"Ordinary World" (Duran Duran), sung by English singer and songwriter Simon LeBon (Duran Duran, Arcadia) and Italian opera singer and humanitarian Luciano Pavarotti ('Tosca', 'Turandot', The Three Tenors), was chosen for today because the world we live on was first remotely photographed from the distance of our Moon on this day in 1966. These first photographs of Earth were taken by equipment aboard the Lunar Orbiter 1 unmanned robotic spacecraft. NASA had sent the spacecraft in search of safe landing areas for future lunar missions.
