Today's Tune: WKRP In Cincinnati
Opening And Closing Themes

Happy Birthday Howard Hesseman! The American television and film actor, best known for his work on comedy television series programmes in the 1970s and 1980s, turned 70 years old today.

Hesseman's most memorable character is from one of the best American sitcoms of all time, WKRP In Cincinnati (1978 – 1982), in which he played a DJ named Dr. Johnny Fever. Our 'Today's Tune' installment for today includes both "WKRP In Cincinnati Main Theme", the opening theme (Performed by Steve Carlisle), and "WKRP In Cincinnati End Credits" (Performed by Jim Ellis), which is obviously the closing theme. As an added bonus (Yippie!), this video includes the entire episode called "Hoodlum Rock" (1978).

A meltdown of Chernobyl proportions (update)
By tj at Alex Ovetjkin

As you probably know the Russian President has cancelled his visit to Vancouver for closing ceremony. And you guess it right, it's related to a hockey meltdown of team Russia vs. Canada.

Yes, it goes back to 1972 and it's all about the national pride and the way how Canadians humiliated the Russians, beat them up and broke Kharlamov's ankle. This would be remembered a thousand years from now. It's not that the Russians didn't deliver the same blows to Canadians, in 1981 Canada Cup they won 8:1 with Canada having such stars as Gretzky, Lafleur, Bossy, Perreault, Ray Bourque and Robinson. For Russians the game that will be remembered the most will be the win over Canada. You can lose to Finns, Swedes, Americans, Czechs, but the one that will hurt for a long time will be the loss to Canada...

The Blues winger was assessed a five-minute major for interference and a game misconduct after nailing Bradley with a forearm/elbow to the face as the Washington winger looked around to follow a pass he had just made...

Tony Iommi And Ian Gillan Send Gifts Of Music
To Armenian Music School

Photo of Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan included with music gifts story.

World famous musicians Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell) and Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Ian Gillan Band) visited a music school in Gyumri, Armenia in October of 2009. They saw the conditions under which the N 6 Music School has been operating since their former building was destroyed during a 1988 earthquake. Since then, classes have been hosted in temporary shelters. Recently, Iommi and Gillan had musical instruments and supplies shipped to the school as gifts in order to ease some of their financial burden, while they're still trying to get back to a normal situation. The following news entry about these events was posted to Tony Iommi's web site on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan Give Musical Gifts
to Armenian Music School

World famous rock musicians Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell) sent musical instruments as a gift to the N6 musical school in Gyumri.

Professional musical instruments from Fender Musical Instruments Corporation were supplied to Yerevan: 4 acoustic guitars of the Japanese Takamine Company and a Blackhawk drum kit of the Gretsch Drums Company. The musicians also gave Paiste сcymbals and Vic Firth drumsticks, presented by John Henrys Ltd.

On October 1, 2009, Ian Gillan and Toni Iommi visited the N 6 music school in Gyumri within the framework of Armenia Grateful 2 Rock project, realized by Mediamax and Australian “Do Something” organization. The director of the school, Harutyun Asatryan, spoke with the rock stars informing them that the pupils would love to have new musical instruments to practice with. The N 6 music school in Gyumri was destroyed during 1988 earthquake and is still hosted in temporary shelters.

“We express huge gratitude to the great musicians for their attention towards Armenian children, who study music in difficult conditions. Almost 5 months have passed from the time of Gillan and Iommi’s visit to Armenia, but this present is evidences that their sincere wish to help the Armenian school has not become weaker to any extent. I want to also sincerely thank the managers of the musicians Ralph Baker and Phil Banfield, who directly dealt with acquisition of the instruments”, Mediamax Director Ara Tadevosyan stated.

Meet the "Sovetsky Express" Press
Posted by tj at Alex Ovetjkin

From Pavel Lysenkov's blog (blog.sovsport.ru/users/lysenkov/post121273528/):

This is a very interesting story. We left Team Russia's training and wanted to go to the coveted Greek restaurant, but it only opens at 16:00 (4 pm). There is another half an hour. We walk in the park and see the Canadians who are playing street hockey. Instantly we got an idea to organize an international match Russia - Canada. The Russian journalists immediately knock together a team dubbed "The Soviet Express" (although we also had the idea to call it "Sports-Sports"). Here's the roster: Slava Malamud (in the goals), Kirill Belyakov (defense),...

No Monsters’ Ball at Giant Center
By pucksandbooks at On Frozen Blog

The Hershey Bears found themselves in an exceptionally unusual position before Saturday night’s game against Lake Erie: confronting the possibility of an actual losing streak. On Friday night the Bears traveled to Adirondack and lost a 2-0 lead, succumbing to the Phantoms 5-3. Hershey, however, doesn’t lose a lot. The Bears last lost consecutive games just before Thanksgiving, and one of those came in a shootout. The team’s last consecutive losses in regulation play occurred October 23rd and 24th — around the time of the World Series...

Chris Drury is on this team because he is Chris Drury
Craig Custance / Sporting News interview with Brian Burke
Posted by tj at Alex Ovetjkin

...There was some debate about Chris Drury being on this team, but he has played well. Does that validate that selection?
I'm not interested in being redeemed or validated. We either got the right group and we are going to have success or we didn't and we're not. As far as Chris Drury, like I said at the time, Chris Drury is on this team because he is Chris Drury. That's all you need to say about Chris Drury. He's a winner and he's a leader. We can count on him to do the right thing in every situation on the ice; we can count on him to help the younger players. I'm just thrilled that he is here and, so far, he has played well...

Ovechkin set to play with Malkin
By Dan Rosen at NHL.com / NHL All-Access Vancouver

VANCOUVER -- After practicing hard for the full hour over at the Brittania Centre, Alex Ovechkin walked off the ice sporting his usual gap-toothed smile. The superstar left wing was in good spirits less than 24 hours before Russia's pivotal game against the Czechs on Sunday.

It appears that Ovechkin will have a new center for Sunday's game. He was skating on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Semin while Pavel Datsyuk, who was centering Ovechkin and Semin, was between Ilya Kovalchuk and Maxim Afinogenov.

Ovechkin stopped to chat with NHL.com about that and more...

Get ready for the Dream Line!

Saturday afternoon's Team Russia practice featured a switch-around in the top two lines, with Pavel Datsyuk moving to pivot Ilya Kovalchuk and Maxim Afinogenov. New Media Convergence on the Farm

This weekend OFB embarks on a roadtrip we’ve sought since our start — to Hershey, but hauling along with us a hearty contingent of D.C. hockey bloggers. No Role For General Ross In 'Iron Man 2' Or 'Thor',

By Blair Marnell at MTV's Splash Page

One of the most memorable moments of director Louis Leterrier's "Incredible Hulk" movie was Robert Downey Jr.'s brief cameo as Tony Stark during a scene with William Hurt's Gen. And while Stark's line about "putting a team together" suggested a carefully worded reference to the "Avengers" movie, Hurt recently revealed that the entire scene was improvised with Downey...

What did we learn in Sweden? Allow The WRC Guru to explain

So, after a four month break the 2010 World Rally Championship is finally up and running, and as the snow dust settles after a sensational Rally Sweden, it looks like the year ahead will be cracker.

Of course it's not easy to draw too many long-term conclusions after a rally as specialised as Sweden, but the performances of the top drivers on ice have given us some useful indications about how the season might pan out...

Post Rally Sweden Q&A: Mikko Hirvonen
Posted at WRC.com

A fortnight ago Ford team-leader Mikko Hirvonen promised a new, more aggressive approach for the 2010 WRC season. And after the opening round in Sweden his new attitude seems to be working pretty well, thank you.

Of course it must be nice to start the season with a win - although for Mikko it's a feeling he'd never experienced before - but to be so quick that the six times world champion Sebastien Loeb gives up before the end? That was something new for everybody...

Nine Thought on the Marriage Strike
By Kameron at I May Have Been Born Yesterday
But I Stayed Up All Night

...II. The Marriage Strike

From what I can determine, the term “marriage strike” was coined in 2002 by columnists Glenn Sacks and Diana Thompson “The US marriage rate has dipped 40% over the past four decades,” they wrote,”to its lowest point ever. There are many plausible explanations for this trend, but one of the least mentioned is that American men, in the face of a family court system which is hopelessly stacked against them, have subconsciously launched a 'marriage strike.'”...

Wanted: More Patriots in Pucks
By pucksandbooks at On Frozen Blog

Like a good many other American hockey fans, I’ve been underwhelmed by NBC’s hockey coverage during this first week of the Winter Olympic Games. Bumped off the big channel for ice dancing was the first indignity. Then last night, after a particularly long and trying day at work, I sat down to watch Nick Backstrom and his Swedish teammates take on Germany, over on MSNBC, just wanting a game and a bottle of beer or two to salvage my hump day, and right as a 0-0, potential upset intrigue was setting in deep in period one, off went hockey at the stroke of 8:00 and on went . . . Where's The Promotion, NBC
By Mike Chen at From The Rink

While I've been far from glued to NBC's non-hockey Olympic coverage, I've caught my fair share of it and I've seen a sampling of the fluff pieces the network puts together in between events -- you know, the heartwarming tales of some athlete's home town or a mini-documentary on polar bears. (Seriously -- NBC actually popped up a graphic overlay that said "POLAR BEARS...in 5 minutes" during a broadcast. I like polar bears too, but come on.) However, I haven't seen too much about the Olympic hockey tournament other than some programming notes and shots of Wayne Gretzky from the opening ceremony...

...Seriously, it's not like a two-minute package highlighting how Ovechkin has taken D.C. by storm would take a lot of effort to put together -- and it's not like it'd be terribly out of place showcasing an Olympic athlete in an Olympic event. Heck, it might even make more sense than polar bears -- and I LIKE polar bears!...
