Today's Tune: "Highway Song" By Blackfoot

Photo from www.tccn.ca

Trans-Canada Highway, one of the largest (4,990 mi / 8,030 km) national highways in the world, officially opened on July 30, 1962. It's actually a multi-road system, running across the Southern regions of Canada, from one end to the other. This bit of transportation history lends us the opportunity to relate a rather good 'Today's Tune' selection.

Our featured track comes from a rock band that originated in the Southern US state of Florida. Simply titled "Highway Song", it comes from the 1979 Blackfoot album, 'Strikes'.

Today's Tune: "Play It Loud" By Saxon

Happy Birthday to Jim Marshall! Marshall was born in Acton, West London, England on July 29, 1923. He is the founder of the company that make Marshall Amps, the biggest name in live music amplifiers.

He had a career as an electrical engineer, but coming from a musically inclined family, also became a singer and drummer. Eventually, he was running his own music store, where he taught drum lessons. He had already made his own PA systems, when guitarists started talking to him about their need for a better amplifier than those available at that time. Jim Marshall began to manufacture more sophisticated amps, and he founded Marshall Amplification in 1962.

To celebrate the birthday of "The Father Of Loud", let's enjoy a tune from a band that's used Marshall stacks for many years. The NWOBHM band Saxon command you to "Play It Loud" (1981), in this 'Today's Tune'.

Does Alex Semin Need an Elite Center to Succeed?
By Kareem E. at Japers' Rink

Two weeks ago we completed our annual wrap of Capitals forward Alexander Semin. One of the questions at the end of the recap asked if Semin needed an elite center to pull more out of the enigmatic player. Challenging contemporary hockey wisdom, some openly thought no, that Semin, a wing, was enough of a playmaker that he could dictate play regardless of who he had as his pivot. It's an important question to answer, because if the answer is indeed "no", the Caps do not need to chase a high-cost center this summer...

Martin Popoff's "Black Sabbath FAQ"
By Joe Siegler at Black Sabbath Online

One of the things I get asked from time to time (usually after people read my timeline page) is why I don't write a book. The reason I usually give them is "What's the point? - There's a ton of books out there, and I'm not sure what unique perspective I could bring". So it was with that frame of mind that I first approached the news that a new Black Sabbath book was coming out from Martin Popoff. Martin's an old friend of mine, and I've got a couple of his older books as a customer. So I was thinking "Hey dude, you've already written a Sabbath book, what's with a second one?" Then I got a look at it. Martin figured out a proper angle for a repeat book on the same subject, not to present the band's history in a linear fashion like most every biography does. Here's the official blurb about the book:...

Review: 'Doctor Who' - 'A Good Man Goes to War':
Are you my mommy?

By Alan Sepinwall at What's Alan Watching?

...Obviously, the big thing to talk about with "A Good Man Goes to War" is the revelation that River Song is, in fact, Amy and Rory's daughter, and I'll get to that in a moment. But that news comes at the end of the episode, and what struck me before that was how overwhelmingly the hour was about how other people respond to the Doctor. That's obviously a running theme of the show, particularly in the way he upends the lives of his companions, but this episode felt like it was more about that than any other point in the modern series...

Today's Tune: "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps"
By Mari Wilson

Mari Wilson and her giant beehive hairdo, along with her smooth, comforting voice, make it into today's 'Today's Tune' (Dig the echo!). This happens because I wanted to honor a very hot and very talented New Zealand born Engish television and film actress on her special day. Happy Birthday to the lovely Gina Bellman!

The connection here (obviously) is Bellman's time starring as the quirky Jane Christie, in the fantastically funny Steven Moffat TV comedy, Coupling (UK 2000–2004). Mari Wilson's cover version of "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" is the theme song played, in part, to open and close each episode of the show.

You may also remember Gina Bellman for her roles in Blackeyes (1989 TV Drama), Jekyll (2007 TV Horror-Drama), and currently as grifter Sophie Devereaux in Leverage (2008-Present TV Drama).

Today's Tune: "Dirty Women" By Black Sabbath

Happy Birthday to Richard Wilson! On July 9, 1936, Wilson was born (Ian Colquhoun Wilson) in Greenock, a town in the old county of Renfrewshire, in Scotland. He has spent many years as a very well respected actor, theatre director and broadcaster. Wilson is mostly remembered for playing the very unlucky and grumpy old Victor Meldrew, for more than 10 years, in the BBC sitcom One Foot In The Grave.

Currently, Richard portrays Gaius, Camelot's court physician, in BBC's television drama Merlin.

For this 'Today's Tune', we draw upon the title of the 1999 Scottish comedy film 'Women Talking Dirty', which starred Richard Wilson alongside the likes of Gina McKee ('Notting Hill', 'Greyfriars Bobby', 'Scenes Of A Sexual Nature'), Helena Bonham Carter ('Henry VIII', 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows', 'The King's Speech') and James Nesbitt (Cold Feet, 'Jekyll', 'Five Minutes Of Heaven'). It's screenplay and the novel it was based upon were both written by Isla Dewar ('Dancing In A Distant Place', 'Secrets Of A Family Album', 'Giving Up On Ordinary').

Our featured track for this installment is the somewhat similarly titled "Dirty Women", a fun Black Sabbath tune, full of great guitar licks by metal riff master Tony Iommi.

Today's Tune: "The Miracle" By Queen
And "Miracles" By Jefferson Starship

Happy Birthday to Eve Myles! Born July 8, 1978 in Ystradgynlais, Powys, Wales, this Welsh beauty is a very talented television, stage, film and voice actress. Myles is most well known in the United States for her TV role as alien and monster investigator Gwen Cooper, in the fantasy / science-fiction Doctor Who spin-off show Torchwood (2006 - Present). In the United Kingdom, she is also remembered as Ceri Lewis/Owen in the Welsh drama Belonging (2000 - 2009). For the latest news on Eve Myles, visit fan site EveMyles.net .

Tonight, as if to be some sort of birthday present, the new season (4th) of Torchwood, known as Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres in North America via the Starz network. This new Americanized (Oooh God!) BBC Worldwide / Liberty Starz combo version will show in the UK starting July 14, 2011.

Many of the great American classic television shows have been British imports, but when it comes to science-fiction, the record isn't anywhere near as good as comedies, murder mysteries and crime-dramas. I am hopeful that it at least remains similar in overall quality to the first three series (seasons), which were produced by BBC Wales.

Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) and her original co-stars, John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) and Kai Owen (Gwen's husband - Rhys Williams), are joined by American film, television, and stage actor Bill Pullman ('While You Were Sleeping', 'Independence Day', 'You Kill Me'), who portrays convicted murderer Oswald Danes in Series 4. The "Miracle" theme for this season is advertised as something happens globally that makes it so "No one dies". SPOILER ALERT: However, it has recently been leaked that the once immortal Captain Jack becomes mortal, and now can die.

Staying with the miracle theme, our 'Today's Tune' is a double dose of musical medicine. First up is "The Miracle" (1989) by British rock band Queen. The follow up is "Miracles" (1975), by American rock group, Jefferson Starship.

2010-11 Rink Wrap: Mike Knuble
By David Getz at Japers' Rink

When Knuble signed with the Capitals in the summer of 2009, it was clear he was being brought in for one reason: to bring a big body, net-crashing presence to the first line and the powerplay, and using that framework, his 2010-11 season was largely a successful one. Knuble tied for the team lead in powerplay goals, scored more often than anyone else who saw regular powerplay time, and, despite the powerplay struggling for the majority of the season, actually increased his goals per minute from the 2009-10 season. Knuble was also a goal-scoring threat at even strength, trailing only Ovechkin and Alexander Semin in goals per minute...

2010-11 Rink Wrap: Marcus Johansson
By Becca H at Japers' Rink

...After a somewhat slow start to the season, Johansson gradually began to find his stride as an NHLer and by the midpoint of the year was showing confidence and a stronger offensive side than he had in his first few weeks with the team. He had just five points spread out across the first twenty-three games; from December 21 on, however, he didn't go more than three games without a point until the final five games of the regular season and eventually racked up 27 points - 16 of which came in the second half of the season...
