Penguins Vs Capitals 02/22/2009 Review

Penguins 2 - Capitals 5

The Washington Capitals may have momentarily stumbled on Friday when they hosted the Colorado Avalanche, but they clearly frustrated the hell out of Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in yesterday's third straight victory over Pennsylvania's biggest crybabies.

The NBC Sports announcers presenting the game may have wrongfully called Crosby a "nice" guy, but they also finally and rightfully called Alex Ovechkin the "best player in the NHL by far". Sidney Crosby could be seen continuously spouting rubbish throughout the entire game toward Ovechkin and his mates on the ice and at the bench. Obviously, bad feelings were flowing both ways. Fortunately for us Caps fans, our guys usually don't also play dirty, like the whinny little windbag Crosby and some of his teammates. The referees sure seemed bent on making it look the other way round, but the outcome of the game should wash away most of those mistakes. Enough ranting! On with the important stuff.

Washington had the game sewn up about 21 minutes after the first puck drop. The Capitals got power play goals from Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin in the first period, with Maxime Talbot netting Pittsburgh's first tally between those strikes. The Pen's managed a power play goal of their own from Sergei Gonchar at 4:46 in the second period, but the game winner for the Caps was already scored by Sergei Fedorov just 56 seconds into the period.

Shaone Morrisonn and Brooks Laich gave Washington a couple of insurance goals later in the second period. The goal by Morrisonn was his 3rd of the season. Laich's goal, which he banked off starting Pens goalie Marc-Andre Fleury through a grapefruit sized gap between Fleury and the goal post, was his 14th. It also led to Pittsburgh switching to Mathieu Garon in net, but the damage had already been done.

All the Caps seemed to be ready for this match up. They played with energy the whole 60 minutes. Jose Theodore made 31 stops between the pipes. The power play worked well. The penalty kill may have been used a little more often than one would like, but things went right on that end as well.

I have to admit I did enjoy watching Ovechkin teasing Crosby. After Sid crosschecked him high in the back while in front of the Capitals' bench, bending him over the half wall near the end of the second period, Ovie kept his cool. He simply put his arm around Crosby's shoulders and passed along what I'm sure were compliments on Sid's fine, yet relatively unproductive play. After Crosby wrangled away from Ovechkin, they both headed to their benches. Ovie waved bye-bye and then added a flapping chicken gesture as time ran out on the period. Ahh yes, very entertaining game.

This video was obviously mixed by a Penguins fan.
"Alex Ovechkin Roughs Up / Taunts Sidney Crosby [Feb 22, 2009]"
I found the "Roughs Up" part of the title very funny.

Canadiens Vs Capitals 02/18/2009 Review

Canadiens 3 - Capitals 4 SO

The Washington Capitals got a shootout win over the ailing Montreal Canadiens last night in Washington, DC. Alex Ovechkin once again stole the show with another amazing goal in the first of a five game homestand.

Let's just get the bad news out of the way first, shall we. Yeah, the Caps only committed four penalties in this game, and I know that sounds like good news, but ... The Canadiens were able to score on three of the four. Ouch! This is uncharachteristic of Washington's penalty kill efforts lately, and probably just a temporary hicup. Well, that's about it for the bad news. Seriously, did you think I was going to dwell on the bad part, while there's so much good stuff to immerse in?

As a team, the Montreal out did Washington in the face off circle with a 53% win percentage versus 47%, but how about Boyd Gordon finishing with 80%?! David Steckel excelled on the draw too, winning seven out of eleven or approximately 64%. Steckel also scored a goal at 17:21 in the third period to tie the game and eventually send it into overtime, guaranteeing the Caps at least one point.

Nicklas Backstrom scored his 14th goal of the season while on the power play, about two thirds of the way through the first period, putting Washington ahead for the only time during regulation. Nobody scored in overtime, and Montreal was unable to put the puck past Jose Theodore in the shootout. Both Alexander Semin and Backstrom got one by Montreal's Carey Price, but the goal that everyone's talking about all across the hockey world is the other worldly one by Alex Ovechkin. It was his 42nd on the season, and will remembered anytime fans reminisce about the most amazing goals ever scored. Personally, I'm in agreement with those who see the way he started the play as the best part. It's probably right up there with the one we call "The Goal".

Joe Siegler at Black Sabbath Online is offering a chance to win an autographed copy of the new CD.

To win an autographed copy, you will need to submit your own idea of what the cover art should be for the new album. If you're artistic, head over to Joe's site to get all the details on what's required to enter. The contest ends once the album's actual cover art is released. We don't know when that will be yet, but you might want to get crackin' on your version straight away.

Heaven And Hell Album To Be Released April 2009

The following is a February 10, 2009 press release from Rhino Entertainment about the upcoming debut(?) studio album from Heaven And Hell, or the first studio album from Black Sabbath since 1995, depending on how you want to look at it.

HEAVEN & HELL SET TO REVEAL THE DEVIL YOU KNOW

Highly Anticipated New Album From Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice To Be Released April 28 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES --Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice returned to the stage after 15 years in 2007, launching a triumphant world tour as Heaven & Hell. Revitalized and inspired by its time on the road, the quartet recently returned to the studio, recording the band's first album since 1992's Dehumanizer. The highly anticipated album, THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, will be available from Rhino on April 28.

"Everyone had so much fun playing together that we didn't want it to end", says the group. "We started writing together and the songs started flowing like we never stopped. We wound up writing and recording an album that stands up to anything we've ever done. We're really proud of the music and excited for people to hear it."

The dark tone heard on THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is clear from several of the album's song titles, such as "Bible Black", "Rock & Roll Angel", "Breaking Into Heaven", "Atom & Evil" and "Eating The Cannibals".

The seeds of the new album were planted in 2006, when Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice returned to the studio to record a trio of new songs for Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, a recent compilation of essential tracks taken from the quartet's four albums together. Soon after, the band launched a run of sold-out shows around the world, electrifying audiences with its malevolent metal fury.

I lifted the press release from Joe Siegler's Black Sabbath Online. Joe also posted an update on the track listing for 'The Devil You Know'. The complete list should be known soon. Check on the latest tour date information via the band's official site.

Four Point Weekend For Capitals

Mike Green scores in 8th straight game on February 14, 2008.

The Washington Capitals picked up four points in the standings over the weekend, beating both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. Although outscoring their two opponents by a combined score of 9-3 in the back to back wins seems impressive in itself, that isn't the whole story.

A quick glance at the scoring summary for Saturday's 5-1 victory over the Lightning shows the Capitals taking control in the first period with one goal each from Alexander Semin, Alex Ovechkin and Shaone Morrisonn. However, the real story of this game came in the second period when 23 year old Mike Green broke the consecutive game scoring streak record for an NHL defenseman during a power play. Taking over for the starting Tampa Bay netminder Mike McKenna after the first period, Karri Ramo is the one who goes in the history books as the goalie who was in net when Green scored a goal in his eighth straight game. The previous record of seven games was accomplished by Boston Bruin Mike O'Connell back in 1984. Halfway through the second, Ryan Malone got the lone goal for the Lightning. Washington's young forward Eric Fehr scored the final goal at 13:31 in the third period. With 31 stops in his very first NHL game, the winning goalie for the Capitals was 20 year old Michal Neuvirth. Recently acquired via waivers, defenseman Staffan Kronwall also made his debut as a Wahington Capital.

The Caps' scoring dominance carried over into their 4-2 win over goalie Tomas Vokoun and the Panthers on Sunday. The only bad news in review of this past weekend shows up in the penalty summary, as Washington out infractioned the Panthers 8-3. They are among the league leaders in minor penalties. Thankfully, Washington's penalty killing was working really well yesterday. Florida's two goals came from Michael Frolik who scored his 14th of the season in the second period, and Nathan Horton when he got his 16th on a power play at the beginning of the third. Eric Fehr got his 9th of the season just 30 seconds into the second period, his 6th even strength goal this month, which leads the league. The man who started and ended the goal scoring in this game was unsurprisingly Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin's first of the game came on the power play at 15:38 in the opening period. Ovi hit net again with 2:31 left in the third. Then he completed the hat trick with just 19 seconds left in the game on a no look defensive zone clearing backhanded flip of the puck, which went in the net for his 41st goal of the season. Jose Theodore went the distance with 31 saves overall.

This weekend's stats include an awful lot of offensive pride inducing numbers for Caps fans. Ovechkin is now running away with the lead in goals overall with 41, while Green leads all defenseman with an amazing 22 goals so far. Meanwhile, Nicklas Backstrom went past the 100 mark in career assists with 102. Keep looking through the stats and you'll keep finding more to smile about.

Panthers Vs Capitals 02/07/2009 Review

Panthers 1 - Capitals 3

The Washington Capitals increased their Southeast Division lead to 14 points by beating the second place Florida Panthers in Washington, DC last night. After one of their worst performances this season on Thursday night versus the Los Angeles Kings, the Capitals rebounded with a very respectable hard fought win.

Just 33 seconds into the game, Eric Fehr scored his sixth goal of the season, giving him five points in the last five games. David Steckel got the play started, gaining control of the puck deep in the Caps' end and sending it to Fehr. Eric sent an outlet pass to Tomas Fleischmann, who drew the two Panthers defenseman toward him going into the offensive zone before sending the puck back to Fehr. Fehr's snap shot sailed past netminder Tomas Vokoun high glove side. It took eight minutes for Florida's Keith Ballard to tie the game with a long range slap shot that got by Washington goalie Jose Theodore.

Neither team scored in the second period. For the Capitals, it was the first time in 15 periods that they failed to score at least one goal in a period. The third period started much like the first, though. Washington defenseman Mike Green got his 18th goal of the season 43 seconds into the final frame, matching his previous career high total from last season. As with most of Green's goals, this one came while on a power play. The goal increased his goal scoring streak to six straight games, with five being the former record for Caps defenseman. The league record for defenseman is seven consecutive games.

Unfortunately, the Capitals got into some serious penalty trouble toward the end of the game, starting with a Sergei Fedorov holding penalty at 14:04 into the third. With a very upset Fedorov still in the penalty box, Washington found themselves on the short side of a 5 on 3 for 1:05, when Shaone Morrisonn was dealt a five minute major plus a game misconduct after boarding Florida's Cory Stillman. Of course Stillman was hurt so bad he was back on the ice for the very next shift. The Caps' held the Panthers without a shot before Fedorov was released from the penalty box. Even while they were armed with three forwards and only one defenseman, Washington's penalty killing worked very well. There was a nervous moment when defenseman Tom Poti made a rare mistake, turning over the puck with a clearing pass that was picked off. But it was a very brief moment, as Karl Alzner (Just recalled from the AHL's Hershey Bears), David Steckel and Tom Poti cleared the front of the net.

The Panthers elected to have Vokoun out of the net in exchange for an extra skater for the last 1:48 of the game, including the final 1:47 of their power play. That didn't stop the Capitals from scoring a short handed goal at 18:47. Mike Green cleared the puck from deep in Washington's end, and it ended up in Florida's empty net for the Caps' third goal of the game. It was Green's second of the third period and 19th on the season, keeping him atop all defenseman in the league.

It seems ironic that it was Washington's D man Green putting the game away for the Capitals against the Panthers, who have the highest scoring group of defenseman in the NHL, with 36 goals amongst them. The Caps got some good goaltending from Theodore along with some honest to goodness forechecking, unlike in their defeat at the hands of the Kings on Thursday. Coach Bruce Boudreau also kept rolling the lines quickly while killing penalties, possibly putting the checking lines on the ice more often than he usually does. The Capitals will now hit the road for three games, starting with a visit to MSG in New York, NY to face the Rangers on Wednesday.

Super Weekend For Ovechkin And The Capitals

Alex Ovechkin celebrates 3rd period goal vs Red Wings with Jeff Schultz.
January 31, 2009 Photo by Nick Wass / Associated Press

This past weekend went very well for Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. The Caps are flying high. Maybe not not as high as Michael Phelps, but in a better way, after winning both Saturday's and Sunday's games.

On Saturday, Washington hosted the Detroit Red Wings for a 12:30 PM game and handed last year's Stanley Cup Champions their fifth straight loss. Alex Ovechkin scored two third period goals in the span of 1:16, the second while on a power play. Ovechkin now leads the NHL with 18 third period goals and is tied for second place with 7 game winners. Viktor Kozlov also scored in the first period, and defenseman Mike Green got his 14th of the season in the second, giving the Capitals a 4-2 victory. Washington showed no signs of letting up in the final two minutes of the game, even after being called for three straight penalties and facing a 6 on 3 Detroit power play for part of that time. Jose Theodore stopped 27 of the Red Wings 29 shots on goal, making his record in goal 18-9-2. Tom Poti skated for 20:38 and blocked five shots in a much welcomed return. He had missed 15 games due to a groin problem.

After Saturday's win versus the Red Wings, the Caps kept their foot on the gas and mowed down the Ottawa Senators by a score of 7-4 on Sunday in another 12:30 PM game. Brent Johnson made 34 saves in net, giving him a 12-6-2 record, with a 2.81 GAA and .908 Sv% in 21 games this season. Johnny is now 9-0-1 at home. Mike Green started the Capitals scoring in the first period, getting his 15th goal of the season while on the power play, just three seconds off the draw. He also had three assists on the day and leads the league's defenseman in scoring. Less than a minute after Green's goal, the Capitals got another quick PPG, when Ovechkin buried one just four seconds of the draw. Ovechkin would go on to score two more goals (35 and 36) in the second period for a hat trick. Ovie now has seven career hat tricks. Also scoring in the second, Eric Fehr got his 4th goal and Alexander Semin his 19th of the season. Nicklas Backstrom capped off the win with a 155+ ft shot on an empty net from the slot in front of Washington's goal, giving him his 13th.

A review of this past weekend is a pleasure for Washington Capitals fans. The Capitals (68 points) moved back ahead of the New Jersey Devils (67 points) in the standings with the four point weekend. Guess who the Caps face next? Yeah, they head to Jersey, where they'll try to hang on to second place in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday night.

Michael Phelps - Up In Smoke

News Of The World - February 1, 2009.

Michael Phelps is in a bit of hot water today. Water that is much hotter than in any pool the US Olympic superstar has ever swam in before. News Of The World published a story yesterday about his antics while partying in November of 2008, along with a picture of the Towson, Maryland native sucking on a bong.

The high times of Phelps happened just two and a half months after his record breaking performance at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. His days as a role model may be up in smoke, but will this revelation totally ruin him? I doubt it. At 23 years old, he's got plenty of time to do PR repairs, and it's not like getting caught being a bad boy has hurt him before. He was arrested in Salisbury, MD for DUI in 2004, at the age of 19. There have been other pictures circulated of Phelps involved in compromising but legal positions since then as well.

News Of The World and others have also reported on Phelps' apology and promise not to let it ever happen again. I don't know how sincere his apology is, and I doubt it's the last time he'll screw up. He's still a very young man and only human. Phelps does take part in honorable activities and started up the Michael Phelps Foundation, which advocates swimming for children and promotes water safety.
