2010 F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Review

Tears of joy for Sebastian Vettel at 2010 Abu Dhabi GP.

The 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was held at Yas Marina Circuit, on Yas Island, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on November 14, 2010. It was the 19th and final round of the 2010 Formula One Season. The Driver's Championship lead changed several times heading toward the end of the season. It was finally decided for good when 23 years and four months old German Red Bull Renault driver Sebastian Vettel won the race, and became the youngest champion in Formula One history.

England's Lewis Hamilton, driving for McLaren Mercedes, finished second. Last season's champion, Lewis' English teammate Jenson Button was the third driver across the finish line.

Links to Formula1.com posts on this race, starting the day before with final practice and qualifying, and then on through to post race reactions and analysis, are in this review list. A highlights video for this final race is also included.

Preview links for this race can be found within the last couple regular 'Reading And Viewing List' blog entries here at Junior's Eyes. For more articles, visit the Formula1.com archives.

Final practice - Red Bull show their hand
Posted at Formula1.com on November 13, 2010

As many of their rivals suspected they would, Red Bull found a little bit more pace in Saturday afternoon's final practice session in Abu Dhabi, and Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber set the fastest times of the weekend. The German lapped in 1m 40.696s, and the Australian was just 0.133s adrift with 1m 40.829s...

Qualifying analysis - Webber left wounded and wondering
Posted at Formula1.com on November 13, 2010

For the four remaining title contenders, qualifying for this weekend's title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a fraught affair. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was the quickest when it counted, taking pole position for the tenth time this season, but his team mate Mark Webber seemed to crumble under the pressure, managing just fifth on the grid. In between were the Red Bull duo's remaining championship rivals McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, as well as 2009 title holder Jenson Button in the second MP4-25. The scene is thus set for a storming race. We take a team-by-team look at qualifying...

The young gun's won! Vettel's title-winning season
Posted at Formula1.com on November 14, 2010

When McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 drivers' title, his entry into the record books was made all the more special as he became the sport's youngest-ever world champion. Just two seasons later and Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel has outshone even Hamilton, clinching his maiden championship in Abu Dhabi at 23 years and four months-old - a full five months younger than Hamilton was back in '08.

It's a remarkable achievement, made even more remarkable because up until the Yas Marina race there were still four drivers in with a shout at the drivers' crown. And not just any drivers - Hamilton, two-time champion Fernando Alonso and Vettel's own team mate Mark Webber. To take a title at such a young age is an accomplishment, but to beat drivers of such calibre is a feat indeed...

Abu Dhabi analysis - champion Vettel's perfect timing
Posted at Formula1.com on November 15, 2010

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel led the driver standings just once during the 2010 season - at the very end. And while the German timed things to perfection with his faultless drive to victory at Yas Marina, his title rivals did quite the opposite. Both Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull's Mark Webber were rendered powerless to challenge Vettel after premature tyre stops dropped them behind the perfectly driven Renault of Vitaly Petrov...

Countdown to Wales Rally GB
Posted at WRC.com on November 5, 2010

...Another constant are the classic gravel roads found north of Roald Dahl Plass. People talk about Finland and New Zealand being great, fast rallies - well Wales Rally GB is right up there with them. And this year’s event is going to be an even bigger challenge with some of the trickiest asphalt around being slotted into Saturday’s stages on the Epynt military ranges.

But, for the mainstay, this event is about the woods; it has been for the last half-century. It was 1960 when then clerk of the course Jack Kemsley decided to give the RAC Rally some teeth...

Ogier fastest at Wales Rally GB shakedown
Posted at WRC.com on November 11, 2010

...The three hour test - a prelude to this weekend’s rally - took place a day earlier and at a different location than originally scheduled after a tree disease in Margam Forest forced organisers to abandon Thursday’s planned stage at Margam Park.

Instead the test took place on the 1.7km asphalt Superspecial constructed on the Barrage in Cardiff Bay, a stone’s throw from the Service Park. Weather conditions were dry and chilly as the night time session got underway at 1900hrs in a temperature of just three degrees Celsius...

Saturday morning the key, say WRC drivers
Posted at WRC.com on November 11, 2010

...“Where it goes to asphalt, it’s going to be very, very slippery,” said Ford’s Jari-Matti Latvala. “It’s going to be a question of trying to stay on the road. If it’s foggy it’s going to be really difficult, also because the organisers have placed some blocks near the corners to stop people from cutting the corners. I can see a few people running into those...

Friday wrap: Loeb heads close fight for Rally GB win
Posted at WRC.com on November 12, 2010

...Citroen C4 driver Loeb started Friday’s opening stage, the 32.14-kilometre charge through Hafren Forest, with a lead of 0.7s over Jari-Matti Latvala following his fastest time through Thursday night’s Cardiff Bay stage.

Despite a wild moment when he ran wide on a corner, Latvala went quickest in his factory Ford Focus to take a slender one-second lead. Although he slipped back when his car’s engine ingested water going through the second splash in Sweet Lamb and stuttered momentarily (click here to see the incident), a determined run through Myherin meant he stopped the clocks 3.2s faster than Loeb to go back in front of the Frenchman in the overall standings at the midway point...

WRC wrap: Loeb leads - just - after epic battle in Wales
Posted at WRC.com on November 13, 2010

...Solberg had no answer to Loeb - who was running first on the road - on the 11.15 kilometres of asphalt on the Four Ways Crychan stage and claimed that his rival had taken excessive ‘cuts’ through corners to drag mud and other debris onto the sealed stage surface to impede him.

Loeb, who won the stage by 6.4s to go 5.3s ahead of Solberg, brushed off the suggestion when quizzed at the remote service halt at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, where he reported overshooting a junction and stalling his engine on stage nine, before spinning on stage 11, which Solberg won to narrow Loeb’s advantage to 2.5s...

The wrc.com review: Wales Rally GB
Posted at WRC.com on November 15, 2010

...Even seven-time World Champion Sebastien Loeb, a man who has more or less seen it all, said that it was the longest and the tightest battle that he had experienced all year. The fact that he still won by 20 seconds proves the extent to which he has dominated the season: Wales Rally GB was the Frenchman’s eighth win of the year...

Friday analysis - what do Red Bull have in reserve?
Posted at Formula1.com

The first day of Abu Dhabi practice saw the four title contenders to the fore, as everybody worked on setting their cars up and getting the best out of Bridgestone's medium and super-soft tyres for the last time. Hamilton was quickest in what he felt was a much improved McLaren, but Vettel insisted there is more to come from Red Bull. We take a team-by-team look at Friday at Yas Marina...

A Defenseman Grows Up
By The Peerless at The Peerless Prognosticator

Mike Green is an “offensive” defenseman. These days, that is a term that seems to question one’s manhood as much as it identifies a defenseman’s style of play. As in, “Green doesn’t play defense.”

It is the narrative theme that probably cost Green a Norris Trophy in each of the last two seasons, his brand of play being less rugged and less “two-way” than the voting media seemed to want in their defensemen nowadays...
