain felt like it. Making the cut today, we have "Disturbing The Priest" by the 1983 lineup of England's hard rockers Black Sabbath, to celebrate the birthday of former Sab singer Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath). Slot number two is covered by the American heavy band Quiet Riot, and the tune is "Thunderbird" (1983), probably my favorite by them. I chose this tune because of the passing of England born actor Peter Dyneley (Thunderbirds, 'The Manster') on August 19, 1977. Dyneley is mostly known for his voiceover work in the television show Thunderbirds and the subsequent films.

Other August 19th births: 1921 - American science fiction screenwriter and producer Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek), 1939 - English drummer Ginger Baker (Cream, Blind Faith), 1946 - Former American President Bill Clinton, 1951 - English bass player and song writer John Deacon (Queen), 1963 - American actor John Stamos (Full House, ER) and 1969 - Canadian American television and film comedy actor Matthew Perry (Friends, 'The Whole Nine Yards').

Another August 19th, 1977 death would be American comedy film actor and game show host Groucho Marx ('Monkey Business', 'A Night At The Opera', You Bet Your Life).

Today's Tune: "Cold As Ice" By Foreigner

Happy birthday to Dennis Elliott (59 years old), English drummer for the band Foreigner from 1976 to 1991. Elliott also played for and recorded albums with If and Ian Hunter. After retiring from the music business, he became a professional sculptor.

I remember running a snowball stand with my two sisters through the summer of 1977 and 1978. Naturally we had a radio playing during the work day. Foreigner released their first album 'Foreigner' just before the summer of '77. The second single from that album was titled "Cold As Ice", and must have been played a thousand times while we sweated our way through those two summers. I know listening to that song playing always cooled me off, so I thought it might help you cool off today. OK, that's a load of ol' ballocks in'it, but you can try it anyway. Maybe you'll have more luck.

Today's Tune: "Dreamboat Annie" By Heart

Illustration of the Clermont steamboat, found at Wikipedia.

On August 17, 1807, the North River Steamboat (later known as the Clermont), built by American engineer and inventor Robert Fulton with the help of American lawyer and politician Robert R. Livingston, carried paying passengers from New York City to Albany, NY via the Hudson River, thereby introducing the world's first commercial steamboat service. To commemorate this piece of history, the tune for today is "Dreamboat Annie" by Heart.

Today's Tune: "Hand Of Doom" By Black Sabbath

Image found at FotoWorks.net - © Ian Jebbett.

American music icon, singer and actor Elvis Presley passed away on August 16, 1977, from a drug overdose. His popularity had been declining along with his health. Presley became the butt of a lot of jokes, due to his ever expanding waistline.

It seems amazing to most people that someone who has had so much success, fame and fortune could treat themselves so badly, but many of the greatest entertainers have. There is tremendous pressure to keep producing endlessly and consistently. Some find it too much to handle, and they become self destructive. Drugs are their way to escape from the pains of the real world.

When I was a young child, I watched Presley's movies. Members of my family were among the millions of Elvis music fans. Since I'm not a huge fan, and don't believe he sang any drug related songs, I'll turn to a band who have put out a few. The song is "Hand Of Doom" by England's heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. As with their others, this song points out what a terrible and sometimes deadly path drug use can be.

Today's Tune: "Kozmic Blues" By Janis Joplin

The original 'Woodstock Music And Art Fair' opened on August 15, 1969, and ran until the 18th. On the evening of the second day, a blues singer from Port Arthur, Texas USA - Janis Joplin performed with her new backup group, the Kozmic Blues Band.

The video I picked does not show footage from 'Woodstock', but is of a song they played that night. "Kozmic Blues" may not be familiar to you if you're not a Janis Joplin fan. Have a listen to this slide-show type video, and you'll hear one of America's best.

Here are partial lists of people who were born on August 14th, people who died on the 14th of August, and a few historical events from various August 14ths. I usually include these bits in the 'Today's Tune' posts, but that was totally dedicated to blackouts today. Sometimes these lists can be of interest. You might learn something you didn't know or remember.

Today's Tune: "Blackout" By Scorpions

On August 14, 2003, much of the Northeastern part of the USA and part of Canada were suffering from a blackout. No, not that kind, a power blackout. I don't really remember it, just like when you have the other kind. My heavy partying days were over by then, so that can't be why it escapes my memory. Anyway, the tune I've cued up for yah is "Blackout" (1982 - 'Blackout' album) by that German rock band that always looks like they're having a good time, the Scorpions. And yes, the song is about the beverage induced "blackout". Just in case you blackout and can't remember playing the video, I've made it a double. No, not that kind. You really have you're mind set on drinking heavily, now don't you?

Today's Tune: "Time Goes By" By Triumph

Triumph inducted into Canadian Music Hall Of Fame April 6, 2008.

H.G. Wells died on August 13, 1946. An English writer, Wells ('The Island Of Doctor Moreau', 'The War Of The Worlds', 'The First Men In The Moon') was well known for authoring books on many subjects, but mostly science-fiction fantasy works. A favorite by readers of Wells is his 'The Time Machine'. There are many incredible songs and instrumental tracks to choose from that carry the time theme. The tune I picked for today is one of the more rocking ones. It's "Time Goes By" from the November 1984 album 'Thunder Seven' by Triumph, a very underrated and underplayed Canadian rock band.

Also died on an August 13th: 1995 - American baseball legend Mickey Mantle, 2004 - American cooking show host and cookbook author Julia Child.

Born on an August 13: 1899 - English film and television producer and director Alfred Hitchcock ('Dial M For Murder', 'Psycho', 'The Birds'), 1948 - American soprano singer Kathleen Battle ('The Barber Of Seville', 'The Marriage Of Figaro', 'Don Pasquale'), 1959 - American actor and radio talk show host Danny Bonaduce (The Partridge Family, The Danny Bonaduce Show).

Today's Tune: "Beginnings" By Chicago

Photo found at Dreamlife.com .

Just a short, quick posting for the 'Today's Tune', this time. The US town of Chicago, Illinois was formed on August 12th, way back in 1833. Therefore I've chosen a song by the band from that area, who also happen to be named Chicago. Since we're dealing with beginnings, the appropriate song is titled "Beginnings".

Today's Tune: "Children Of The Sea" -Black Sabbath

My reasoning for picking "Children Of The Sea" by Black Sabbath is quite simple. I wish I was at the beach! I would love to be swimming in the ocean, or just lounging in a beach chair watching the babes walk by. Believe me, when they see me, they just walk on by. I long to feel the sand sifting between my toes, while I sip on a cool drink. Since a vacation isn't in the budget this year (Again!), guess I'll have to daydream instead. Hey as long as I'm dreaming, I'm probably gonna be accompanied by someone out of my league (They all are) too.

Born on August 11: 1925 - American entertainer and talk show host Mike Douglas, 1944 - Scottish actor (Film, stage, TV, radio) and director Ian McDiarmid ('Star Wars', Inspector Morse, 'King Lear'), 1950 - American computer engineer and founder of Apple Computer, Inc. Steve Wozniak, 1957 - American drummer Richie Ramone (Ramones).

August 11 deaths: English film and television actor Peter Cushing ('Dracula', Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 A.D., 'Star Wars') in 1994, American musician, as well as radio, film and animation film (voiceover) actor Phil Harris (The Jack Benny Program, 'The Jungle Book', 'Robin Hood') in 1995, and in 2006 American entertainer and talk show host Mike Douglas died on the same day of August on which he was born.

Today's Tune: "Hotter Than Hell" By Kiss

It's been a really hot day for my area. How about you? Harford County and the rest of Maryland has heated up to the upper nineties, with a heat index well into the 100s. Gotta feel lucky though, it's been a very mild summer so far around here. The South have been dealing with these temps for a good while now. But, for today at least, it feels "Hotter Than Hell".

August 10 birthdays include American singer Ronnie Spector (66 years old) of The Ronettes and Ian Anderson (62 years old), Scottish singer and musician from the band Jethro Tull.

American singer, musician and actor Isaac Hayes passed away on this day in 2008. He was 10 days away from turning 66 years old.

Today's Tune: "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" By Queen

Right. So, it's Sunday, and I'm not feelin' too peppy today. I usually don't on Sundays. What I'm getting at is ... There won't be a long post with dozens of informative links on Junior's today. What there will be is the 'Today's Tune'. Considering my desire for a day of relative inactivity, I've chosen "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" by Queen. Please, feel free to join in. Cheers!

Remembrance Of Terry Nation

Welsh screenwriter and novelist Terry Nation was born in Cardiff, Wales on August 8, 1930 (Died 1997). He wrote single episodes and multiple episode serials (stories) for several British television programmes that have been popular in many countries around the world.

He is most widley known for creating the infamous and horrifing Daleks. Nation introduced these alien monsters in the second serial (story) of the original classic Doctor Who, the greatest and longest running (26 seasons: 1963 - 1989) science fiction television show ever to be broadcast. The seven episode story was called 'The Daleks' but is also known as "The Dead Planet" (Name of first episode - originally aired December 21, 1963) or even The Menace. Terry wrote many episodes and created other characters and creatures that were popular in the show.

Terry Nation created another successful science fiction show called Blake's 7. Fans of this programme probably don't mind being called a "Cult Following". Like Doctor Who, it's a completely addictive show, with slightly more humor. Like the Doctor, the characters, spend a lot of time being chased through space. They don't have a TARDIS to time travel in, so they just have to steel the best space cruiser they can get their hot little escapie hands on. I always saw Blake's 7 as Robin Hood set in space. It lasted four seasons (or series) from 1978 to 1981.

Other fine shows that Nation contributed to include: The Avengers, The Baron, The Persuaders! , The Champions, Department S, and The Saint.

Terry Nation died from emphysema in Los Angeles, California on March 9, 1997. He had been working bringing Blake's 7 back to television with Paul Darrow (Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Timelash) shortly before he passed away.
